Root How do I flash OC patch?

I have the OC patch that I need to flash, but I just don't know where to start with which folder to put it into or where and when to cut and paste. Everything I see comes down to "just flash the OC patch", but I guess that I just don't know which steps exactly are for flashing and not rooting. Can anyone help me get through this?

Right, but there are certain folders that I have to cut and paste it to and a certain process to follow. I can't just throw the patch in the main sd card folder and flash it...

I assume you got the patch from this thread (Overclock Patch and update.zip - xda-developers) and read through all of Zanfur's notes? You'll need to register over at XDA in order to be able download files from there.

The patch you want, I believe, is called "kernel-overclock-update-v3.zip (2.39 MB)" (xda-developers) [MD5 sum: 99c41926fd4af73da9a41f43ce88c264]

You would flash this patch just like you would a custom ROM. Just make sure that you:

1. Download the patch and place it in the top-level directory of your /sdcard
2. Boot into Amon_RA's custom recovery
3. Make a Nandroid backup
4. Did you make a Nandroid backup?
5. Return to the main menu and select "Flash from sdcard"
6. Select the "kernel-overclock-update-v3.zip" file that you previously downloaded
7. After finishing the flash, return to the main menu and reboot

Also, there's some scary warnings that Zanfur has in the thread regarding setCPU and making sure that the first thing you do is select the lowest speed and slowly go up from there. I haven't read anywhere of anyone that's done this having to do some of the things that Zanfur says in the thread, but your mileage may vary.

Remember, your Nandroid backup is your friend--always make a backup before doing something "scary" .

THANK YOU! I didn't think that things were that easy. I know that you tried to help me before, buy I just didn't understand the basics of flashing. It's so easy though! In short, it worked and I am thrilled with 710MHz. My #1 thing was the phone dialer. It was okay until the 2.1 OTA. Now it's back to normal plus some.

Correction: I already D/L'd the O/C patch and made a Nandroid backup, how do I move the D/L'd patch to the top layer of my SD card so when I go to flash it won't read rootme.zip. Thank you

If you're doing it from your phone, your browser will download it to the /sdcard/download directory. You'll have to use something like Astro File Manager (or a similar file manager) to move it one directory level up (to /sdcard). For Astro, it goes something like this:

1) Point your phone's browser to the location of the o/c patch from my earlier post
2) Download the o/c patch (kernel-overclock-update-v3.zip)
3) Download / install / launch Astro File Manager (free in the Market)
4) Navigate to the /sdcard directory (touch the folder named "/sdcard")
5) Navigate to the download directory
6) Long-press the o/c patch filename (kernel-overclock-update-v3.zip)
7) Select "Edit"
8) Select "Move"
9) You'll see "Moving file kernel-overclock-update-v3.zip" at the top of the screen
10) Click the "Up" folder icon with the green up-arrow at the top of the screen
11) Click the "Paste" icon to finish moving the file to the top-level directory of your sdcard (which is "/sdcard")
12) You should now see the kernel-overclock-update-v3.zip file underneath the /sdcard directory listing

If you're doing it from your PC and assuming you've got your phone connected via a USB cable and mounted as a disk drive, its a little simpler since you would drag it from where you downloaded it on your PC to the drive letter corresponding to your phone and into the /sdcard directory.

Makes perfect sense. I just did it and it showed up on my SD card, flashed, rebooted now I'm going to D/L setCPU and O/C. I can't believe how easy this all is. Before I jumped in I was scared to death about literally everything haha. Now that I've done it, it's sooooo simple! Thanks for helping me out, again. Can you reccomend any must have apps now that I'm rooted? I already D/L'd Barnicle WiFi Thether and It works pretty well

My favorite is drocap2 (screen capture) that is free in the Market.

I've also heard excellent things about Titanium Backup Pro (not free) and Root Explorer (not free). Not had to use these yet, but I've heard lots of folks espousing their virtues.

I'm trying to figure out what I should keep my phone at on different profiles. If you don't know, could you post your setting just so I can get an example to go off of? Thanks

I've noticed in that thread everyone talks about their "sleep/stand by" mode...my setcpu doesn't have one of those options. Just Charging/full, charging AC/full, Charging USB/full, screen off, battery and temp. Should I just use the screen off in place of the sleep/stand by?

Yeah, I think we were all discussing the old version of setCPU (or do I have this backwards?)...I've only recently downloaded the newest version and saw the same thing. I believe that is correct, though.

There's a really good video that Frisco posted...let me find and link you to the post that should help explain more about the settings. Back in a sec...

That video was a good starting point. It still doesn't mention if the sleep/stand by is the same as screen off but I'm going to assume it is. I have my main settings set to 710/528 and it's very speedy. Root is awesome
