Help playing .avi and other formats on native player?

Ok, so I downloaded a few episodes of my favorite series (futurama whoop whoop whoop) off of Megaupload.com to watch on the go. Now, the native player won't play .avi files, which is an annoying inconvenience for such an advanced device, but easily averted with a trip to the market. I personally use rockplayer to play these.

But now in an effort to get what little use the hdmi out offers I want to get them to play on the native player to be able to project them on my television.

Is there a way to play .avi or other formats on the evos native player? or a way to convert them?

Yes, that's what I use to play them but I want to play them with the devices default player.

use handbrake to convert them to mp4 i think

Handbrake is a PC/Mac program, not an Android program. So you would convert the file on your desktop and them dump it back to the phone.

Stand alone WM on XP plays MP4's? With WM11 I had to tweek it with third-party codecs. Don't get me started on WM's DRM.

I used WM for years, and neither Windows Media nor the HTC video player could handle avi files. The only way to play avi files was with Coreplayer, a third party app. It's the same with Android, except I use Rockplayer instead of Coreplayer. And Rockplayer has a couple of added features -- it will bookmark your place in any file so you can resume where you left off (Coreplayer did this, but only with the now playing file, ie if you played a different file, it wouldn't remember your position in the old file) and it can play files with AC3 audio. This feature is great, since those files had unplayable audio in Coreplayer.

Is there an issue with Rockplayer you're having? Are you trying to use the default player to access the HDMI out?

Good, helpful info, thanks! However, when using WM Player, you never just added a codec pack? For years, I've use WM Player to play everything from .avi's to .flv's to DVDs. Ah, maybe WM means Windows Mobile?

Anyway, thanks for recommendation for Rockplayer. Will give that try. Can't figure out why no codec packs or added codecs available for Android. I guess its the way its made for use with hardware codec support. Boo.

Im not really putting up an arugument for "windows mobile" because i can say i enjoy the UI of android much more. although i was a Wm user for years and had no problem loading a codec pack and playing nearly all formats with windows media mobile

The point in this thread was to figur out a way to play these .avi files on the htc native player to be able to use the hdmi out cable [ which only transfers off the native video player and camera slid show =( ]
