Do you like the Samsung Captivate?

There have been a lot of threads both touting the quality of this phone and whining and bitching about its drawbacks. Let's make it official. Do you like the Captivate? Feel free to elaborate, or just take the poll.

Have played with a few phones before I purchased (backflip, iPhone 3gs & 4, aria, glisten and curve). Chose the Captivate due to the speed of operation, the screen (colors, brightness, clarity) and the availability of apps. So far I have not been disappointed as this phone does everything I expected and more. I haven't had some of the problems others have and I give the Captivate 2 thumbs up!

My biggest problem with this phone is how you "wake it". The button on the side is poorly placed and awkward (iPhone is much better method). One other dislike is the way the phone drops into screen-save mode when you answer a call. (have screen save set for 10 minutes but as soon as I answer a call, phone to face, you have to "unlock" to continue.

I've been having problems with my headphone jack, and so naturally been thinking about returning her and waiting on the next big thing. But as soon as I sat down at work and started web surfing, finding more apps, checking my email (I actually check my email and answer Google chat messages on Sally instead of my PC because she makes it so enjoyable), I just can't give her up.

My new plan is to see if I can get the headphone jack problem to consistently reproduce and just exchange her for a new handset (and be more careful about water exposure! good grief).

The pros far outweigh the cons.

The list of pros is too long, but to list a few:
- It's thin and fits perfectly in the pocket despite the relatively huge beautiful screen
- All the standard apps (messaging, email, camera, etc) are great and useful and fun
- The build quality of the phone is excellent, not "cheap" even though it's so light
- Integration with gmail, a huge plus
- I can drag and drop music to it!
- Swype! Holy cow.. How can anyone use anything else? It's like magic


The complete list of cons (for me):
- GPS
- The back light and sensitivity of the front buttons are poorly implemented

Haven't had any of the GPS problems, battery life is excellent, get a couple weird slowdowns a day but it's barely noticeable. The power button placement still bugs me, I'm constantly accidently changing my volume level. Have not regretted dumping the iphone for a second.

I had a plethora of issues with mine, and yet almost traded it for another one. As it stood I went with the safety/security of the ip4 - and I have not had any issues - in fact I cannot duplicate the death grip and trust me, I have tried - makes me wonder if they did not put a coating of some kind on the antenna - they claim that they have not.

Anyway, I voted the second area, but I think you should add one Love it, but took it back anway, for something else.

I went back to my old iphone till samsung releases a fix for gps and possibly froyo. My main issue with the phone is samsung, I dont really trust their support of the phone. So i will play the wait and see game, as soon as october rolls around i can make a final decison what to do. For the record I had an original captivate and replacement captivate both had gps issues, I also had some reception dropping issues if you touch phone goes down two bars.

I love this phone. I switched from the iPhone 4. I was an
iphone user for over a year with a 3G prior to the IP 4.

I was totally bored with iOS. I have no regrets. Sure, the phone has some quirks but all phones do. Once you understand them, it's easy to work around them.

navigation buttons and "better" haptic feedback (a la HTC phones) are the only thing that annoy me, otherwise I love it

well, that and I wish it had a dedicated camera button

I don't believe that I've had it long enough to really rate it yet. I was going to write an article about the phone with a few days left for people to return it if they wanted, and changed my mind as I didn't feel like I had anything beneficial to add to the conversation.

There is no perfect device. And let's be honest; most AT&T customers aren't in love with the service or the options. Unless they own an iphone. That's not a hit on the iphone, it's just that those customers equate quality of product with quality of service. If AT&T was the only carrier of Android phones we'd all be happy customers.

Like the PS3, this phone has potential. And most of us will have this phone for 1 to 2 years. So, I'm willing to give them a couple of months to smooth out the issues (as long as they do get smoothed out).

That aside, my biggest gripe which should be easy to fix is that the camera doesn't work after it reaches a certain battery level. It's very possible that had I experienced that prior to today I would have returned the phone. Now I'm just hoping they change that with an update.

I've owned my Captivate for a week. My first Android. I am happy with it. I left Verizon...could not wait for the "facinate", and the phone/text/data plan worked better for me ($$$). Access to ATT in Atlanta is fine. I am working to customize my captivate. The screen, speed, and features sold me. GPS is not a big deal for me, but I am looking forward to the Froyo update! Love it, despite the issues. I feel confident they're temporary and the future looks bright to get them resolved in a month or so. Meanwhile, it's loads better than an iPhone or anything else out there. Android advances far-better than iPhone's OS and 2.2 is exciting.

I love the phone as a smartphone device, but as a phone it sucks. The fact that the phone sleeps during a call sucks, the button placement is poor, and the unlit buttons is a mistake. As a computer, game app, mobile internet/video, its awesome - though battery life could be better.

i love the phone i had an iphone and i thought about the iphone4 but after messing with the captivate at the ATT store i knew i had to get it. and the gps does bug me, but i dont use it that often and i know it will be fixed so its all good

Yes, I think this is a nearly perfect Android phone, and will be completely happy when the GPS fix rolls out (so long as it actually is a fix). The JIT compiling used in Froyo not only speeds up the phone (which the Captivate is already perhaps best out there until the rumored dual cores come out, and maybe even then as dual cores depend upon implementation just like our GPS chip), but did improve my N1's battery life. This should more than take care of any "lagginess" experienced- although I have to say I have been fortunate I guess and have not noticed any.
Part of me wasn't too worried about it at launch (and still am not now), but I do SOMETIMES wish the camera had a flash. I know they usually just ruin most pics and generally the "night mode" is better, but there have been times when the environment has been too dark for the night mode and even though a flash would have bleached out the picture, at least I would have gotten a picture...
I have had "smartphones" for the last four or five years, and I have to say the Captivate has most impressed me thus far, and once the fix comes out, it is hard for me to see how anything will top it in the next year or so (unless we don't get Gingerbread)...

As much bitching as I do about this phone, I did not take it back. For the most part, it is a good phone. Gorgeous screen, nice and thin and lightweight. I could've gone back to the iPhone but decided to stick with Android. It's not nearly as polished as iOS but I appreciate the added functionality. If Samsung fixes the GPS I'd be totally satisfied.

"Sleeps during a call"? Do you mean the screen goes blank when the proximity sensor detects it is near your face? That is the intended behavior. I wish it should "wake up" the screen a second or so faster after you are finished talking, but it is not terrible. I do agree about the front buttons though... accidentally hit them many times.

My 30 day trial is up tomorrow. I have spent the last 2 days looking again at all the latest and greatest options from all the different carriers. As hard as I try - I cannot find another phone that that hits that sweet spot of form and function. I give up... I'm keeping my Captivate!

lovin my cappy....haha jk. im lovin my captivate! i did have a bunk one when i purchased it before the release date, then i exchanged it for another one. the new one i have has no issues with gps and isnt laggy or buggy.
