Root HELP! Phone won't book after a flashed zip (nandroid option not available)

This is my first post on this forum (figures I'll jump head in when I have a serious issue, ha?)

Ok here goes:


My Issue: HTC Desire is stuck on boot-up screen with Green HTC logo forever.

How it happened: I tried flashing a script using ROM Manager that was supposed to correct some local language settings, over my current rom.

Phone state before action: Worked beautifully using Modaco R8 RC1 ROM. Phone is of course rooted.

Why I can't solve it myself: Well, this is my first serious issue (well, I hope it's not serious, actually!) with phone, which i've had for about a week , so I'm relatively a n00b.

-- I can access Clockworkmod recovery. However, under NANDROID RESTORE there are no files. I have no idea why, because I DID a full nandroid backup before that last install. I have a copy of all the IMG files of the last working setup on my windows machine hard drive, and my assumption now is that maybe I accidentally moved the files to the hard drive after i did that backup, instead of copying them.

Now -

1) Can I somehow restore the phone to a working state without the nandroid backup, using some other function of the CW Mod recovery?

2) Can I somehow connect the phone via USB to the computer and get it to read the Micro SD card so I could maybe move the IMG files I have back to SD Card (using some mounting options)?

3) Anything else I could try?

If nothing else, please just calm me down if you can and let me know the phone is fixable and not bricked because I can access recovery?! That would at least help me go through the night...

last note: Before I flashed the zip, ROM Manager indicated my CW Mod version is 2.0.5.7. Within the recovery itself, it says the version is only 2.0.5.1. Don't know why that is , and if it is important.

Put your sd card in a card reader if you have one & copy those files back that way.
Failing that flash the rom file again if you still have it on your sd card, be like it was when you first flashed it then.

Hi, I've actually solved the problem today without using an SD card nor clockwork. I connected the device to the PC via USB while turned on and within CM , then worked my way out of the problem by pushing the files in using ADB.


Just for my general knowledge.. how do you mount the SD Card natively using CM?

I'm feeling like a fool, I can't get into CM right now as I forget how to do it. I only rooted last night, but I belive the option was under the SD Card formatting. For sure it is the last option in a list.

Sorry I'm not more help, but glad you fixed your problem. The more I learn, the more I realize totally wrecking these things is not a common occurance!

To boot into recovery: Hold Volume Down and press Power.

To mount SD card under ClockwordMod recovery it's something like: Partitions -> Mount SD

Should I see clockwork as soon as I boot into recovery mode? It looks like the original one, not what I saw when I rooted. I hit the recovery option and the phone hung for like 10 mins so I pulled the battery. Boots fine, and I'm stil rooted so I didn't somehow undo that.

The bootloader looks like the original one, but if you select Recovery it should go into clockwork. If its freezing as you say it sounds like something gone wrong with the recovery flash itself.

Thanks Felix, I'm getting that impression. I got Rom Manager and it could not boot me into recovery either. I will re-flash clockwork recovery tonight, Maybe that will fix it. It should not hang for more than a min right? It was speedy fast when I rooted.

Mine has always gone straight into it. I haven't tried another ROM yet but I have had a play with Clockwork a little bit to see what it offers in case I do or just to learn about the program. As you said a minute or more seems extreme there really doesn't seem much behind it in terms of complexity to the menus.

Did you Goldcard or Unrevoked? From what anoniemouse seems to be mentioning Goldcard seems to be useful if you need to restore the phone to stock while Unrevoked seems to be the easy option for changing to root. Maybe if you flash back to stock if all fails and try again?

What exactly does it do when you highlight Recovery and press the Power Button to select it? Does the screen go blank? Do you see an icon/image on the screen? Does it just stay on the previous menu?

Sorry must have missed the post - On mine if I select recovery it loads clockwork mod with a black/dark green background and green text.

I think if you see an exclamation icon that is the original recovery. That will not load custom roms.

Yeah, every now and again clockworkMod "breaks" on me and I get that. I have to reflash and usually I am good to go again.

You have nothing on nandroid because nandroid backups are stored on your SD card, which I'm assuming is now blank. If you can get into recovery you can mount the card and copy back your files from your computer, assuming you backed them up before the format. You should then be able to restore your nandroid backup.

If you don't have a backup, you may be able to find one close to yours online. I know someone found one for a Telus rooted phone.

Otherwise, flash a new rom.
