Help Looking at getting the X10, but have questions

I am in the market for an Android phone with AT&T. So far it's between this phone and the HTC Aria. I like this phones camera, and screen size, and the specs.

My questions are:
Has 2.x been released yet? I noticed several sites mentioning it was supposed to be out in Q2 2010, it's almost Q4.

What are the most common issues for this phone? I'm talking about common problems, not "well my cousin's friend had it freeze a lot... but then again he was an idiot who thought he knew what he was doing and fragged it up."

Would you recommend the phone?

Is there an Android phone on say T-Mobile that I get (for less the $400) that can be easily unlocked and used on At&T?

Thanks for any and all answers!

Nope, 2.x is not out yet, but SE has a power rangers promise that it'll be out soon...

I would recommend the phone, but it's not without its issues.

- Current firmware has a bug which drops Wifi every time you lose phone signal, which is only an issue if you live out in the sticks.
- Lags alot, but easy to fix if you remember to turn it off each night beore you charge it.

Other than that I can't really fault it, the build quality is great, the battery life is really good when you give it a few good charges :)

Can't believe 2.x isn't out yet. How does 1.6 stand-up to some of the nice apps in the market?

So basically I just need to remember to power-cycle my phone once a day, not a big deal.

I was just reading a post by a guy saying that he has an issue when making calls that his recipient can hear high-pitched static when he calls them. Is this common in the States? He is from India.

There appears to be the odd glitchy phone out there but a lot of the problems to me are about taking the phone back for replacement.

I have no real lag issues but the one thing about any Android phone is to think of it as a pc not a phone! If you left your pc on for days it would become slow and laggy so you would shut it down and restart it the same goes for android phones.

2.1 is billed to be out in september with 2.2 at the end of the year or early next year. There are a few apps that I'm looking forwards to getting like Dolphin browser HD and well I dont know what others as my girlfriend wont let me anywhere near her Galaxy as she thinks I'm going to root it lol so I dont really know what new apps I can get when it upgrades to 2.1

I have read your post Daniel so I familiar with your opinion of the phone. All I have to say is I agree with you but also disagree. I have seen your very same problems on nearly every 1stGen smartphone to come out. the iPhone 2g had a ton of bugs. See where you missed the point of what a lot of people told you is that 1st gens of EVERY product will have bugs connected to them. It's just a fact of life, alpha and beta testing hardware can only do so much for bug detection, it isn't until later on when the public has it in it's grubby paws that the product is truly tested and the manufacturer can actually see what is really going on with the product. When Plasma TV's (one of your examples) was first introduced to the market there were a metric TON of problems, I know because I sold them and saw the havoc they reaped with their issues, same for laptops, when they were first released they had a TON of problems. Basically these issues you have are mostly in the same category as most 1st gen products.

The reason I am mostly discounting your issues is the fact that I have seen next to no duplicate posts with a lot of the same problems. Meaning, to me, that the cause of your issues are caused by you, or you got a faulty handset.

But that's just what I see.

I couldn't agree more with that. Any other issue I have come across other than the ones I have listed, or the ones simply down to someone having one of the small volume of faulty handsets has been solveable through deleting apps (for example an issue where the phone would charge to 100% then just drop between 4 and 6% of its charge when unplugged was actually caused by a battery widget).

Kerbion - I would recommend you NOT to get an X10. Google "X10 low volume" and see the hundreds of people who are disappointed with the phone's volume. Basically the phone is great at everything other than being a phone.

Avoid like the plague.

Thanks for the tip, however I use a headset, or earbud to talk on the phone anyway, but just out of fairness, you get the same type of results when you google iPhone low volume, and Galaxy S.

So while that does concern me, I was wondering if anyone else here has this issue?

If you don't recommend this phone, is there another one around the same price that i could use on AT&T's network that is recommended?

The phone is by far the lowest call volumephone i've ever used, but unless your hearing isn't too great, it's really not a problem. I have spoken on the phone whilst in busy shopping centres and on campus at uni, both pretty loud background noise and it wasn't a problem.

Yup, same here. Although this is only second cell phone I've owned (though I've done my research and have used many other kinds of phones), my first being a SE W580i and that had rather good in-call volume. Though I figured out that the way I was holding the phone (X10) was both uncomfortable to me and was making the other person nearly inaudible. I have since discovered the 'sweet spot' and hearing people is no longer a problem even in crowds and loud backgrounds. Actually, I had to turn the phone's in-call volume down as it was starting to hurt my ears (still quieter than the W580i but not a problem :D ).

Other than that, I've encountered very few problems with the phone. Rogers has only released one of the many updates available for the phone but that is no fault of the phone itself. I've encountered the odd FC but it hasn't happened more than 5 or so times. Sometimes the Bluetooth will pair with things like my laptop or my W580i but not connect but it has never had a problem connecting to headsets. So yeah, I've had the phone since the middle of May and I have no real complaints about it. Love this phone.

hmm? so lets see....you start a thread...are looking at this phone..you claim to want to know common problems...and when the poster daniel only partially tongue in cheek...says how long you got?

you proceed to totally dismiss his problems as just his (not true..i have experienced the same plus many more...and all it takes is just a few seconds on the net doing searches to see how far reaching issues like lag, forced close shut downs etc etc etc happen on the x10).

basically with your long speech about how bad 1st gens are from all oem's and how expected they are ...i kind of wonder now why you bothered to even post looking for common problems and feedback?
You yourself dont want to hear them from daniel, me or for that matter...anyone on the net...god knows all first and second gens suck...crash all the time..have horrible battery life...have a tiny earpiece that is almost impossible to hear thru...have a wifi connection that days repeatedly if you lose signal..etc etc.
just buy it ...or dont buy it...doesnt matter..they all have problems...............................right:rolleyes:

Hey i am a new Xperia User and will be probably returning for a Captivate or Iphone 4
within the 30 days worry free guarantee

it is a great phone and I am in love with the UI and Camera but there is a difference between our Xperia and the Xperia from overseas

Overseas they are able to add 3rd party apps to further customize and better their phones....We as At & t customers lose this option and therefore it cripples the phone of a strong capability

had i had this option and I will definitely be willing to keep it. Changing out the keyboard and adding other things that made my other phones better

it is a hard decision because even without the phone having that capability it is such a great device...I'd rate it a B-

Lacking 2.x is a bit underwhelming, especially being at 2.2 but at the same time it isn't a horrible experience at the same time as some people make it out to be

I'd recommend the Xperia over the aria but i'd suggest you look at the captivate as well

Your problem you relate to when you compare the phones State side vs. overseas is not just an X10 issue, it is an AT&T issue. So no matter what phone you get under the AT&T carrier, there will be no sideloading if your phone is unrooted. So returning the phone to get an iPhone so you can get 3rd party apps is a NO GO! Just an FYI..

That is true about the At & t thing

oh and trust me...
I had a momentary lapse of judgement...
I will not be buying an iphone haha

I think you need to calm down a bit. He asked for opinions not a directive. I feel the same way about the Captivate as you seem to feel about the X10. That would not stop me from recommending it to someone, I would just let them know about my experience. One great benefit of AT&T is being able to test drive a device for 30 days. I returned my Captivate on day 28 because it was just too buggy for me. The bugs may get fixed and if they do I may end up with one again (I doubt it though).

For me, the X10 is light years better than the Captivate for my uses. I have not had to pull the battery or awoken to a powered off phone yet. The Captivate was a different story.

As much as I dislike the iPhone I will still recommend it to some individuals.

Sideloading on a stock AT&T Android phone is also very possible and not difficult. It's just a matter of having the right drivers loaded so ADB can see it.

I prefer debranding and loading a generic ROM so all restrictions are gone!

yes i was a bit harsh..but he said daniels issues were only his own as i stood by with many similar comments..and i also see quite a few on the net as i search for solutions to mine.
but mostly i found it aggravating that he asked if there were issues..then dismissed daniels comments and spent a whole paragraph on how all 1st gen electronics have bugs and problems and are to be expected etc.
To me..that is hogwash.
this is a very expensive electronic item and to in any way say it should be expected to experience forced shut downs and glitchy programs and ..well...you have read my stuff...but i thought why post looking for input..then chalk all issues up to being acceptable as first gen.

it kind of got my back up... due to the exhausting effort i have put in for a two week or three old..purchase...that is so buggy....didnt mean to jump all over him..just thought..why ask for opinions then if you are going to dismiss them?

I didn't totally dismiss them, but I took his with a few grains of salt, because after reading his posts it came across to me that he didn't even give the device a fair shake. Now that I have had a few minutes with it and have seen first hand how bad this thing runs (granted I was using a display model but I did power-cycle the thing before I messed with it), I have decided that as of right now it is just not worth the $350 I would have to spend to get it. I mean I just wanted to check the software version, and just getting into settings was like I was over loading the thing.

So until they release the X11 (IF they release it) I will have an Aria, Well that is until my contract is up and I can go to Verizon where the selection is much better.

Just an FYI, a powercycle on an Android phone takes longer than just the time it takes for the homescreen to appear. I wouldn't try to benchmark performance on an Android phone for at least 2-3 minutes after the homescreen appears.

I can tell you with 100% certainty that the Aria is slower than the X10. Who knows what was going on with that display model. The corporate store I go to most often has three different X10 displays. They also have three Captivate displays. To me, those are the only two worthwhile choices at AT&T right now.

I loved the phone after playing with a display model - I had a Magic that even an iPhone user said was fast, and the X10 was better! I bought it without contract.

My own unit has been every bit as good as the demo. I did have to upgrade to 020 firmware to get battery life to go from 10 hrs to over 20 hrs.

But I do think there is something weird about how some people have great experiences with this phone, and others have really poor experiences. Almost sounds like two different phones!

It's all about perspective.........
