Clearing the data from Contacts Storage removes contact data added from Online Directories, such as Facebook (People > Online Directories > facebook)

Any contacts that you added through Google, from your SIM, or manually entered into People will stay where they are. You would lose any contacts added from an online directory that were not in your phone already.

I added 57mb of data because I signed in to the Facebook online directory (1500+ FB friends!), and clearing Contacts Storage sorted the problem and signed me out of the FB directory.

You can export your contacts to sd very easily

Just open up the people app and press Menu --> Import/Export -- Export to SD card.

Same in reverse to import.

I think the Export to SD feature only makes a copy.......it doesn't create more storage space on your phone unless you delete the contacts, or clear the data in Contacts Storage. As far as I know, there's no way to just have contacts stored on SD and use them - it's just a backup.

Yeah I know. The OP wanted to know how to backup\restore contacts so he could delete and start again.

Just reread what I wrote... reads a little more aggressive than was in my head

No probs :)

Still, the OP's problem is serious and I had it myself. I can't add facebook details to my phone/Google contacts because my storage fills up and the phone freezes. MOVING contacts to SD and using them from there would be a great feature and a solution to my problem.......I can only hope!

I have 16 Gmail contacts in my phone and only 4 of them are on facebook. Using the facebook Directory, those 4 contacts get lots of extra info like email addresses, other phone numbers and pictures from their Facebook profile - this is really good!

The problem is that the Directory also adds names, email, phone numbers and profile pictures for ALL facebook contacts and stores them on your phone, even if you don't have them set to appear in People. I only want the facebook details for the 4 friends already in my contacts, not the other 1500 FB friends.

It's a shame that it's all-or-nothing - I really like the extra stuff added to my 4 contacts by Facebook.

Thanks for all the quick responses, i have:

0 sim
4 google mail
162 phone
549 facebook

My ideal solution would to have all my phone contacts which i have on facebook(100ish) to have there facebook profile picture up and birthdays other than that i dont need any of the others.

If i delete contact storage will i loose all the number i have in the phone?(i store them on the phone not the sim card)

Then if i log out of the facebook directory on the people app, and have facebook set to 'sync with existing contacts' will this get rid of all the other contacts?

Deleting data in Contact Storage will remove the 549 facebook contacts, and any links between facebook and your phone/Google contacts. It won't remove phone/Google contacts. I tried to use the "Sync with existing contacts" option but I think this only works when you are signed in to the Facebook Directory. So, as I said above, it's all-or-nothing - it's not possible to choose which Facebook contact info you store on your phone, you either have them all or you have nobody.

As far as i can see, your facebook contacts are clearly the culprits. I have over 90 contacts (NO FACEBOOK INCLUDED) and my contct storage is just 3mb . I have decided to keep facebook away from my Desire because of the problems associated with it and android in form of high data usage due to facebook making clandestine internet activities. For now i reserve my facebook activites to my PC.

Don't confuse the Facebook App and the Facebook Online Directory - they are 2 separate things and require a separate log in for each. The App works well for mobile facebooking, it's the Directory and it's sync with your existing phone Contacts (in People) that causes the problems with storage.

Sorry to wake this thread up but I am having serious storage issues as I have 724 phone contacts and almost 50% of them is in my FB too, thus I linked these contacts and by linking I believe I accumulated around 40MB of contacts storage- prolly bec of thumbnail photos...

The best solution would be, to be able to move the contacts storage to SD and still be able to use it..

Anyway I saw this thread :Contact Storage: Move to SD? - Android @ MoDaCo

Is there any truth to this?
