has anyone tried using the new facebook places check in service on the incredible? you can use it through facebook touch, there is a tab there for it. i have been trying and trying to use it, but no matter where i am, i cannot get it to find my location. it just hangs and then says "couldn't detect your location. please check your signal and tap here to try again." my gps is on, i have a good data signal, but still, i always get this message. anyone else? is anyone able to get it to work? any ideas why i can't seem to get it to find me? i guess i'll just keep trying in different places. grrrr.

I get the same message. I don't think Places is set up to work with Android yet.

but my brother has used it on his incredible in san francisco. so it does work for the phone, at least for him. i just cannot get it to work, so i'm wondering if maybe i have something set incorrectly. or maybe i just really have not had a good signal yet, but i have been all over minneapolis this weekend trying it, and now back in dc. i just can't get it to find me. but at least someone else has the same issue, so maybe we can get some more people on here to help figure it out. thanks.

I can't find it anywhere to even try...where do I look, it isnt on facebook.xom when i go there and it definitely isnt in the android app where I have checked.....

you have to use facebook touch. there is a separate app called "facebook touch." install that, and then it's on a tab under home. the tab says "places."

i figured it out. i was using the facebook touch app (i have no idea when i even downloaded this, might have been way back when i had my droid), not the fb touch site through my browser. when i use it through my browswer, it works just fine. it's only when i try to use it through this app that it never connects. so...don't use the facebook touch app. which i guess is just a shell for the touch site. anyhow, i believe that is the only issue, as it works perfectly when i just go to the touch site through my browser. thanks for the help guys, sorry to have bothered you. perhaps this will help someone else who might be doing the same thing i am.

why would anyone want to use this service?

I guess they want people to know they're not at home. Possibly they want to get robbed? *shrug* Perhaps they're looking to collect some insurance money?

IMHO, the teen and twenty something generation today is far too trusting, they don't seem to care about privacy at all. We'll see how far this goes when they have the government pounding down their door for something posted on Facebook.

Sorry if this is too political, but I think it needs to be said.

Little behind the times. Facebook is late to the party in terms of location based services (LBS).

My issue is, I don't want to use a LBS provided by facebook. The others post updates to FB if you give it permission. But have the geo location tied so closely to you're profile page and information is a little too much. LBS is an emerging technology and is allowing a new form of word-of-mouth marketing to immerse from mobile platforms.

I understand your issues with privacy, but it all comes down to this: don't put stuff on the web you don't want other people to know. My friends are facebook are exactly that, my friends. I do not have a single person on my facebook that I would not invite to a holiday party. The people i share my LBS app updates too are also in that group. You control your own privacy, not the settings on facebook. If you don't want to be robbed, don't 'friend' people you think would do that.

Think of it as a new technology to adapt to, not something to shun because it isn't familiar. I dunno, thats my opinion, plus I was offered a job to SCVNGR and I support LBS platforms in general.

I couldn't get mine to work either, but I discovered it was because I had the block pop-up setting checked. When you try and set a "place" the first time, you get a pop-up asking you if you want to share your location with the website. Before I never got that prompt and therefore, it could never find my location. That should fix the problem if you are still having it.
