To type on this thing, and as a result I went waaaay over my 250 texts limits this month. On my previous dumb phone, where typing involved hitting numbers to get letters, I rarely went over 100 texts. This month, on the X? Over 500! ROFL!! Thank goodness VZW has such an awesome website, was able to go online and upgrade my account to 5000 texts (hey, you never know...) and make it retroactive to the first of the month. Nice.

I love my phone.

Is there any way to make it so that Google Voice uses your normal phone number? I don't feel like trying to text people and every single time have the reply come back with "who is this?"

No, when you sign up you have to choose a number not currently in use. If you were able to do that then it wouldn't be able to decide if the data/voice wanted to go through GV or Big Red.

It does take a period of adjustment for people to get use to your new "google" phone number. The good news is that it is literally the last time you will ever have to change numbers. From that point forward, you can have the same phone number regardless of where you live or what service provider you have. Because google voice will forward all the phone calls/text messages that come into your google voice number to your current phone (it could be mobile, work, or home phones or all of them).

I made a total switch to GV when I got my Android phone. Placing phone calls using your GV number is super easy with Android. Plus, you only have that one number so when your contacts update to your new GV number they can both call and text it like a regular phone. They won't know the difference.

Plus with this recent announcement, switching to GV is a great idea. You can now save tons of minutes. Eventually I am hoping this makes it into the Android app so you can place calls over 3G. For the time being using your GV # from your computer will be great!

Ummm, I think you get that now anyway? Have had the same number since mid-eighties, not looking to get a new one at all, in spite of the fact that I've moved and am not even in the same area any longer. Absolutely no need to change it.

Sorry, but Google Voice sounds like a giant PITA. And the upgrade was only a net increase of $15 (already paying $5 for the 250) - I spend more than that at lunch each day. Think I'll just stick with what works, and what all my friends and family know. Definitely doesn't seem worth the hassle.

Might work well for others, though. YMMV.

Yeah, the whole thing with GV is, though, that you're not tied to a single phone or provider and there's no process to porting your number. Work phones, home phones, staying with a friend, whatever. Plus the rules based forwarding is pretty cool.

If you're the kind of person that only ever carries a cell phone, then it's not much value. But I have 3 phones so it's nice for that, and I use the rules heavily. Work calls only get routed to my cell phone until certain times, after that they go straight to voicemail. Family gets routed to all of my phones in case I'm out of reception or something. The obnoxious guy who I worked with once upon a time but who still called me regularly gets dumped straight into a black hole. Stuff like that.

The problem with using Google Voice exclusively for phone and texts is that in-network calls from Verizon customers don't count as in network if they call your google voice number. Most of the people I talk to are also Verizon customers, so I rely on the unlimited in-network minutes. I feel stupid giving people my "text-only number" and my "phone calling number." So, I just use google voice to text the four or so people that I text the most, and they know who it's from, and then have just 250 texts from my actual phone number otherwise. If I need to I simply append a "-My Name" to the end of text messages from gvoice so people know who I am.
