I realize that the Android OS does not allow for sound profiles, but does it have anything akin to "Bedside Mode"?
There's not a stock sound profile that I am aware of. There are a couple apps that you can use to accomplish this. I use Quick Profiles and set up four different profiles. Selecting each one changes the wifi, bluetooth, media volume, notification volume, ringer mode and volume, etc.
I soon found out that the stock pop3 email client stank and switched to K-9 and now have all 4 of my pop3 accounts listed. Happy me. However I miss seeing one icon for each mail account. Is there anyway to accomplish this or do I need to get used to it?
If I understand you correctly you can use Better Cut to accomplish this, i.e. you want an icon for your Gmail or Yahoo account in K-9 to be to on one of your home screens.
I also use Better Cut to put each of my sound profiles on one of my home screens so I can hit Normal, Work, Car, and Silent profiles when needed with a swipe to unlock and a press to select.
I have some favorite ring tones and alarm sounds and would like to get them on my Droid X. How can I do this? USB sync? Just email them to my self from my laptop? What directory should I put them in, MP3?
You can do any of them. Personally, I'm using Motorola's Media Link. It is not the fastest but I just need to do basic stuff. If you use Motorola's software your files will be placed in the "mobile" folder on the SD card. Depending on what type of file (.mp3, .mp4, etc.) they will be placed in the folders under "mobile." FWIW, you can place your files anywhere on your SD card and the gallery should find them. The only exception to this that I am aware of is if the folder has a "." as the first character in the name. The gallery won't see these but a file explorer does.
Call me a hierarchical crumedegon, but I'd rather not see every icon listed alphabetically. So I wanted to create folders and then put like applications in them. I was able to create a folder, but could not rename it (I.e. navigation, media, tools, calculators, etc..). Am I missing something?
You're not missing anything as there is no stock way of doing this. I would suggest App Organizer. It is very easy and quick to use.
I turn off wifi and the GPS functionality until I need them. I don't use live wall papers and no social media apps are running. What else can I do to improve battery life?
Your display and cell recption. Set it to 50% brightness and have good coverage, simple as that. The main drawback on that is you don't get to show off that wonderful screen when doing this. Other items, check to see when you off-peak hours, and the refresh of any other apps such as email, widgets, etc.
As for my initial impressions: This phone is fast. The email client may suck, but displaying of email beat BB hands down. Messaging isnt too bad either but the SMS app could use some work. Finally, the browser; great googly moogly. This thing is a world apart and an improvement over the BB browser. I wouldnt mind social apps like FB if they didnt drain so much power. Short of the long I think I am keeping the Droid X, but will with hold judgment for the next 28 days.
Have you tried Dolphin HD browser? Great app with tabs! I have never owned a Blackberry but coming from my old Moto Q running Win Mobile 5, I never realized I had phone shame until I got my X.
