I want to gather info from other ally owners. What is a good home alternative to the stock systems. I tried using launcherpro, but it ate a ton of memory and really slowed the phone down. currently using stock android system, but lately it's been force closing on me(WTF?). Any suggestions?

Can't think of any reason that the launcher would eat 20 megs. Mine only takes up about 1.80 megs if I remember right. You could try going into the app manager and clear out the cache for the Market. The market can quickly eat up memory if you don't flush the cache from searches every once in awhile, especially if you do a lot of market browsing. Do the same from within the browser as well. I make a habit of clearing my cache files every night before I shut the phone down.

I gained more memory by using LauncherPro, you might want to take a look at your apps and see whats going on because you definitely have an issue, can you tell us what apps you have installed?

since i'm new to this OS, i'll give you a complete list hoping you might spot something. currently i have installed: adw.launcher, alchemy, backbreaker, vzw backup assistant(can't uninstall), droid mini golf, es file explorer, espn news, facebook, gaming buzz, historyeraser, imobsters, juicedefender, magic 8 ball, my verizon mobile, nfl mobile, openspark, portal soundboard, robo defense, syncmypix, systempanel lite, the weather channel, world war.

those are just the active (not backed-up) apps on my phone. i use systempanel as a taskkiller/ mem recovery, and only have a handful of apps on the exclude list.

okay for now to start with, get rid of juice defender and all task killers, and things like that, u dont need them because of the way linux works, task killers is for windows-like operating system, trust me i used task killers a lot but than i was told this and stopped, its a lot better. ill look through the other programs and post an edit later

sorry moderator for double post, clicked quote instead of edit i think =/

EDIT: Get rid of:
History Eraser - you can delete browsing history within android system itself
The Weather Channel - you dont need this, android has a weather widget
[I'll add more as i go through em]

okay, history eraser i can probably live without. i only use it a couple time a week. i just like the convenience of it.

juice defender on the other hand is another story. it really is helping my battery last longer. i experimented with keeping it off last week, and the difference without it was dramatic. juice defender on will make my battery last all day with moderate to heavy use. without it, i lose 25% of the charge within a couple hours, even if i haven't used the phone.

I have the weather channel because i just plain don't like accuweather or its widget. and i don't have twc running 24/7 either. i check it when i want the current info, then shut it down when i'm done.

i've also noticed in the last week or so that this phone likes to be rebooted daily. one thing i miss from my blackberry is the auto on/off feature.

Thats because you are running lwo on RAM, delete the My Verizon, delete everything that u can use the browser to get because the way this phone is set up, it uses phones internal memory for RAM and stuff too, so more apps = less speed. If you REALLY REALLY need your apps I would say root it and get app2sd so you can install apps on the SD Card
