Help How to replace cracked screen on Droid ?

Anyone have any suggestions on how to acquire a replacement screen for the Droid? I have found one company : portatronics.com who will repair the phone if you send it in. Looked for a DIY video on Utube but to no avail...hmmm...it's just a hairline crack in the upper corner from a drop but i can see it getting worse in the future. Ofcourse I didn't buy insurance!

But they still don't carry them but most likely will pretty soon.

I've added and subtracted it w/o it being w/in 30 days. Technically VZW isn't providing the insurance Asurion is... So they are the ones providing the rules...

I just called VZW to verify for you guys and yes it does appear that as long as you are w/in 30 days you can add it. Thats a new rule to me. Even lamer they are charging more money to insure the Droid than they do all other phones. Stupid!

Not only are they charging more, but the replacement fee is also up.

back in the day I paid a mere $35 for a replacement phone. When I first started considering the DROID I heard it was $50 - but when I contacted VZW they said it was more like ~$80....

Yes, it was released on 11/06/2009.



I pay $6 a month for the Verizon/Asurion insurance and it has an $89 deductable. All "advanced devices" go by these rates , not just the Droid

Waiting to hear back from Portatronics to see if oem faceplate specs are right---so sending it to them is option @ 59.00 + shipping + 25.00 kit. Be nice (but risky yes) to find a diy video with correct (RadiosHaK) tools needed. Save on labor--oops! Thanks sho95 for link...

Honestly, I've been a verizon customer for 10 years and would never pay for insurance to replace a phone that is still under warranty. Ive done this before, and I would suggest it: Call Verizon and complain about the phone. Make something up about it not working. I always say it gets really hot sometimes when using GPS and the screen stops responding. This will only work if its a small hairline crack, if its any bigger than they will probably send the phone back to you because of damage. I've done this with previous phones when they start to get a lot of wear and tear.

Hey everyone,
I had a blackberry storm 1 with asurion coverage. The phone bricked itself. I went into the store (had all the paperwork and reciepts etc, but nothing was needed) The guy pulled up my account, took my phone (nothing could be pulled off of it) and swapped it out for a brand new one. I didnt have to pay a single cent on it!

Just go into your nearest store, and tell them that whenever you are trying to make a call, your phone screen will shut off and become non responsive MOST OF THE TIME. They will hopefully replace your phone for no charge. I would suggest you purchase the asurion coverage though. well worth the money for what it covers.

Um, I think it costs more to insure a BMW than a Honda Civic. Their exposure is twice as much. The deductible for a non-smart phone is $50. It's $89 for smart phones. It isn't stupid. If you think it's too much, don't buy it.

Let's see, you think it's OK for you to commit fraud, but it isn't OK for Asurion to determine the price of the service they offer? Get a life.

6 bucks a month plus 89 bucks if you need a replacement isnt that bad if you do the math guys... the droid cost 550 retail... the your winning unless you wait a full 24 months then get a replacement... which even then your still under(not by much) the retail cost of the device...


P.S.
The insurance is more expensive on ALL data devices not just the droid...

I'm considering picking up a Droid in January. I am a little concerned because the screen is so large. Has anyone else had problems with a cracked screen? How much abuse will it take? I don't intend to go throwing it around, but drops do happen.

Very sensitive screen--I would say easily prone to cracks---definitely invest in a case or go for the insurance. Still waiting for an all in one replacement kit !!

As an FYI, I dropped my phone yesterday and completely shattered the screen. I don't have insurance on the phone and was outside the 30 day period so they wouldn't let me add it. The phone still works fine so I brought it to Verizon hoping they could fix it. They said they couldn't but are sending me a replacement phone for $50.

I'm not sure how I got a replacement with no insurance for less than the deductible if I did have insurance. Maybe they screwed up but this isn't the first time I've heard of them doing this. Maybe it's because the rest of the phone was fine and only the screen was damaged?

The replacement phone is probably a return or refurb but that's fine. I'm just happy I don't have to pay full retail for a new one.

This is at least the second time I've seen you go all Cap'n Morality in a thread. Listen, people don't have to answer to you and they're not gonna. You're not going to change anyone's mind about this kind of behavior. You ranted on & on in a senseless, monotonous and futile battle with someone in another thread, and all for what? You simply can't change someone with an ingrained sense of entitlement and ability to justify nearly any fraudulent activity against a large corporation. Maybe you or I couldn't ever bring ourselves to outright lie to get a replacement phone, but for each of us there are 7 or 8 or 28 who can. And they will! (Always.)
Where do you (personally) draw the line? Rooting phones and screwing with the software in itself is fraud. Sending a bricked phone in for a replacement most certainly is. That and "uh-oh, I dropped/bricked my phone. Time to screw Verizon..." pretty much makes up about 60% of the content of this forum.
By no means am I saying that because everybody does it, it's somehow acceptable. But I think you rant about the wrong issue. Ultimately, fraud always gets paid for. The business world is usually a step ahead and implements policies that allow for this extra burden. If you're gonna be pissy about it, you should be bitching that fraud gets paid for by honest consumers like you & me, just like we pay too much taxes to support lazy scumbags who milk the system. But ya gotta stop with the Morality Police BS because it makes you come off like you're too damned holy, and these guys really don't care. -Neither do the schleps that work the counter at Verizon for 12 bucks an hour, either. The problem is systemic.

i dropped my phone and had the insurance.they want $89 to replace what good is the insurance. i have been paying insurance for two and a half years. now that i need to use it they want more money. i am so mad that i will pay to get out of contract before i give verizon another dime!

I personally never get insurance for my phones for two reasons:

1) They wouldn't offer the insurance if it was a good deal or they would lose money.

2) The majority of people are never going to break/lose their phone and those that do are probably going to end up paying more in insurance premiums and deductible than the phone is worth.

That said, an $89 deductible isn't a terrible deal since the phone costs about $500 to replace brand new or $200+ for a used one on Ebay.

As to getting a cracked screen fixed, the original question, there are a few options available:

1) If you have the insurance, do that. It's the best option. If you don't have insurance...

2) Buy a used phone on Ebay for about $220. This is the most expensive option but definitely the easiest.

3) Buy the screen on Ebay and replace it yourself. The parts currently run anywhere from $40-$80 depending on where they come from (China or US). As someone who fixes these phones, I can tell you that you should only try this if you're pretty good around electronics. It's one of the tougher repairs I've ever seen to do: Lots of screws, plenty of adhesive, some tricky connectors, and one very fragile ribbon cable. Here's a video of the repair: YouTube video.
