Why Launcher Pro with Froyo?

Ok, I've loved Launcher Pro (free) for a few months on my Droid1. Just got the Froyo update this morning, and I'm trying to figure out why I need Launcher Pro any more.

I realize Launcher Pro has 4 dock icons vs. Froyo's 2. I never used the scrollable dock in LP, and I realize the 2 in Froyo aren't user selectable.

I had 5 screens in LP and now get 5 screens in Froyo.

I liked the swipe up option in LP's dock icons but could live without it.

I also liked the fact that LP put more icons on the home screen, and gave me the ability to delete the titles beneath the icons.

But other than those things, is there really a reason to use Launcher Pro, given that it could be lagging the phone?

in my experience, LP was actually faster than the stock launcher. i dont think i could ever go back to the stock one now that i have everything i need on there. i also love the bubble count for missed calls and new text messages. plus the swipe up thing is nice since i like to hide the status bar. also with the paid version, the people and bookmark widgets really come in handy. plus i like being able to customize the dock background...it just makes the phone that much more customized to me and my needs.

but if you dont think you need it, dont use it. i personally wont ever use the stock launcher ever again.

I admit that LauncherPro is slightly less important after getting 2.2.. but I still use it because it allows for more customisation.

-I like to have four icons down in the dock at the bottom
-I use 6 screens (froyo only allows 5)
-LP is just faster.. smoother.. and adds those nice effects with the App drawer
-I use LP to hide all the App in the app drawer which I already have on my screen.. that way I only see my less commonly used apps in the app drawer and they only fill up one screen (so they are easy to get to)
-I like the fact that I can backup my configuration to SD card so after a factory reset it's all back in place after a restore
-i also use LP to hide labels.. I like the way that looks and I got used to it
-the little counters for missed calls and SMS is really nice

Those are the ones which come off the top of my head. There might be more. I tried a few different home replacement.. I even paid for one of them back in my G1 days... but I always got sick of them and reverted to the standard. LauncherPro is the first which is actually better than standard in almost every way.

I was thinking the same thing (though, I don't have 2.2 yet). It's all gonna be personal preference, so just try using the stock launcher for a week and see if there are any features from Launcher Pro that you miss, and also to see if that lag you mentioned is real or just your mind playing tricks on you.

Personally, I've just gotten so used the 4 icons in my dock, that I really need to keep Launcher Pro for that feature alone, if nothing else. I have the paid version and I don't use any of those widgets... I really just like a lot of the little nuances that the dev added to it over the stock launcher - Stuff like how the screens bounce when you swipe, the 3D app drawer, customizing the color that your icons highlight when you tap them, etc. It just ups the "fun factor".

Just checked out launcher pro. Does seem a LITTLE bit quicker and smoother, buuuut, how would I change the icons out on the ottom of the screen. The stationary ones. For example, I use dolphin browser and the stationary button on the bottom uses the default...

Thanks

Press and hold on the icon you want to change, a menu will pop up.

first go to one of of the icon links here if you want custom icons or LP style LauncherPro Forum • View topic - Custom Icons - LINKS then you long press the icon you want to change, find the app you want to use, pess on it, then it will ask what icon you want to use. pick the one you want.

This is exactly what I'm going to do. I really did get used to having more icons per screen and no titles under them.

Also, after reading this another thread, I tried completely turning off screen animations and it really makes the phone seem a lot snappier!

Also, the Bluetooth file transfer kicks butt.

I have personally found that when you go into the options of LP and tone it down and set it up very personally for yourself that it is ALWAYS smooth i never have lagg issues at all... When I forced 2.2 i tried the stock launcher for a couple days and consisdered playing in the freeway to end my pain but then I decided to just go back to LP and am very happy because of it!

I've been using ADW Launcher for a few months now and just tried out LauncherPro but reverted back to ADW. I've found it to be about equal in terms of performance and is more customizable relative to the free version of LP. Plus, I had some issues with screen rotation with LP that I don't have with ADW. At the very least, it's worth trying out the two side-by-side (use HomeSwitcher to switch between them) and seeing which one works best for you.
