I've always thought that Android should give you more control over how long Wifi and 3G stay connected after you turn the screen off. Sometimes its nice to keep them on while downloading something, but it bugs me when Spare Parts tells me that my Wifi is on for hours longer than my screen is.

DataOff is an app that gives you more control over the delay before Wifi (3G coming soon) turn off when the screen goes off and come back on when the screen turns on. The source code is available here so developers send me an email and I'd be happy to make you a member of the project.

For the less developer-savvy, I've posted the latest .apk, leave me some feedback/love/hate.

So if I am reading this correctly it does not work with 3g at the moment. Does it work with CDMA(HTC EVO) I tried it and it did not shut down wifi

CDMA and 3g are two entirely different animals. 3g can be used by both GSM and CDMA.

What I do not understand is that 3g is on all of the time if it is offered by the provider... Why would you ever want to disable it? 3g, EV, or whatever your provider uses will not consume any more battery life than another, so why disable 3g at all? The wi-fi aspect could come in handy though.

I let you know its CDMA because I notice that some of these programs like this do not work on CDMA. I want to shut off 3g because it is a battery hog and would only like it to actually turn off if a process needs it like mail, internet, market, etc... but if I could get it to cut off when screen goes black it would be nice as well

But what I am getting at is if you turn off 3G, how do you expect people to get Emails, SMS, MMS, or even phone calls? 3G is a form of cell phone service. if you turn it off, they will not have service.

The point here is to have 3g turned off when is not being used (when screen is off) and have it on when you are actually using it (streaming, browsing, checking email etc)... and 3g here only refers to data, so you will be able to receive calls and sms even if it is off. This is all about saving battery, and 3g on all the time consumes a lot of power
