Will +30fps make our screen movements fluid like the iphone 4's?

I played with my friend's piece of shit iphone 4 (haha jk) the other day and couldn't help but notice how fluid the screen transitions were. Just wondering if it's the 30fps cap that makes my EVO the way it is and if the ROMs that break the 30fps cap makes the transitions smoother.

Do you know why it's so smooth? There isn't a bunch of apps running in the background like the EVO. There's no multitasking on the iphone. At least true multitask. It's like running a alot of things on your computer vs running a few things. Which one you think is gonna be faster?

If you're talking about the videos and stuff[games], well this is all on HTC, as I've heard they locked it at 24fps and you can't do jack to it, unless you root it. I will assume they did it to preserve battery life or whatever.

Android > Apple :D

No, Android phones aren't as smooth as the iPhone because Android doesn't have UI GPU acceleration. Their reasoning, if I remember correctly, is that it's difficult to write the drivers for all of the different GPUs in the market right now. However, I'm pretty sure that Gingerbread will introduce GPU acceleration to the UI.

Wrong, wrong, wrong.

Please don't spread faulty information like this. As Bob stated, it's because Android is using a "generic" display driver for portabilities sake. The iphone takes full advantage of it's GPU because they are hardware locked.

Yes, Gingerbread is purporting to have hooks for this, but remember, having it in Gingerbread is one thing, having your Hardware/UI provider actually writing the hooks to take advantage of it for your specific hardware is another thing all together.

The Evo's current hardware is capable of producing iPhone-like smoothness. The reason the Evo's scrolling looks jerky out of the box is because it is capped at 30 FPS, and Sense's app drawer is really slow.

The speed at which you can scroll the menus on android is MUCH faster than what you can do with an iPhone, and that makes FPS that much more important. The faster you scroll, the more frames you need to give the appearance of smooth movement.

When you get a custom kernel that uncaps the Evo to 50+ FPS, the scrolling animations (like moving between home screens, scrolling web sites and emails, etc) become really smooth. If you have a Sense-based ROM, scrolling the app drawer will still be clunky. But overall, the experience is comparable to iPhone.

The other HUGE difference between stock Evo and iPhone is the sensitivity of the screen to your touch/slide. The iphone menus stick right to your fingers. With the Evo, there's a lag, so the menu or icon you are dragging is always trailing your finger by a significant amount. The end result is a phone that just doesn't feel responsive to your touch.

A custom kernel that uncaps the FPS also fixes this issue. Menus really stick to your finger's motion. And it goes a long way toward overall touchscreen experience.

Right on. Gotta remember that Apple engineers all their software exclusively with their hardware, so the two work together so seamlessly, as apposed to Android (and PC for that matter) makers who design their stuff to be compatible with all kinds of devices.

I think that's a big part of why Apple stuff is so high performance.

Having said that, I've seen plenty of Android phones that run silky smooth like the iPhone, which leads me to believe this 30fps cap is a pretty big deal after all. That, or it's HTC/Sprint doing a cut rate job of having their hardware work nice with Google's software.

to be honest, i haven't had much of an issue with the laggy look...the phone does more than i need it to, and it does it very quickly...thats all that matters to me...

sadly, (i am not a iFanboy or droidboy either), android phones will never, at least for the meantime, be as smooth or silky sexy as the iphone...the iphone is a "finished" product that doesn't need fixes, only add-ons. Android is still very young and there is no ONE phone for this OS...android will have to maintain the cookie-cutter OS to appeal to many different manufactures...IF, google decides to go the route of an iPhone type device, they would need to fix the holes in the OS for that specific phone and basically create two android OS's, one for everyone and one for that specific device...

Sadly, this isn't going to happen because everyone wants to make money, and I honestly feel this is why android is having the issues it is trying to get that silky smooth look of WebOS or the Iphone...

I love my Evo, but I do miss WebOS.....

I don't doubt that removing the 30 fps cap will help but I still don't think it'll come close to the iPhone. I've had a hero, which didn't have the cap, and played with the incredible and neither have come close to that feel. Its like the person above posted, things just seem to stick to your fingers as if you're moving the objects in real life. Unfortunately I think this is whats limiting some of the games like angry birds to be ported to androids.

Any android phone will never be as fast as an iphone, unless android phones go to flash based memory. Instead of pulling everything off of the card like our phones do, the iphones items are already right there, so they need not to load.

Back to the drawing board compadre.

SD cards _are_ flash memory, not everything is pulled off of it anyway, and when the cache is offloaded to it, astounding results have been reported for both the EVO and a Samsung Galaxy variant.

The internal rom on _every_ smartphone on the market is flash - except for ram.

Finally, Android pre-loads everything it can, especially services (a concept kinda foreign to the Apple) - so everything you want Android to do - it already does.

Fixing the CAP certainly goes a long way, however, next to an iPhone4 it still going to look like it suffers from some lagginess/choppiness

I did pretty much every tweak I could find to speed it up, side by side with my co-workers iphone4 it certainly looks much better, but iPhone4 still does it better.

And say what you will about the Retina screen, that thing looks great, if only it were bigger!
