State of Confusion (FL too)
Hello...

I often find myself wanted to text a message...either text or perhaps a picture attachment through the Messaging service...to not only a mobile number but to an EMAIL ADDRESS as well. I have a couple friends who prefer getting pictures on their computer instead of their phone so I might address the MMS to a few mobile phone number and then want to enter an EMAIL ADDRESS in my text message.

On my old phone..as a matter of fact ALL my previous phones (Palm Centro, Couple Samsungs, Sanyo, etc...both smartphones and not-so-smart phones) I was able to type in, e.g., my name "Scott" and popup would show not only my mobile number but my EMAIL ADDRESS to select to use as an address in my SMS or MMS message.

HOWEVER, my my EVO, if I type in a contact name that has an associated email address ONLY THE MOBILE NUMBER comes up as a possible address for my text message. If I want to send to an email address (which you CAN do...text to email works fine...and vice versa) I have to M-A-N-U-A-L-L-Y type the whooooooole email address each and every time.

I do NOT think there is a "setting" to change this but IS there a setting or some sort of workaround trick so that when I type a contact name with an email address the EMAIL OPTION is available in a text message "To" field??

THANKS!

Why not just send an email with an attachment?

I know I can do that but, like I said, it is often in conjunction with sending a text to multiple people's MOBILE NUMBER and then one or two emails...send an MMS picture to joe, john, greg and gary's MOBILE but HARRY prefers pictures sent to his computer. I got 4 MOBILES to send and ONE email.

Also, the circumstance arises if I want to FORWARD a text message...perhaps a picture I received or a list that I need to save on my computer. LONG PRESS the message, choose "Forward" and then you're in text messaging but CANNOT send an email via the text messaging app.

I KNOW I can send as an email but that is often, for me, not the most convenient. It multiple steps...either to send the picture mail to friend's mobiles and then a SEPARATE EMAIL for the same picture to someone else. Or if I want to forward a text I have to select annnnnd copy annnnnd launch the email annnnnnnd address the email...instead of just forward...address to contact "scott"...chose the email address instead of mobile number...send...done...all right in the messaging app.

I could also send the picture via email to everyone's mobile number in the format 1234567890@pm.sprint.com but that is equally if not MORE annoying.

If this is happening often enough to start a topic on it, here is my suggestion... Try building a group of the people you would send this message to. That way, one name (of the group) and you send --->done !

Was aware of that option but creating a group is STATIC...the list of people is saved AS IS. My (additional) problem is that I'm not sending to a static and specific group of the SAME people. The addressees change...

I get that option, when I type in a contacts name I get their number and email address.

Really?? Hmmm...I have a couple questions if you don't mind...

(1) So if you have a contact named "Joe" and you type in "Joe" in the "to" field of the message you get Joe's mobile number AND EMAIL as an option??

(2) If (1) above is true, can you tell me how you have your contact information labeled?? Is "Joe's" email address labeled in his contact as an EMAIL or PHONE number??

(3) What text app are you using?? Stock HTC app or a 3rd party like ChompSMS or Handcent??

While you didnt ask me, I will answer. I use Handcent, and when I type in anything in to: it will look for that in a contact, and give me all the options. there are a couple of contacts that facebook put in that have the same contact info for 20 entries, (looking for a fix for this) that goes for first, last or nickname. it will highlight the part that I typed and it will eliminate contacts as I keep typing...

Helps?

Thanks for the info. Interesting. And as I might have mentioned above, I was having problems with Handcent and converted over to ChompSMS. Don't want to but maybe I need to check Handcent again :(

Any other thoughts from anyone other than me changing apps?? Was hoping there was a way to label a contact or an email address so that it shows up in my ChompSMS??

JParker71..which app are you using???

Stock text will let you do this to individuals or groups. I send SMS and MMS to people's email all the time. The email has to be listed in the contact info though. File size is limited on MMS though so video's don't go very well unless in very small time and low quality to keep the file size down.

I just launched the stock Messages app for the first time in a couple months and, as I typed contacts with known email addresses, I saw them pop up.

Sorry for wasting time here...guess it is a limitation of my ChompSMS texting app....THANKS TO ALL!

FIGURED OUT A FIX!!!

This is for anyone with ChompSMS or any other 3rd party app where email addresses are NOT showing up in contact addresses for a text message.

It does NOT seem that you can do this from your phone but ONLY from your Google/Gmail/Contacts online. I'll explain why below...

So my ChompSMS (and perhaps other text apps) were ONLY showing PHONE NUMBERS and not email addresses for contacts in the "To" field of the text message. If you log in to your contacts ONLINE find the contact that you want to have an email address available in your text message "To" field. You're going to add the email address you want to show up but DO NOT choose to an an "email" because it appears that that "label" for the information you are going to type in will NOT BE RECOGNIZED by the ChompSMS app. Instead, choose to add a "PHONE NUMBER" and I specifically chose the label "MOBILE." Then, instead of typing in a phone number, you can type the EMAIL ADDRESS in that area. Save the contact and you will see "Mobile" and the email address you just typed.

It appears that you have now "tricked" ChompSMS into listing the "mobile phone number" which you have just entered as an email address. Sync your phone to the online Contracts and the next time you try to address a text message, the email address will be available!!

The reason I found that I could NOT do this on the phone and had to do it online was because if I chose to enter a new "mobile phone number" with the intention of typing an email address, the phone ONLY LET ME ENTER NUMBERS...no letters...and therefore couldn't enter the email address to save to my contacts on my phone.

Well, thanks to everyone with their thought...I helped MYSELF here with the above info and hope I might help someone else!! :))
