Help Hotspot Froyo Custom Install Question

Hey everyone,

I am a new member here, just joined a few days ago.

I've had my HTC Incredible (Verizon) for about 2-3 weeks and so far I love it.

I've been reading these forums every day, multiple times a day ever since I joined here a few days ago, but haven't posted anything yet.

I remember the first day I joined here I saw a thread that was discussing a custom Froyo ROM that you could install on your phone that would NOT root your phone.
However, I also saw one that allowed free hotspot tethering, that didn't accrue any charges from Verizon Wireless, unless I am mistaken, but I beleive I did read that someone where on here.

I'm not looking for someone to walk me through how to install, or root the phone or anything like that, I understand all the inns and outs of doing that.....I provide PC technical support for a living, working on my B.S. degree in Computer Science, so I'm pretty fluent in the technical aspects of working the phone and rooting and all of that, I was just trying to have someone point me in the right direction to the Foryo update.zip/rom that you could install on your phone that would do the following two options:

1. I would prefer the version that doesn't root the phone, but instead just installs, if I have to end up rooting the phone that's fine, I would just prefer not to only because of possibly voiding the warranty, not because I'm afraid of screwing it up haha, I feel perfectly comfortable doing it if I must.
2. I read one of these allowed free hotspot tethering and also got rid of Verizon's bloatware as well, I don't know if all of these are found all in one custom rom, but if they are that would be great if you could point me in the direction where I can download it at.

I would prefer 2 over 1, so if I can get the features of 2, but still have to root the phone to do it, I will if need be.

I apologize if I didn't look hard enough in your forums to find it,
However, I did a forum search with the terms "froyo ruu hotspot" and other variations to see if I could find it and didn't have any luck, though I didn't have enough time to do a thorough search as I am currently at work and my time is limited here, typing this over my lunch break.

I appreciate any help anyone can be, glad to be here, seems like an awesome place. Thanks.

You can't install any custom rom without root. there is a RUU available that will update you 2.2 or you can wait for 2.2 OTA currently being distributed. These are both official signed Verizon offerings not custom. (NOTE: IF you update using either of these without rooting and running unrevoked forever to get "s-off" you WILL NOT be able to root your phone at this time, currently there is no root method for stock 2.2) 2. non-Verizon wifi tethering is ONLY available with a rooted phone.

It doesn't sound like you're trying to root or do any kinds of hacking to your phone just yet. If you look around the forums (sorry, I don't have a link right now but its out there) you will find the leaked RUU of the Android 2.2. You can install this, it wont root your phone and does not require a root. This is exactly what VZW is pushing out to all our phones over the next few weeks. You can install that or you can just wait for the update to to pop up on your phone. I believe I was probably the one talking about the free wifi, I will private message you the steps to getting free wifi hotspot but as you know, you wont actually have wifi hotspot until you get the 2.2 update. So I would wait until u get 2.2 to do the steps to get free hotspot.

Ok, so root the phone, then install/run unrevoked forever.

Is there a specific rom that you would reccommend to install that would contain Froyo and have the ability to hotspot tether for free?

Currently I am running 2.1 update 1

I am admittedly behind on this: but I don't believe there is a custom rom built off the latest FROYO just yet, which I would recommend waiting for if you are to go that route.

I would recommend going with the RUU to install the official 2.2:
http://shipped-roms.com/shipped/Inc...4k_NV_1.50_PRL58006_release_143351_signed.exe

If you have problems with errors, check out either:

or
http://androidforums.com/incredible...170-171-solution-windows-7-a.html#post1472468
depending on your OS.

Then just look into JuicyJones PM about the wifi tethering part.

No root needed, and you get your tethering just like you want:) No, it doesn't get rid of the bloatware, but that stuff doesn't really do anything besides take up a few megs of space. ( Unless of course you sign up with the CityID trial. Don't do that, lol )

Is it possible for me to get the steps for the WiFi tethering? I'm going to go the RUU route tomorrow and the tethering is what I'm looking forward to most.

Thanks!
