Root It's Sunday.. got the root bug

I hate to start a new thread since there are so many but what the heck, it's been a while.

I have everything downloaded. I have Roms, I have Kernals, I have a new radio, Titanium, and I'm connected. So here are my questions.

1. Do I flash the new radio before I root? If so, what are the ramifications when OTA comes out and I want to go that route?
2. Will the new radio wipe out any of my apps? (obviously I want to go to 2.2)
3. By rooting initially will it wipe my current 2.1 apps, I know flashing 2.2 will?
4. If I can get the new radio and root without wiping my stuff, will Titanium allow me to simply reinstall my apps after my Froyo update? The only few I really care about are my paid ones, such as Touchdown, RadioTime etc.

Which radio you wanting? If 2.15 you'll need unrevoked forever in addition to root. So if that's your path of travel, I'd say root, nand backup, forever, radio, Rom, kernel.

2.1 only apps won't work but most major apps already work with 2.2

Yes, 2.15. From what I understand it's necessary for Froyo GPS and camera. Unrevoked forever sets s-off right? Got to check my apps now too.

I was exactly where you were yesterday and last night I was completely done with it all. You can root without loosing anything. If you're not sure yet, you can root, run a Nandroid backup to copy everything, then Titanium to copy all your apps and data in case you decide to go further, you have your original apps to reinstall.

Well the other option is the 2.05 radio but the fear that comes with that one is double flashing = brick. A 2.x radio will allow everything to work WITH the proper rom.

A nandroid backup will restore everything like an exact mirror EXCEPT radio (OS, kernel, apps, settings, data are all backed up just like a Windows restore). If you want to load Titanium once you get rooted, fine but then immediately do a nand backup so you have a safe restore point. Do not proceed with flashing radio/roms/kernels until you use Clockwork Mod to nand backup.

Once you go from 2.1 to 2.2, make sure to restore apps only when using Titanium in batch restore mode. Don't do Apps+data or system data as it'll almost certainly cause system stability issues due to incompatibility. This means you'll have to set some things back up manually when making that initial switch but it will be WELL WORTH IT down the road.

Sorry to quote myself but just to be more specific since you're going for it all in one shot with a known backup program...

Root > Nand Backup > Download Titanium > Backup apps > Forever (S-Off) > Flash Radio > Flash Rom > Flash kernel if different than the one provided with your Rom of choice.

Also, Rom Manager makes flashing significantly easier if you are interested.

Tip: If you get any popups in Titanium about "busybox" issues, press the Problems button in the Titanium app to proceed.

No big deal when going from a 2.2 rom to another 2.2 rom etc but not so much when going from 2.1 to 2.2.

Waiting for bootloader make sure driver is installed. Got to research this.

Drivers up to date. How long do I have to wait at the bootloader screen?

Once you're good with the drivers, click on the Unrevoked tool to install.

Last question for the evening. Forever is needed to update the radio right, which in turn is needed for Froyo?

Friendly points:

Make sure you have plenty of space on your SD card (at least 2gb to be safe) for nandroid and titanium backups. Nandroid backs up everything but the radio, so it can be huge.

When using titanium when transferring from 2.1 to 2.2 OS, only back up apps, not system data or settings. When restoring from titanium, choose the batch option for apps and data.

If you want to also install a kernel, some are picky, unless 2.2 is already installed BEFORE installing a different kernel. King #2 went in a boot loop on me after installing (nandroid backup saved the day).

I have not fooled with a kernel since the boot loop, so I am using what is on the device already after installing Skyraider 2.52 Sense. SetCPU takes care of main issues anyways, but a lower volt kernel may push me to try again. I just hate boot loops.

Some are available through the ROM Manager app, and some are in the sticky at the very top section.
