why should one have their hero rooted?

Custom ROMs, the option to dissect the phone and it's files and learn the OS, Remove the Sprint Apps from the phone that are completely useless and take up space. Back up your apps as you see fit ( Especially the ones you pay for) and the ability to tether.

That's why rooted my phone.

Basically you just flash the stock RUU and call it a day or start over.

....well this is from my understanding of everything as I have not looked into rooting a whole lot yet. I decided before I bought this phone I would give it some time before I hacked the crap out of it. It will inevitably happen though; it's the only logical next step.

If you dont know the benefits of what rooting can do, then IMO you shouldnt be rooting your device. Seems like a lot of people these days think its just something cool to do, then piss and moan when they cant follow directions and screw up there device. Either read and do your homework on the subject, or just use your device as intended by the manufacturer.

I believe you should be able to do whatever you want to equipment you pay for as long as it is not to steal services.

I agree with this 100%. There is no harm whatsoever in advising people to educate themselves on the possible benefits and risks involved before trying to root their phone. If you don't have a reason to root it and a plan for doing so, you're just asking for trouble and frustration.

i disagree, whyh is it suh a problem when people ask questions? we all kno that sometimes its just a bit hard to completely understand what is written about rooting and that once someone does get it, they can now explain it in a much more understandable way plus theres always nominclature details that can be missed. IMO, asking questions is actually a good way to make that final decision.

Don't feel so bad, I consider myself quite savy when it comes to following instructions on a geek level, but damn if I cannot get my hero rooted. I am begining to think its me and not my pc. lol The instructions seem fine, but i know I am doing something wrong since every time I try I fail.

I guess its not meant for me to root (for now).

I followed the instructions in elguapo76's link below exactly as written and they worked fine. Did it on a WinXP computer so I didn't have to deal with any Win7 driver issues.

That is my problem, i have win 7 on each pc. and on the laptop Vista. I may try again sometime this week.

Of course it's not a problem when people ask questions. Problems occur when people jump into rooting without having any idea beforehand what is involved or what they're hoping to accomplish. That's why it's vitally important to ask questions before attempting anything like this. Therefore, you and I are actually in complete and total agreement. RIF.
