Shoot me if this was asked before Change default app

Ok got the Captivate and love it. I want to change the default messaging browsing and email clients on the phone but can't seem to get it to work.

Do I have to root the phone to do that. I have Handcent SMS and K-9 Mail and Dolphin Browser. I want those to be the defaults and not the stock apps.

Sorry if this was asked before but my search didn't return much.

Generally default applications can be reset by going to Settings -- > Applications --> Manage Applications -- > select your application

and click clear defaults button.

Sparker I reckon this was a great question and it never seems to get answered.

In so many threads it gets asked, and people say to just install Handcent and then when you go to launch from the default icon it will prompt you. It does not, or certainly not for me and evidently plenty of other posters.

You cannot change this behaviour under Settings -> Applications -> Manage Applications in either the Handcent or Messages groups of settings. The defaults sections are grayed out and not in use apparently.

Is there an answer to this question? Generally the question just gets sidetracked. But someone must have found a way to get back to the 'choose default messaging app' state.

Sam.

** Edit ** Actually I just realised I am in a specific phone sub-forum, so it might be obvious what a launcher is to owners of that phone. I'm after an answer to what I assume is a more general android question, so I searched the site and thought this the best thread to reply to, without noticing the subforum. If that's the case, apologies. I'll go and repost somewhere.

Thanks, but I am not sure what you mean by "launcher". I can't find a reference to it anywhere. Do you mean the desktop, as Windows would call it?

I looked up other launcher apps and they seem to be rival desktops.

Anyway, if so, holding the messaging icon simply allows you to move or delete it, the same as any other icon.

Alternative launchers like LauncherPro, ADW, OpenHome, Slidescreen, (all available in Market) are not phone specific but Android specific, meaning that they can be used on any number of Android phones. And, yes, they are the smartphone equivalent of your computers desktop, in a way. What phone do you have?

I have an HTC Desire and quite happy about it.

So if the launcher is my desktop, and I tap and hold the messaging icon, it just wants to move it, as I'd expect. So I'm back to square one, unless I can download a launcher just to fix this admittedly minor problem! And I'm very happy with the standard launcher.

Yeah, I'd be happy with HTC Sense, as well. Unfortunately, I know next to nothing about the ins/outs of that UI. There is a sub-forum for your device, though. :D
