Mixed Upgrades Dates

When my wife went into the local Verizon store to order a Motorola X (as an added line), I asked when I could upgrade from my Eris to an X as well. (I got the Eris in November 2009, and I am the primary line.)

The representative said that I would have to wait until November, but when I spoke to a CSR over the phone about trying to move the date up a month or two, I was told that I would have to wait until July 2011, which I was told in the local store is my NE2 date.

Has this happened to anyone else? Of course, I'm going to go back to the local office in November to upgrade, if not before then.

The store is correct, the csr is wrong. Every primary line is able to upgrade at 20 months to be eligible for the NE2, and at 12 months for 2 year pricing, if they originally signed up for a 2 year contract. If they signed up for a 1 year contract, they can upgrade at 10 months for 2 year pricing. If they opt again for 1 year pricing the cost will be a little higher than 2 year pricing, but you then have the ability to upgrade after 10 months.

I called into ask about 1 year contracts and they said I could only upgrade after 12 months , but on their site it says you can upgrade after 10 months. It'd really be helpful if they knew the terms of their own contracts. Also, for people looking at the Droid X and Droid 2, they were offering to upgrade people early. I know this because a friend of mine was able to upgrade on his plan and got an X on launch day, and he had a Droid 1 (got it in November, same as you).

I would call and ask for a supervisor if they try that again. Also, I would try and find the part about annual upgrades and upgrades for 1 year contracts so you can debunk any bulls**t they may try to throw at you. Here is a link to the info on their site.

For annual upgrade:

http://aboutus.vzw.com/customersatisfaction/customerexp.html

In the section titled My Verizon and the My Verizon Advantage, the second point states:

"You can get a new phone every year with Annual Upgrade. Sign up for a 2-year agreement on a calling plan of at least $49.99 and you can purchase a new phone at its promotional price through My Verizon every year with a 2-year renewal (upgrade fee may apply)."

For 1 & 2 year contract upgrades (not using an annual upgrade):

Device Replacement Program

It states at about 2/3 of the way down the page
"You may upgrade to a new device:
If you have a 1-year contract, you may be eligible for an upgrade in month 10.
If you have a 2-year contract, you may be eligible for an upgrade in month 20."

If you can tell them where it is on their own site, they will have no choice but to honor it. Read both pages fully. There are some loopholes whereas they can deny you the upgrade if your account is not in good standing (you owe them money), or they let you upgrade already (if you had a bad device they no longer had in stock and allowed you to upgrade to a different phone). Hope that helps.

Is this only for multi-line accounts? I always thought I had to wait out the full 2 years for my upgrade (individual account)...

It applies to both. An indivdual plan and the primary line of a shareplan share the same benefits and resonsibilites/penalties.

Individual lines (and the primary line of a share plan) upgrades:

On a 2 year contract
At 12 months with 2 year pricing
At 20 months with 2 year pricing plus a NE2 discount
(Contract extends 24 months from the date of the upgrade. Upgrade dates are as mentioned above from the date of upgrade. Cannot switch to a 1 year contract until the current contract is up.)

On a 1 year contract
At 10 months with 1 year pricing ($35 -$75 higher than 2 year pricing)
(Contract extends 12 months from the date of the upgrade. Upgrade date is 10 months from the date of the upgrade. Can also switch to a 2 year contract at time of upgrade.)

Added line upgrades:
At 24 months with 2 year pricing
(Contract extend 24 months for the date of the upgrade.)

The only way to upgrade an added line earlier than 24 months is to upgrade the primary line, if they are eligible, and move the upgraded phone to the added line. Doing so pushes back the upgrade date for the primary line the same as if they had upgraded for themselves.

Hope that helps.:)
