How To Email Workaround for great funtionality

I have setup all my pop3 accounts through Gmail. The advantages are:

1) All your mail in one spot with small email tags identifying what account they are from.

2) Signatures for your outgoing mail with the Gmail app.

3) You can file all your emails by labels (folders).

4) You can search all your mail.

5) You can filter your mail so it goes directly in the labels (folders).

6) If you have an attachment in an email, you can save a bookmark for the Gmail website on your home screen and you can go there and download the attachment to your Droid. Works great!

7) At all times you have access to all email on the Gmail website mirrored on your droid.

8) You can also accept appointments created with Outlook through the web side app accessible from your phone.

All the functionality of a Blackberry with better website functionality. I am really starting to get the functionality Google meant in the Droid!

Update: I have found that forwarding mail to the Gmail account results in faster syncs. You can do this from your pop3 server.

Nice find for getting pop3 accounts to work on the better mail app.

But for me, its enough that google knows my telephone number, location 24/7, contacts' names/numbers/addresses, my browsing and online shopping habits, files on my phone, and lord knows what else, without them having my email sitting on their servers.

Just think about those "Industry Standards" and "Common Sense" blanket exceptions to privacy.

I can't help but wonder how directly related "blind trust in corporations" is related to age. It seems to me that in another generation the USA will consider Chinese and Russian standards for individual rights to be okay.

I have my verizon account setup there. Go to gmail online, settings, accounts and import, check mail using pop3:, add pop3 email account.

In setting you add your signature, which account to send with, it was easier to use Gmail server to send although it still appears as though it was sent from your Verizon account.

I can't help but wonder how directly related "blind trust in corporations" is related to age. It seems to me that in another generation the USA will consider Chinese and Russian standards for individual rights to be okay.

I wouldn't worry unless your email includes military or corporate secrets, in which case I doubt you would use Google. I think Google is just thrilled at the chance to beat Microsoft Outlook and Exchange Server.

Its not everyday you get to topple the great MS.

That's all well and good, but it would mean my info is sitting on a server, which is more visible (vulnerable) to the rest of the "World", than say, my Optimum Online cable account.

Gmail app is definately more robust than any other POP3 handler out there...just wish that it would create another "Label tree" for the exteral account, rather than merging everything in the same inbox. I created a new label, along with a filter with the external Pop3, so that it makes a copy of messages in its self-named "label". It still leaves a copy of messages in the main Inbox though, but at least it "tags" the message, so you know which account its for, viewable in the "Inbox" view.

In your filter you click to skip the inbox or after you have read it you can move to the label from phone or web.

Yeah, I used both "Import POP3" and "Check email from another POP3". Import method doesn't let you pick whether to "leave messages on server", so I cancelled before I saw any changes after 10 min. On a 3rd refresh it actually did pull in most of my messages, and auto created a folder.

This after using the "Check other POP3" method, where I created all rules/filters and label specifically for external account.

I got it working ok, not sure if I'll continue, but I tried spending more time finding more info about the data stored from the native "Backup". Curious on schedule, and what actually gets backed up...whether you can adjust items backed up, or specific backup in time, etc.

You right, I did not see an option for leaving the messages on the other server but my experience is that it does.

Also can take a long time initially to get all your mail.

Yeah the import method leaves messages on server by default...checked via Outlook, forgot to post.

When receiving a message:

You really do not need Outlook Gmail has contacts and calendar all synced to your phone and phone to web as well.

I understand it feels funny not to use Outlook, but I think the Gmail Web is more universally assessable.

Try making your Verizon account the default account. I just sent to Gmail and it did say on behalf of!

Gmail Web, Settings, Labs and enable offline. Then save changes and you will go through a series steps which installs Googles Gears.

This program will install an HTML based computer resident version of Gmail. It will also sync all your data locally for use offline.

so im running gmail now with the verizon account in there, its missed a couple emails though and i dont see them in the spam folder even though they were pretty much kinda spam???????????
