tethering... 3G or 1/2G??

When I originally used my eris for tethering it was fast.. almost as fast as my wireless.. Past 2 days the wireless has been down due to a storm and I was forced to use phone for internet after not using it for months.. Its slow.. almost dial up slow.. even tho the phone shows its in 3G the browsing and download speeds are painfully slow.. any ideas? By the way Im using easy tether. Thanks!!

even here in my house I'll drop from 3g from time to time. Upstairs is fine, however.

if anyone else in your area has the same idea, there could be some network congestion also. remember there is a good reason verizon charges extra for "true" tethering of the full web.

It's possible that the same storm that knocked out your regular ISP (I assume you have DSL or cable) also knocked out some of the other various networking components VZW uses. For example, maybe the power is out at a switching center. Remember, once your data connection is completed through the air to Verizon, it goes through the same connections that your local phone and cable company uses to provide Internet access and phone service.

Probably most likely the case it sounds like to me. 3G shouldn't be ridiculously slow, unless you have a terrible signal. If a lot of the communication lines in your area are out, the ones that do work are probably being congested by traffic. If your in a more rural area, many towers also rely on microwave dishes that connect back to a head area that has access to a T1 line (pretty much all cell phone towers in my area have this). Unfortunately, if that's damaged, all towers in that area are going to be affected.

Have you tried angling the phone? I changed the angle on my phone only slightly and it went from 300-500kb/s to 1.2 MB/s. You may need to hold the phone upright, towards a window, whatever. And it may change your speeds.

I'm rooted, though, and use Wireless Tether which works well.
