Screen tint on newer vs older Captivate

Hey guys well I just received a replacement Captivate from amazon, and because of their return policy I have some time to compare the replacement to my original one. I havent checked when they were made yet, but I know that the batteries are dated 6/27 and 7/13. Anyway, the first thing I noticed was that the 2 have completely different screens. The original has the bluish tint, while it doesnt appear nearly as blue, and seemingly much more neutral, on the replacement. Also, it seems like the replacement's screen is brighter. I dont know if its because of the tint or age, etc. But thats how it looks.

I'll post more on any differences I find, but I dont have the time right now to confirm results for those yet. However I think I found some differences in camera and GPS so far.

Heres a picture, the replacement is on the left:

I noticed the same thing. I got 2 phones about 2 weeks ago and both had a blueish tint, one was much worse than the other. I exchanged the one with the worse blue tint(for a different reason) and the replacement was a much warmer more natural white, just like in your picture. The blueish screen appears grayish and not as bright even though the brightness settings are exactly the same. My eyes much prefer the warmer more natural white as blueish tint tends to bother me when reading text. I am thinking of returning the blueish tint one and asking to look at the screen of the replacement to make sure it is good.

I've noticed the same thing. My first was built on July 5 and the replacement on July 23. The replacement has a noticeably warmer spectrum. The one positive thing I can say about the older phone with the bluer tint is that when turned off the screen had this very distinctive, and pleasant, reflective blue sheen to it. The replacement has it too, but not to the same extent.

Actually, my Captivate, bought on launch day, had far less blue push, and was a good deal brighter at min or max or auto, at least compared to my first and second Bell Vibrants side by side.

I think there's just some QC variability for the panels in general. BTW, my Captivate was a 6/30 build, my current Vibrant a 7/22, and the one I returned was a 7/05, if memory serves.

Is that just your opinion or do you have some inside info?

Inside info is that nearly all the phones that were returned because of horrible battery life issue where the Display was the max % usage even when the phone wasn't really used, have the really deep blue tint to them.

The rumour is, and this is NOT confirmed, that the deep blue ones are sucking battery like no tomorrow because the backlight turns off but the display circuitry does not. I can't find it but there's a pic somewhere of a phone with the display "off" where they shine a led flashlight on it and you can see the pixels are still being displayed.

I'm glad I exchanged mine then.

What do you mean "horrible battery life issues"?

I dont know, mine seems to run out of battery faster than I'd like, yet I've never had a smartphone before to compare against, so i dont know what's "normal".

My brother who does have prior smartphone experience, said these phones simply require charging ever night and thats that. So I thought it was ok. But like I said, now I'm just worried, is my battery life defective or not?

And what do you mean "display was the max % usage even when not being used". How do I go about finding out if my "display is 100% max usage even when not being used"? Please be more specific. Is there something I can look at to tell me?

Also, I was under the impression the reason for the blue tint was because blue pixels wear out faster on AMOLED displays, therefore "weighting" the screen to blue initially will cause the blue levels to level out more in line with the rest of the display over time.

Also it'd be really nice if you could find that picture you reference of the flash lite showing the pixels.

Worse I'm outside my 30 days, so I might have to go through samsung warranty to replace. And I would hate having to be like "well, I think the battery life is kind of bad, but I'm not sure" to try to explain whats wrong with it, doubt theyd even accept that as a reason for return.

Charge your phone to 100%. Pull it off the charger and open the browser or something, exit back to the main menu. Let it sit there for 8 hours without picking it up (make sure the display is off). At the end of 4 hours look at the battery status. Is the display the highest % used? Do you have less than 50% battery? Then your phone is defective.

If these circumstances do not apply to you then your phone is fine!

Where are you guys finding the build date?

Cool thanks! But did you mean check it after 8 hours or 4 hours? I guess it doesn't matter the principal is the same.

But I also dont see, why open the browser? To have something that should use the most power on the list, ahead of display, I suppose?

Whew, I'm glad I can find out if I have this problem now, rather than just worrying about it. Will do this test in a couple days when I'm off work.

My phone I think has a pretty heavy blue tint btw, but I can live with that easily.

This is the first I've heard of this problem! I just looked at my phone and it does have a deep blue color on the screen when the display is off. And I've noticed from day 1 that the display generally uses 40% or more of the battery, even though the screen is off most of the time.

So should I be contacting Samsung about this? I believe I'm past my 30 days already.

You should do this test. My 2 phones used about 3-4% with this test after 6 hours.

I meant 4 hours. The point is you do something that uses the display but doesn't use any background data, but then quit back to the home screen and let the display time out and turn off. If your phone is defective then after a long time when you check the status it will show Display being the highest thing on the list, even though you didn't even use it, and this is because it never really turned off like it was supposed to.
