I have had the Droid Eris for 2 1/2 weeks now and I have to say I have never been so disappointed in a phone. I have had the iPhone for 2 1/2 years before this and most recently the iPhone 3GS. I knew any other phone would be a down grade but I could no longer deal with AT&T.

I am moving on the the Samsung Omnia II on Wednesday, hopefully it is a functional phone unlike the Eris. Hopefully Verizon really does get the iPhone next year, until then I think all of us really do have to choose: Better phone or better network!

The battery sucks, the market apps are bad, the phone is sluggish.

Can't get the droid because it has a keyboard which I hate and it makes it so bulky to put something useless like that on there. Why take up so much room when on screen keyboards are so good?

Maybe if the passion ever truely comes to verizon or the sony x10, then I can give android another try.

You sir, are a moron...
Have you noticed the majority of users are liking the phone far more than the iPhone??
You gave us no reasoning...
Your going to a WINDOWS MOBILE DEVICE DURRRRR...
Your opinion means nothing because obviously you know nothing...

I'm angry

P.S. The Eris didn't like you more than you didn't like the Eris..

I'm sorry, but something that's measured in 8ths of an inch can NEVER be called "bulky". What are you, some Kowai enthusiast? Are you going to use your phone as a slap bracelet? Bookmark? Why the hell do people want their phones so thin, what, are they too hard to break in half at the moment?

And no, sorry, virtual keyboards are NOT "so good". Not even close. I have small hands for a guy and I still make ridiculous mistakes typing with a virtual keyboard, the kind of mistakes I never make with a real keyboard. They're too cramped.

Plus they take up screen real estate. When you turn the phone to landscape, oh look NOTHING on the screen except the keyboard and input box. Now I can't see what time the email was sent, or if Bob was Cc'd or Bcc'd because all I can see is what I'm typing.

Winter is here, and with a virtual keyboard you get to choose between wearing gloves so thin they're worthless, or not wearing gloves at all if you want to type anything.

Onscreen keyboards need a heck of a lot more research and development before they'll replace physical keyboards altogether. Device screens need to be at least 25% bigger so that the virtual keys can be bigger and so that at least some of the screen is still visible in landscape. But that kind of size increase isn't likely with so many people wanting small phones. So, that being the case, there will always be people who prefer a real keyboard, and so they'll keep making them. Supply and demand.

Android is still under construction, so you may have good reasons to leave it until it becomes more complete or forever. But moving on a Samsung phone? That lowers the value of your post. Sorry. I had one, 5 times in reparing, until I gave up with it. Very poor quality.

I have to say most of what I read about being disappointed here is related to unreal expectations of a phone. First off if you grew up with cell then your in a different thought process. However if you grew up sharing a home line with your neighbors and realize what these phones can do its amazing. After testing the droid Vs Iphone, Att vs Verizon I can tell you they have shortcomings. You have to find what works for you. The DROID does everything but wipe your butt and plan your meals if you make it work. The Iphone will always have its draw backs as well. Even if it comes to Verizon network since they got neutered when they bought Alltel and lost some abilities it may be no different than ATT network. The phones are toys for most. What business runs on a droid? Blackberry has the market and apps for that.
Enjoy the fact you can afford such luxuries.

This is the part I find most interesting. Are we to understand that it took you 2 1/2 years to decide that AT&T didn't fit your needs? Sounds like you are incapable of determining whether or not the Eris is adequate in such a limited time frame...

Here is a fun fact;

iPhone OSS is on it's 3rd version (3.0). It took them 3 versions to include copy/paste, and an [unhacked] video camera, and MMS options.

Android is only on 1.5/1.6/2.0.

So, even while being a whole version behind, Android is still slowly stealing iPhone users away. As of now, iPhone is still superior imho. However, Apple is seriously going to need to step it up if they hope to compete with android, because by the time Android is on even 2.5, I have a hunch it will be running circles around iPhone 3.0.

And this comes from an Apple employee :p

I agree. I'm not the biggest fan of on-screen keyboards. That's why I'm reluctant to buy a Samsung Galaxy, even though the Milestone/Droid won't be available in Canada until next year and I'm stuck with a LG Rumor 2 right now. :(

Haha and my first post has to be this one... really. I just xfer'd from WinMo, and I have to say, I liked WinMo, due to full, and I mean FULL customization, but for the average user WinMo is not great. Android however, works great OUT OF THE BOX. I love it! and it retains customization that I yearn for. I just picked up the Samsung Moment and I LOVE IT!

OK, guys. No need to feed the flame. He's obviously unhappy with it for whatever reason. Everyone has a right to their opinion. And if the OP did, in fact, just post this to get a reaction out of you, he wins. Let's just leave him to enjoy (or not enjoy) his new device.
im wondering.. didnt anyone read this post? lmao. oh well happy winter :D

I had an HTC Droid Eris and was very disappointed for two reasons:
1) THE worst battery life of any phone I ever had. I could not get more that 9 hours, even with bluetooth and wifi off. HTC has needs to fix the battery life problem before anyone should buy this phone.
2) while I originally thought the smaller size to be an advantage, it soon became evident that the smaller screen and accompanying smaller soft keys made it impossible to type without constant backspacing and correction.
.:(

People do have a right to their opinion, but that doesn't mean I have to agree.

I love my Hero, and I would never go back to any non-android phone. There are different strokes for different folks so if the Iphone is your thing so be it. I just think Android is the future, and it is only getting better with time. The Iphone took a while to get to this point and no doubt will also improve, but any further improvements will be accomplished by trying to imitate Android OS functions. Just my 0.02 :D
