WiFi phone calls?

Question:
My wife and I both have an Evo 4g. We live in the US. She will be traveling Europe for three months and I would like for her to be able to call me free through WiFi access. What app would be best for this situation?

Something that is most like a normal phone call would be ideal. Also I would much rather be able to receive calls without running a special app. Simple and easy is important.

I'm not quite sure, but my daughter is in the Coast Guard and i am ALWAYS looking for Wi-fi means for us communicating. I think the BEST way we have discovered is putting your phone in "airplane mode" and if you have facebook, download IMO.IM from the market, which is a Facebook chat app., and using that. It's free and uses WiFi to work.
There are some people who are able to TALK using different internet phone methods, but when we tried them, they just plain didn't work for us. Daughter has DInc and I have DX.
If you find any other means to do this---PLEASE SHARE! : )
Skype that's installed on our phones doesn't work either because of the 3G thing. I'm still trying to figure out why it's even on our phones to begin with!

Wouldn't Skype work?

Skype only works over 3G not wifi for some reason.

Make sure both of you have a facebook account, then download the vonage mobile app. It works to make calls to any smartphone with the app installed over wifi. The app just syncs with your facebook accounts and friends on there, so you both need facebook and the app. But I have tested it and it works great over wifi, and it will work on 3G also incase you need it to on one end.

The Vonage for facebook app works like a normal phone for receiving calls. To place calls you just open the app and pick the friend that you want to call. Look at my post above for a link.

So I tried the Vonage app and it works well. I was a little disappointed with the call quality but its not terrible. my other issue is that my battery life is already poor with the evo and if I keep Vonage open its a bit of a drain. this is the best solution so far...

any other suggestions?

That was my only complaint with Vonage also, I think that is just something you have to deal with because to be able to receive calls it has to be running.

One solution could be to log out of Vonage, IM each other via Google talk when you want to make a phone call, then turn Vonage on? Not a great solution, but a work around to having Vonage drain the battery so much.

Skype on Verizon isn't "normal" Skype, as Verizon actually uses a regular circuit-switched call between your phone and the cell-tower to make the Skype call (and not a regular TCP/IP connection like Skype usually uses). I have Skype on my GSM/UMTS Symbian phone, and can make calls over GSM, UMTS as well as wifi.
