When I was at the Corp Store Monday evening, ordering the iPhone 4 for my youngest and for my wife, the lady who was processing my upgrades in the system said she was getting one for herself next payday.

She said she used the PC-end of a USB cable to try to scratch it, swiping on it (demo unit, of course) and could not get it to scratch.

Of course, I ain't trying that sh!t on MY Cappy, just in case...

But, YMMV, that's what SHE said. Got no reason to disbelieve here, really, as she was really cool, and said she had been intrigued by the phone since the day they received them!

Yep, screens always find a way to get scratched. Then again, I never put anything in the same pocket I put my phone in for that reason. I have my 2 year old BB Pearl without a scratch on the screen (used either the BB Leather case or silicon wrap thing).

Um, sorry not to rain on your parade, but the Captivate is standard high strength tempered glass. It is NOT gorilla glass.

If you're worried about scratches, get a screen protector.. it's one of the first two things I buy for every touchscreen phone I own (the second being a case). It's not like they're expensive >_>

I would really like concrete confirmation. It seems nobody really knows for sure. From those links it seems it's safe to assume that the captivate does have gorilla glass.

To what user manual are you referring to? The online one?

@MassacrMan - I fail to see where it says ALL samsung galaxy S phones. Am I missing it? From what I can see it would be safe to assume it is referring to all galaxy S phones, but it could be read a different way. As in the phone that's actually called just the "Samsung Galaxy S" the international version. I want to believe that our captivates have gorilla glass, but that article, unless I'm missing the "all", is not conclusive.

@ baddress - if you are referring to the "tempered glass" remark made in the captivate manual Gorilla Glass IS tempered glass. The statement in the manual could easily be referring to Gorilla Glass.

OK, I've seen you shout, "TEMPERED GLASS!!11ONE" in another thread, but you didn't source your comments in that thread. SO... lessee here:

• the word "glass" is mentioned five times in the user manual
• two of those times, it is referred to as "tempered glass," the rest of the times, it simply says "glass"
• finally, one mention of "glass" actually says, "The display on your handset is made of glass or acrylic..." (p.156)

You can find the manual here (pdf). (seriously, though, why wouldn't you have downloaded this yet if you own this phone? )

Based on all of this info, along w/the Engadget/Android Central articles posted yesterday, I think the best we can glean from the manual with regards to the phone's surface is that the info is inconclusive.

I would like to know a definitive answer; as I've posted in other threads, my Captivate got a single scratch on it before I applied a screen protector.

Just picked up a nice scratch on my screen yesterday. I'm careful about keeping my phone in a pocket with nothing else in it.

I'm currently on the phone trying to confirm if my Captivate has the glass. I would think not, as it is already scratched to hell (I am not the gentlest). I have quasi confirmation from customer support, then tech support, and was just elevated to level three tech support when I requested a phone replacement.

So, level three representative said he WOULD NOT provide ANY proprietary information regarding Samsung phones and welcomed me to send my phone in for warranty replacement, but would not address the screen question AT ALL.

Probably the absolute WORST representative I have even spoken to, so called "Manager of Tech Support" Greg was belligerent when pressed for further information and refused to provide any identifying information I could use to lodge a complaint.

After speaking with Manager Douche Greg, I called Samsung America's Corporate office, who was even less helpful. Over and over I was told they could not provide any coroprate information as to who he reports too.

All in all, I can say for sure, my phone is scratched, and does so EXTREMELY easily. Also, Samsung has the ****ing worst upper level representatives I have ever dealt with and WILL NOT buy another Samsung device...Shitty Customer service will kill a good customer every time.

So far we only have one statement from GGG manufacturer saying something vague about SGS phones having GG. Samsung did not publicly acknowledge anything yet. They won't tell YOU something they have not released to the general public.

As far as that GG statement goes, I can read it as GG is being put in some SGS phones starting now - it is really vague and lacks specifics.

Meh, I know. I wasn't exactly looking for special treatment, just basically digging for what I could find. The first two reps I talked to were extremely nice and very helpful, but the manager had a rotten attitude about him and probably shouldn't be allowed to take phone calls. When I stated he wouldn't tell me anything about the screen, except to send the phone in for warranty replacement, I was referring to the warranty coverage and he wouldn't even tell me if scratches on the screen are covered. Yes, I know I can find this out myself, and they probably are not, but the manager for tech support shouldn't have a problem answering a warranty question before I send my phone away for two weeks.

Aside from confirming my phone has scratches as well, the post was basically a bitch against Samsung customer service.

With two drops on the ground less than two feet with little force (by accident of course), they both had some awful damage. For some reason these phones follow the butter toast theory. You know, where if a piece of buttered toast always lands butter side down. The glass always falls face down. That and the easiness that the glass was scratched, leads me to believe att decided to go the cheap route and forgo the Gorilla Glass.

The phone uses Gorilla Glass. This has been confirmed from both ends (Corning and Samsung). People seem to think that Gorilla Glass is indestructible. It is not. It's stronger than regular glass, but it'll still scratch/crack.

A Captivate falling from 2 feet hits the ground at 11.4 ft/s with the force of approximately 0.7 joules.

It is Gorilla Glass, not Superman Glass. One of the 3 Captivate phone I had had a problem with scratches on the screen. It seemed to be superficial with no depth to the scratches, but I could tell it wasn't manufactured correctly. It almost felt like a very thin top layer was coming off. I returned that one and now the screen of the Captivate I have looks pristine.

Mine broke but I've never gotten a scratch. I ran naked until I dropped it. Now I've got a fully enclosed case that I remove the phone from to use (but has a window that works with the screen so I can use it in the case if I want to. Typing would be hard though.

Went from one extreme to the other I see! That sucks man, I couldn't handle my phone being mummified. Why not just get a normal case? How far up was your drop?

@sremick - could you link the confirmation by samsung? I already believe it is gorilla glass but I didn't know samsung ever confirmed it.
