Help AT&T bloatware using up my data allowance

I checked my data usage at the AT&T web site and found that the phone was sending lots of data on its own. One night while sitting on the counter it sent over 19 megabytes at 2:41 am. For 4 nights in a row a data transmission ocurred at this exact time. Following are excerpts from my bill:

THU 07/22/2010 2:41AM Data Transfer Data 19,549 KB SMT2 AT MBRA Out 0.00
FRI 07/23/2010 2:41AM Data Transfer Data 1,813 KB SMT2 AT MBRA Out 0.00
SAT 07/24/2010 2:41AM Data Transfer Data 437 KB SMT2 AT MBRA Out 0.00
SUN 07/25/2010 2:41AM Data Transfer Data 539 KB SMT2 AT MBRA Out 0.00

I have removed the following apps and noticed a large decrease in the volume of data but I still find apps running that I didn't start, for example, Gmail and Allshare :

AT&T Navigator
AT&T Radio
AT&T Maps
AT&T Music
AT&T Mobile Hotspots
Mobile Banking
Mobile Video
Where
YPmobile
AT&T FamilyMap
Mini Diary
MobiTV
Write and Go

Can I safely remove Gmail and Allshare?

thanks,

According to AT&T, when this nightly data "dump" was discovered on the iPhone, no data is ACTUALLY being transferred in those periods.

The phone is merely reporting its aggregated data usage for the day back to AT&T.

In otherwords, if you used 1.6gb of data during a day, you'll see a 1.6gb "data transfer" in the middle of the night as your phone reports that usage back to AT&T.

I've realized a similar problem, where my HTC Aria on AT&T is uploading large files 60MB or more for no apparent reason. I see them on the bill as SMT2 at MBRA as well. These are actual uploads, as it has bumped my data usage over its limit two months in a row. I've called AT&T several times, and these clowns don't seem to understand the difference between upload and download. "Sir, perhaps you downloaded a large YouTube video." Duh!

This phone is used almost exclusively for texting.

The kicker is, this has also happened when the phone is outside a cell service area.

Any ideas?

If you are in a wifi area duing this time, you can turn your wife sleep mode to never. Under Applications - Settings - Wifi settings - Menu - advanced- Wifi Sleep Policy - Never. This will not change the AT&T blotware from uploading stuff, but it will prevent it from using your data over 3G.

Change WIFI to "never" setting is the ticket. It worked for me.
I am in a WIFI environment most of the day, rarely use 3G.

I checked my AT&T account online the other day and there were two large data transfers on the same day, one ~37 MB and a second at ~25 MB. These were during time periods when I was connected to WiFi (one at work and the other at home). At least on my phone, when connected to WiFi, and not in sleep mode, the cell connection is turned off. I have noticed, however, that when awakening from sleep, the WiFi has to reconnect. Is there a way to keep the WiFi on at all times?

I just checked my data usage to find out that in the first 5 days of my current billing cycle, I've used 128MB of my 200MB plan.
So I checked my data usage on-line to find out that my phone has been sending, yes I said sending data at 2:03 or 7:03 am every morning during this billing cycle. Of course my bill for last month is not available yet so I can't check how long it's been doing this, but will post it when I can.

DATE TIME TO/FROMTYPEDIRECTION MSG/KB/MIN

09/08 02:03 AM wap.cingular Internet/MEdia Net Sent 11997KB
09/07 07:03 AM wap.cingular Internet/MEdia Net Sent 64347KB

My wifi has been set to never sleep since the day I got the phone.
I am always in range of my wifi when it is sending this data.

Question, does anyone know how to remove the bloatware from the HTC Aria?

Small comparison between phones
I got my phone about a week before the wife.
I rooted mine & put on Droidwall (Firewall app) on mine, the wife's phone is at the default settings - the WiFi set to never sleep.

My Data usage. 0.49 Meg
Her Data Usage 18.22 Meg

I'm considering a Galaxy S with AT&T and will ask them about this tomorrow. If their boatware is indeed causing a person's data use to increase like this, it's a deal killer for me and I'll get another iphone (my current 3GS just died after getting wet). I have AT&T's $15/mo data plan and don't want to have to go back to their unlimited plan. Thanks.

Just an FYI.
After I changed her settings to set the WiFi to never sleep, her usage has dropped down to near nothing at night (where we have WiFi in the house)

Thanks. I find it a bit irksome though that one has to find a work around for something like this, keeping the phone on all the time, never putting wifi to sleep, etc...

Yes, but I do like waking up to the Current news, Weather, Daily Reading, and having my E-Mail updated right off the bat. That bandwith has to come from somewhere & I'd rather have it come from my WiFi then my 3G.

As has been stated in this thread, that is not the time the data is being sent or received, but rather the entry in the AT&T billing logs of how much data was used during that day or session.

I spoke with a sales person at my local att office this morning. She recommended getting a firewall app to prevent unwanted uploads, if that's what's happening.
