Orange 2.2 update

Hi all, I've just been on the phone to Orange customer services (3g down) and whist i was on asked about the 2.2 update. Anyway she checked and said this weekend.... fingers crossed then!

If it comes this weekend that would be 3 weeks from their announcement, instead of the estimated 4 weeks. Hope its true though I'm not crossing anything just yet lol!

This is the latest Tweet by @conorfromorange yesterday about the 2.2 update:

"hi mate, as I previously tweeted-the process (for testing &adding network specific functions) takes about 4 weeks. Still on track"

You are on an Orange talkplan with a stock, unbranded phone, not an Orange branded phone that needs the official update. You have the HTC version of FryYo without Orange branding/apps.

ahhhhh, right...... oh well you guys it's worth the wait it sorted out most of the niggles I had with the phone.

lol! Don't panic just yet. My feeling is that all the networks have been surprised by customer demand for 2.2 and they all seem to be working hard to get it out as soon as they can. It's not like in the recent past where an update was considered much less important because the software only applied to a limited number of handsets, and any updates took months to arrive (if they arrived at all). Android phones are now a major part of the network's customer base, which is why Vodafone, Orange, etc are actually keeping customers updated (at last!)

Curious about the 'official' orange update - I currently have an unbranded desire on the orange network, when orange roll out their official update, will I get another update notification & will they try to force their software on my phone like what vodafone did?

have you already got 2.2? If so, then you never had an Orange 2.1 ROM so you won't be asked if you want the Orange update. Only handsets with an Orange ROM will be notified about the official update.

ok....I guess I am at my wits end on getting this fixed. So here goes,

Bought a HTC Dsire Phone locked to Orange when it first came out (wth 2.1) Unlocked the phone from the operator. <Ok I deleted the unlock code from my email -- trust me its gone> Moved to Singapore. found out that 2.2 is coming but cant seem to get a straight answer if whether I can get pushed the update while I am in Singapore without the Orange SIM. Any help would be great if someone can tell me how I can upgrade to 2.2.

Be interesting to see how much Orange crap is installed this time around. Whilst it'd be nice to think they've taken notice of the Vodafone backlash and reduced it, I can't see it myself.

Can pretty much guarantee they'll disable the WiFi hotspot functionality though.

a) How can service providors bung loads of bloatware on a phone without the customer having the ability to remove it (without debranding, etc)

and

b) How can service providers justify disabling certain features of an OS because it doesn't suit them?

With regards to (a), do you mean how can they technically do it or how can they justify it? Technically it's easy, they just create their own version of the ROM image with stuff "hard-coded" into it. As for justifying it, that's a lot harder - they have to tread a fine line between the additional revenue they get from use of these bundled apps and services with the loss of revenue from potential customers being driven away to other networks.

As for (b), Orange, along with most (all?) other UK networks, ban tethering in their Terms & Conditions as they like to charge you an additional fee for this service. This would obviously make them feel justified in removing things like the WiFi Hotspot feature as it just makes it "too easy" for the average person to do. They may not remove it to allow the feature for those who do choose to pay for the service but I understand quite a few US networks remove such features from their phones for this reason.

I can never understand the network's attidute to tethering. I pay my bill, it's my data allowance, I should be able to use it how I want.

It's not the weekend yet. Or "4 weeks" for that matter (that's next weekend...). Call me cynical, but if I get 2.2 this weekend I'll eat my work Blackberry.
