Got Hero Lag? Try this...

My hero started out great. Slick and fast. Then it started to slow down. Switching screens or loading something new could take a few seconds. Sometimes I couldn't answer a call, it was like it was frozen up. My wife's moment seemed 5x faster.

I read in this thread (about midway down) that Jonnythan said after he removed Shopsavvy and a couple others things really sped up.

I tried it and WOW, a huge difference! The hero is back to normal for me. If you're having lag issues and have shopsavvy installed, I'd try an uninstall and see what happens. If anyone does narrow it down to other apps, would you kindly reply to we can let one of the developers know something is up with their program and the hero?

You make a great point. This phone is snappy and fast out of the box. I know people just to blame the phone for this so called lag, when in fact if the phone is slowing down it is becaue of applications. I have read threads where people have loaded 30 + apps on there phone. Try loading that many apps on any PC loaded with Windows or Linux and the results will be similiar.

I'm curious... I know many people aren't rebooting their phones or doing battery pulls... Not saying those in this thread aren't, but many aren't. Why? This is a little PC in the palm of your hand. REBOOT IT! I install and uninstall apps all the time and I don't have serious lag issues.

Or, maybe I just have lower expectations of the device. It's all relative, I suppose.

Totally agree, I personally never have problems with this phone. I reboot each night before I charge.

If the applications are just installed then they are just using storage it's not going to make any difference (well at least for Linux, Windows situation is a bit different with the registry). It's not until an application is ran that it will start using RAM, running lots of applications at once can cause problems, but Android does a pretty decent job of handling memory.

It's when you start adding widgets that get forecasts, sports scores, tweets, facebook posts and so on that you are going to run into problems. Background services like locale and others all eat memory too.

I also on a side note, since I did my fresh install of Ubuntu 9.10 I've probably cycled through at least 300 different packages, and a whole lot more then 30 left installed. It's just as snappy as day one.

I power down and charge when I go to sleep each night. Then I let it boot up while I'm in the shower in the morning. Seems to me that the phone is snappier if you let it completely boot up -- i.e., let it get through all the "loading" messages -- before trying to use it. It's not like I'm going to need the phone in the shower anyway. ;)

Yep, couldn't agree more. It takes some getting used too, but years ahead of my last phone WinMo. That would just totally lock-up, freeze, loose everything, etc., anyway...

If you install an app and notice any unwanted change to the phone, then dump it. There certainly have been a few I installed and subsequently removed.

I don't think any one app or another makes a big difference though and I'm close to 30 myself with no issues. Just don't load 30 apps at one sitting and then go "wtf"? Also, try going in an cleaning out the caches of programs, simple maintenance goes a long way... there's many posts here that are helpful to performance if you are having those issues.

I set up a scene with loads of widgets just to see what effect it had on battery life, lag, performance, etc., and there was some but nothing worth noting. The battery life was noticeable though... hehe, but that's to be expected.

Regards

-clear your browser cache
-clear your browser history
-backup sms messages so you can delete threads periodically
-On the G1 -- keep at least 25-30mb of memory free. Dipping below 25mb free I start to see lag very often.

I have no more than 2 widgets per screen, and I don't have a home replacement -- Just a waste of space, and since the normal home application is still installed AND running regardless, you've now got another app running in the background.

--Peroidically going to menu>settings>applications>manage applications and doing the following.

-Sort by size
-Start at the top tapping on apps
-If available tap the "clear cache" button
-For SOME apps (BE CAREFUL) using the "Clear Data" button can be helpful. But be very very careful, clearing data may remove login information, settings, playlists, or other important things that you don't want to have to re-enter again.

Things like facebook, the browser, maps, weatherbug, BuddyMob, tend to cache content and this can eat up memory. The Marketplace app is THE biggest culprit, especially if you spend a lot of time window shopping through the market.

Doing all this stuff I can EASILY get back about 5-12mb of phone memory.

i just constantly monitor the apps running on my phone. i use three different task managers because they all seem to give me different reports. some find things running in the background the others don't. any who . . . the three i use are:

-- TasKiller (full)
-- Advanced Task Manager (full)
-- TaskControl

i am pretty certain i have tried all the task managers in the market rated three stars+ and these are the only three i kept. all the others i found lacking and out of the three i have now they seem to cover all bases. actually, you may be able to just stick with Advance Task Manager and TaskControl just fine. Advanced Task Manager has a widget to kill tasks that works better than the TasKiller widget.

I did this and Internal Storage went from 92mb to 105mb!

Nice...At least its a good way to keep everything as clean as possible.

Props

I gained back over 20 megs!

I use a program called "Close everything" it isn't the most beautiful, feature laden task killer out there but. It works flawlessly! It happened to be the first one I downloaded and have had ZERO problems with it.

The most annoying lag occurs when I type online. Text messages are ok, Im just now getting the hang of it. But when Im trying to reply online, for example if I were on my hero now trying to type all this, it lags like there's no tomorrow and its so annoying. I can somewhat tolerate it, but at the same time it would be nice to get rid of it somehow. Anybody know what I'm talking about? I know when I first got it, it wasnt like that. But I didnt have as much on it. I did the steps above, and its a little bit better, but its still not as smooth as I would want it.

Really useful. My phone feels quite snappy again. Let's see how it does over the next few days.

Thanks for posting.

For me, the biggest lag creators are the People app and the Browser app. If you get an alert that you missed a call and you check the aler, it loads People to show the missed call list; at that point I have serious lag until I go into Task Manager and kill People, then things are snappy again. For the Browser, I've found that the more complicated the last page you viewed was, the worse the lag is, so I created a bookmark pointing to to about:blank (I use that as my home page too) and always navigate to that bookmark before I go back to the home screen. If I forget to do that, the phone lags and I have to go to Task Manager to kill the browser.

But the People app is the worst. It's a shame that to have a decent phone we have to resort to killing People.
