TIPS/TRICKS/COMMON PROBLEMS:

First of lets start of with speed.
--LG Ally uses internal memory as RAM, so the more apps you have installed the slower it is, just how its made, deal with it, LG decided to save money on RAM.

Running tasks/Task killers
--Because of the way Linux systems work it is not recommended to use any task killer, memory freeing tools, things like that. I tested this myself the phone does run better and gets better battery life without task killers.

Custom ROM's
--If you install a custom ROM you will not get OTA updates (with some exceptions if its just an add-on to your current ROM), new ROM's do not use private keys that LG gives your phone, they use public keys, so you can forget about updates if you dont save your original ROM. You can try flashing the old v6 with the LG update tool and that should give you your original ROM and you should get updates, but you need to do a hard reset after flashing v6 for it to completely clear everything.

Custom Wallpapers for LG Ally
--If you want to make/get a custom wallpaper for the ally it has to be 960x800 pixels! If its bigger/smaller it'll look well... pretty much crappy

50% bug and FroYo
--I've seen this question asked a lot, the answer is there has been no reports of 50% bug on froyo, so yes its been fixed.
Check here for more: http://androidforums.com/lg-ally/90707-oh-no-ally-has-dreaded-50-bug.html

LG's plans on the LG Ally
--I talked to LG Pro he said that LG is working on one more update for the Ally, it is unknown if the update is to fix a few bugs that it has right now or if its FroYo. No I am not saying that its the last update, I'm saying that there is an update coming.

Ringtones
--You can use your music as ringtones if you go into music player, play a song and click the menu key, there is an option to set the song as your ringtone.
Those are some basic questions/tips that owners of LG Ally should know, if you have any questions please ask.

Wi-Fi Tether on LG Ally
--If you got a rooted LG Ally use Barnicle, stop experimenting people, trying all these different apps like PDANet, Barnicle has been tested, it works, use it.

Themes/Homes for LG Ally
--I did a few tests on different customization apps for the Ally and theres the results. (Starting with the best and ending with the worst), I compared speed > looks **Note: these are all free.**

I must note that with stock android theme I was getting 25-40MB free RAM, and 30-45 RAM with LG theme, so I'll be comparing these to stock ones.
1. LauncherPro --- Also a pretty good/speedy home replacement but not a lot of options. 50-70MB free RAM. **LAUNCHERPRO BECAME THE BEST ONE AFTER THE RECENT UPDATES**
2. Home++ --- This is the best one, with both speed and looks it wins. Extremely customizable, gives Android a whole new experience. It does have many options so it'll take a good 15-20min to explore all of its features. Also extremely fast, 40-70MB free RAM. A+! (It did have it freeze my phone once after I installed it so I had to pull the battery but after that no issues at all, so I guess restarting your phone after you install it is not a bad idea)
3. PandaHome --- Works pretty good with the stock theme that it comes with, installing more themes makes it slower, but I guess that's based on how well the theme is optimized. 30-40 free RAM.
4. ADW Launcher --- Some people might disagree with me on this one but I did have lag issues with it, and my RAM being eaten, I must agree that it looks pretty good but if you are all about speed this might not be the app for you. 15-30MB free RAM.

Thats pretty much it, there are other ones that I tried but they were either way too simple or way too unstable so I didn't bother telling about them.

Keyboard Backlight
--The keyboard backlight on the Ally is like 5-10 second's, LG already know's about this and they're working on changing that but for now use an app called Lite On, its been reported that it extends the keyboard backlight.

Flashing Custom ROM's to LG Ally
--http://androidforums.com/ally-all-things-root/158417-how-flash-roms.html

Understanding what your LG Ally is capable of
--LG Ally is a simple smartphone that fits most "info-dependent" people. It is not a 3D gaming machine because it doesn't have a dedicated GPU (Graphics Processing Unit). It will run simple 2D games, and some emulators but if you are expecting to play games like Need for Speed on it, forget it. I believe that with FroYo update the Ally will be a little better at games but dont expect too much boost.

Nice primer on the Ally. Thanks!

Is your info on Ally updates an update to your earlier post regarding 2.2? Meaning that the official line is that we may or may not get a 2.2 upgrade?

We will get an upgrade, that has been confirmed so its 100% guaranteed we will, there is a thing going around that LG might have 1 more update coming to current 2.1 firmware before they upgrade the Ally to 2.2.

Thanks a lot for the tips as my girlfriend just got this phone two weeks ago and me being the geek, I'm the one that gets to fix it. This is my first experience with an Android based phone so I do have a few questions that I haven't been able to figure out (just started looking on this site today)

1) Battery life seems to be pretty lame, she isn't running a lot of apps and I turned off GPS right away and it seems to drain itself almost overnight.
2) If you turn the phone onto vibrate then turn the sound back up, the sound won't work from a notification standpoint.
3) Out of the box she wasn't able to text groups, but I was able to find an app for that and seems to work well.

I can say that I'll be getting an Android phone here in December (goodbye Windows Mobile) I just have to figure out what I'll get from Sprint...

1. Check to make sure you dont have the 50% bug, search around you'll find it, I'll try to find a topic that I made on it and post the link in a second
http://androidforums.com/lg-ally/90707-oh-no-ally-has-dreaded-50-bug.html <<< READ THAT WHOLE THING, THERES MULTIPLE FIXES THERE, NOTE THAT THEY ARE TEMPORARY SO YOU HAVE TO DO EM EVERYTIME YOU RESTART THE PHONE, I RECOMMEND THE AIRPLANE TRICK.

2. I dont know what the sound issue is, I never had this, but try going into settings and raising all sounds up, Android has volume controls for everything separate.

3. I dont think android text messaging app supports this, I'm not sure I use Google Voice and get texting for free, I dont believe in paying $20 bucks for not even unlimited texting.

I'd venture to say she has the 50% bug, I'll test it out once I get in front of it again.

She figured that one out, so I'll have to have her show me.

Straight out of the box, no it wouldn't (why when I could text groups of people with a crappy flip phone and my current WinMo phone could), I got that issue resolved though (she coaches two sports and needed that functionality otherwise she'd probably kill me)

Thanks for the help!

I just checked the android stock messanger and you can actually add more than one person to receive the text, after you add one person itll go to let u type the message just click on the recipients bar again and keep typing more people in. Just like windows mobile (well i dont know which one you had, i had the Moto Q9M with WinMo6.1)

Im fairly new to the android system aswell. I have a task killer on my phone and it seems to help out a lot. As far a speeding up the phone goes. my phone will start acting sluggish and ill go into my app killer and there will be a whole slew of things on the list. ill kill them all and the phone will smooth right out. so i guess what im saying is im not sure why you wouldnt want a task killer. i am by no means saying your info is incorrect because as i said im new to this system. but for me in my case it seems to help out a lot.

Yeah I saw that too, however she wanted to click the group "swimmers" and send it to all 70 of her kids...

I have the HTC TouchPro 2 with 6.5 on it. I can setup a group of people and text or email them in one click...

I have had the opposite result with ADW Launcher. After installation I get 55-70MB free ram. I also found that by deleting the 'Power Panel' widget and using free individual widgets for Bluetooth, brightness and airplane mode I picked up quite a bit more Ram. Also, putting the phone into airplane mode then powering it off then on then setting airplane mode off I recover all my memory and have seen it as high as 78MB ram which balances out through the day at about 60 MB.

Seems like each phone reacts differently due to the number of setup permutations. We should have a topic similar to yours and compare success stories based on what widgets, apps etc are live.

Yea I agree, well I did try this again, did a reset pretty much the same result, I am guessing its somehow involved in different builds. There's different builds of 2.1 on the Ally's which is why some of us have the 50% bug =/....

CAN A MOD PLEASE PIN THIS???

I too have the 50% bug but setting to airplane mode, shutting off phone, waiting a couple of minutes, turning it back on and taking off airplane mode resolves the 50% bug. I am on 2.1 firmware v8. If I do this once a day everything seems fine.

Well yeah it helps my battery too, but the phone is suppose to get 300 hours standby time if it worked fine, even with the trick I wont even get 48 hours so its definitely not a solution.
