Visual Voice Mail Via Google Voice

Hello everyone, I tried searching for the question I'm about to ask and didn't find any threads so here it goes,

Can someone post the steps to setting up Google Voice as visual voice mail for the Captivate? I know it's probably something very simple but I just can't figure it out ( yes, I'm a bit slow ). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

1. Enter the following exactly as written, as if you are dialing someone: *004*1"your google voice number"#

2. Press "Send" or "Call" on your phone to dial that number. When you see the confirmation message on your phone, you are done!

OK, dumber than a box of rocks here, but can you please indicate exactly what I need to enter into the phone to do this. I tried *004* nothing, than *004*1 nothing, than *004*1#, than *004*18047771234 nothing, and finally *004*18047771234# and yet nothing again.

Google visual voicemail works great. I recommend that you set it up using your computer and not your phone. Google will walk you through the setup process step by step - what numbers to dial to set up call forwarding, etc. Very simple.

Yes. The only thing I use my special Google phone # for is for calling in to check my voicemail instead of calling my cell # to check my voicemail. The process it walks you through changes this automatically if I remember correctly.

I don't remember the exact steps but I do remember I did it while at a PC and there were some steps I did on my phone, and some using the Google Voice website. Google walked me through exactly what to do when (which included typing in obscure codes into my phone) and it all went smoothly. I then tweaked some other options after the fact on the website.

What happens now is this:

- The only # people use continues to be my actual cell #
- Google Voice handles all voicemails
- When I get a voicemail, I have Google Voice send me an email notification (handy if for some reason I don't have my phone with me)
- I set the Google Voice app as one of my dock icons.
- When my phone tells me I have a voicemail, the Google Voice app immediately shows the voicemail, even if there's no transcript yet completed
- If I have sufficient data connection, I can play the voicemail even before the transcript is done
- Otherwise, as long as I have cell reception, I can call my voicemail (speed dial 1) and listen to it the traditional way.
- After a few mins of receiving the voicemail, the Google Voice app will also show a text transcript of the voicemail without having to listen to it. It's not 100% accurate, but enough to give you the general idea of the message.

I did notice there doesn't seem to be a way to delete the voicemail if you call the number. Not a big deal, since I can just delete it later through the Google Voice app.

just set mine up too... i went the route of simply getting visual voicemail set up instead of using a google number for people to contact me... pretty slick thing they got going on here... i opted to only have an email sent to me (no sms) and installed the Voice app... transcribing the voicemail worked well in my simple test "test call for google voice"... the only issue so far is that there is no audio in the voice app... i tried to mute/unmute and it just doesn't get my audio... i can listen to the vm via the web in my gmail or gvoice pages but i can't get audio in the Voice app... pretty annoying... unsure of what the issue might be!

1. The transcripts the Goolgle sends will it count towards the data usage?
2. The SMS notification Google sends will it be treated as SMS that AT&T charges $0.20 per message?

I believe you can set it up to email you instead of SMS.

I've had a Google Voice account for a while but never really used it. I was using Youmail on my phone and I just switched it to Voice. Amazing! I love the transcribing of messages...Great thread!

No one is forcing you to come read things here. Sorry for asking more. Where do I find these settings? Google Voice on the Web? or the Voice app on the phone? On the Web settings I have unchecked "Send text message (SMS) to Mobile" option. Anything else I need to do to get free texts?

Go to Google Voice online: https://www.google.com/voice#inbox

Click on Settings next to your GV phone number, then select Voice Settings. This should default you to the phones tab. If you have your cell-phone number listed here, click on the Edit button. Then uncheck "Receive text messages on this phone" and save. GV will no longer forward text messages to that number.

If that was checked, you'd get texts through both your phone messaging app and your Google Voice app. Unchecked, it only comes though GV.

Again, the sender must be using your Google Voice number. If they use your cell number, you'll still be charged.

On the Web settings I have unchecked "Send text message (SMS) to Mobile" option.

If that's on the Voicemail & Text tab, that option is to inform you about voicemails. You may still want that?

I think he means in the web version, at least that's where I found it. Just log in, go to the settings option (upper right hand corner of the browser) select voice settings. Middle of the screen you'll see a phone tab, make sure that is select then under whichever phone number there is a edit button, push that and you'll see the check box.

The only other place that I see is within the same area but within the Voicemail & Text tab there is a area that's called Voicemail notifications and one checkbox is for Send a text (SMS) message to:.

I tested out the settings by calling my cell from my work phone, lol. You could test it out as well then also check and see if you have any unusual charges with your online bill. =) If you did happen to miss something at least it wouldn't go for a month without you realizing if you monitor it for a day or two.
