Ok done a search but not coming up with a definiate answer.
Are there any nav systems which dont require an internet connection that I can use on my hero.

The negatives in that review are all pretty minor niggly points IMO. Got the UK edition and i'm perfectly happy with it. It's a satnav. It works just fine as a satnav. What else do you want from it?

The GoogleNav will require you have a data/network connection, but it really does look like a delicious app.

I have copilot 8 and up til now no issues or loss of signal

The problem with google nav is that the times you most need your satnav to work is when youre lost in the arse end of nowhere. i.e. the sort of place where there is no data connection.

The very reason i bought copilot was because i decided to check google maps on my phone to help find out where i was. The GPS in the phone pinpointed my location precisely and displayed my exact location - in the middle of a blank screen. Highly accurate and completely useless at the same time. Had to resort to a paper road atlas at that point.

Copilot isnt perfect, the UI is a bit clunky, but it works. Unfortunately it hasnt solved world peace or made my life complete but what can you expect for $35? Shrug.

Free app Mapdroyd (along with its storage backend app Contentdroyd) is nice for that, although usability of the map might vary with country. It doesn't do route planning or traffic navigation, hence I did not want to mention it in this thread, but it is good for checking your location as you mention above.

I had co-pilot for my i****e and it was excellent, I haven't bought it for my Hero yet I'm waiting to see what the free Google one looks like.
