Ok... so I posted in 2 different threads about this issue and nobody has any idea what I was talking about... on the camera in OS 2.1 the camera is permenantly zoomed in... if you want to take a picture you have to litterally back up a few steps.... 2.2 froyo has fixed this issue but ONLY for the camera... not the video... for example I took a picture in camera mode, of a glass that took up the whole screen and just fit in the picture... i then switched to video camera mode and didn't change anything else and the video then expanded across the whole screen and was zoomed in and only half the glass could be captured!!! I just want to point this out and any of you guys can feel free to give it a try... just wanted you all to know i'm not crazy! and this is not a hardware issue like i initially though this is simply a software issue... and when the camera is stretched across the screen this causes it to be permenantly zoomed ... so i'm happy 2.2 fixed this for the camera mode but disapointed it's still in the video recording... but it proves my point... now i'm going to try to upload my examples...

It's YOUR phone doing it. My camera comes up zoomed out................ every time. What about that don't you understand?
It seems your trying to imply we don't know our phones come up zoomed in............when they don't.
I don't think anyone doubted yours comes(came) up zoomed in.
Or am I missing something here?

yes, you are missing something here... and so is everybody else i've explained this to... in 2.1 the camera does NOT come up zoomed... the camera loads completely zoomed out, you cannot zoom out any further.. BUT, and a BIG BUT... even when completely zoomed out the camera enlarges the photo automatically, so in order to capture a photo in 2.1 you have to take a step back away from what you want to capture in order to fit it in the picture...

In 2.2 this is fixed for the camera NOT the video... so for anyone with 2.2 that wants to back me up and test this out do the following:

-take a picture of something and make it so it barely fits within the camera...
-now don't move or change your distance from this object, simply switch to video record mode and take a short video of the same object... the object will no longer fit on your screen.

.....

I just did exactly what you said and mine is working fine, it has to be something with your phone. Everything was the same size.

upload your results and i'll further explain.

perhaps other people can chime in to explain it differently/better than I can?

i don't know of any other way to explain it... my picture shows it's faily obvious... the zoom, cuts off alot of the picture

I just tried it again (without moving the camera and having it pointed at my monitor) and the video and picture have the same exact size and border.

please upload your results as well as your camera/video settings as well as the OS you are currently running....

can you atleast see now what I am trying to explain?

we ran into a similar issue at work with our chase iphone application, when taking pictures to deposit a check, i believe this is why i noticed this zoom thing... but if everyone else is saying this isn't an issue I just find it hard to believe that I would have 2 defected devices and when upgrading to froyo it fixed the camera zoom problem...

My pictures come out(saved to the phone) EXACTLY as they are in the 'viewfinder'(screen). Nothing is cut after picture is saved. Nothing is zoomed. Nothing is cropped. Nothing is different.

Now, if you are saying after you bring it into a computer it is now different somehow, then the app is messing with your picture.

My pictures seem to be the same on a computer screen(from what I remember) although I haven't done much with bringing the photos into a computer.

I believe YOUR'S is doing it though. If it's a problem to you, send the phone back.

-no the view finder screen and the save is not the issue
-and no bringing it into the computer is not the issue...

but I appreciate your help

thank you AIRMAX33... that is exactly what I wanted... now please tell me what OS you are running and what are the "stock" settings actually set at... I wanted the best quality so I changed my stock settings to the highest quality...

-If you are running 2.1 then that camera is zoomed for both the camera and the video so your picture would prove that
-Since I am running 2.2 my camera issue as shown in my previous picture the zoom issue has been fixed and my video has not been which my picture above has proved

the prob is that when you set your pics into 6mp widescreen, it should take up the whole phone display, but all it essentially doing is taking an 8mp photo and then cropping the top and bottom. during the display it "zooms" by cropping out the top and bottom so that you don't have those bars on either side. You're not crazy, i tried relatively the same experiment and its true. when you take pics in 6 mp widescreen it looks "zoomed in" because the phone is taking a 8mp photo, zooming in and cropping!

sorry i said the same thing three times, but i just wanted to clear up this whole mess

They are both wide screen, no border.

cool, thanks... and can you do me one last favor, change your camera settings real quick to 8mp just to confirm that is it still widescreen display...

Here are my findings so far:

for settings camera 8mp and video at HD

in 2.1:
-camera and video picture both enlarged (permenantly zoomed) and display is widescreen

in 2.2 (same identical settings):
-camera not elarged or zoomed and displays with a border (no widescreen)
-video displays widescreen and is enlarged

Here's my thinking.... if the camera/video both widescreen then they will both display same picture... however if one has a border and the other does not, the one with the border with be correctly displaying while the one without a border will display the same picture but enlarged/zoomed

Can other people please test this both with 2.1 and 2.2 for more results, please and thank you!

No i get that in 2.1 there's a 6mp and a 8mp selection... my point is that when I have 2.1 on 8mp there was a enlarge/zoom issue and on 2.2 there is not this issue same settings... my 2.1 was widerscreen on 8mp and my 2.2 has a border!!

if it counts for anything i tried this and can verify the same issue at hand.

2.1
camera = 8mp
video = 720p

i couldnt replicate the issue at first, but then i used these instructions:

-take a picture of something and make it so it barely fits within the camera...
-now don't move or change your distance from this object, simply switch to video record mode and take a short video of the same object... the object will no longer fit on your screen.

and duplicated the issue.

I took a pic of my display so that it just fits, then switched to video. took about a 5 sec. video. went to the Gallery and sure enough the pic was fine and the video was cropped on the top and bottom. it cropped out about and 1 inch, top/bottom.

if it is fixed in 2.2 then its not too big of an issue for me.
