24 hour time lapse

I recently moved up from an original env to the X. Before heading out east for grad school I decided it would be an interesting experiment to try taking a time lapse of the drive itself - three days and 1400ish miles. At some point I'll edit them all together/prettify them, but I thought you guys might like to see the raw footage - all 5 minutes worth.

The quality is great (make sure to watch in HD), and the X did just fine managing that + calls + podcasts + navigation. It really has become the only device I carry with me...

Has anyone else tried any other types of time lapse shots? It can be a pain, not being able to move your phone for the duration, but is definitely worth it.

You got me. I originally wanted to do a legitimate time lapse, but then I realized that if I just drove as fast as an ICBM I could get the same effect by just filming it. SOOOO much simpler.

Thanks! If you guys have any ideas for other shots, I'd be up for trying them. Not that we can pull off anything like BBC's Life (see vid below), but I think we could get some excellent shots without expensive equipment. However, I've already rejected the time-lapse while someone sleeps idea. I'd rather not end up in a Paranormal Activityesque film, thank you very much...

Which app did you use for the time lapse?

It's called Time-Lapse by Sheado.net. It lets you set how often it will capture a frame, fps, and the quality of the images.

Only downside is that it will end the current capture whenever you switch apps. I talked with the developers and they indicated that allowing the capture to continue in the background was somewhere on the to-do list, but not a priority. Granted, most of the time switching to another app means you're done. However, while driving I would take a call, switch back to Time-Lapse, and then start up another capture. I could then end the call from the drawer, and thus, didn't have to leave the app.

I used 1 frame/5 seconds, and then compressed that to 30 frames/second at 1600x1200.

Each day took about 3gb. In the evenings I would transfer over that day's files to my computer so I never got close to filling up my sd card's capacity. You have to remember, at 1 frame/5 seconds compressed to 30fps you're only managing 1 second of footage for every 2.5 minutes of driving. Over 24 hours of driving that's not even 10 minutes of footage.

That was really cool. You inspired me to play around with the "fast-motion" feature on the X. I recorded this on my way home from work driving down the North part of the Las Vegas Strip. My wife called in the middle and I stopped at a gas station, so I used iMovie to edit the three parts together. Then, I sped it up a little bit more to cut down the time. The X also has a slow motion mode. Can't wait to see what else we can do... [eta: it's also in HD if you want to view that version]

Anyone having problems playing there videos on there computer? I have a Mac and Quicktime won't play it at all and VLC starts playing it for a few seconds and then just stops. It plays fine on the phone though.

A few months ago I had the same problem playing Youtube videos on my Mac. I think YT updated some code on their website and now it's incompatible with older versions of Safari. I downloaded Chrome and the videos play fine now.

Yeah, I had the same issue on Windows. Convert the files to .avi or whatever your format of choice is with your video converter of choice. Everything should be fine once you do that.
