Root strip phone and reinstall?

I went through a long process last night of trying to fix a problem I was having with my SD card. To make a long story short I ended up basically starting over and reloading everything and although it was a pain the phone operates much crisper than yesterday. Has anyone else ever noticed this? Are there ways to clean up your phone periodically without reinstalling everything or could this just be a Launcher Pro thing?

If you go into recovery and clear cache (not data) periodically, some folks claim it helps speed things along.

So in Rom Manager I woud "Reboot into Recovery", clear cache and then reboot?
