Help Quick couple questions about my new toy?

Hi everyone, and must say this is a nice forum you have got running. Anyways I have just got myself a Sony Ericsson X10 and it's my first Android phone. I have upgraded from a Samsung Omnia running WinMo 6.5 and I must say I'm enjoying Android so much more already

As I'm completely new to Android I have a few questions:

1, Installing Apps - The SE X10 only has 256MB internal memory and I have a 8GB memory card inside, I have noticed nearly everything I download installs to the internal memory. With my Omnia you can choose where to install it, is there a way to force it to install to the SD card or move it from the internal memory to the SD card?

2, Charging - For the first time ever I have never have come across a phone that fully turns it's self on from being fully turned off when a charger is plugged in and turned on. With any rechargeable device you need to give them a good charge (16+ hours) to give them a good life. But how can I do that as the battery is being used as its charging?

3, I've seen some stuff about rooting? I kinda understand it but what is the benefit of doing it? Is it risky? Is there any cons?

I hope someone can shed some light on this questions for me please?

Hi Luka, welcome to the X10 family!

On the apps front you can't save the app to the sd card currently. I understand that after 2.1 we will be able to. In fairness tho I have lots of apps on my phone and still plenty of memory left... 37 showing in my file manager which is an app in itself! You go a bit app happy in the first few weeks but once you settle down you get a feel for what you actually need and use.

On the charging, yes the phone stays on but if you aren't using it it goes into sleep mode and uses very little power and charges up to 100% and then stops charging. If it then drops below 95% it will start charging again. So basically the charge isn't running for the whole time (most users leave it on charge overnight) A few nights of this you will be up and running on full steam, the batteries are of a newer style and therefore apparently don't need the complete discharge/recharge of the older phones that we were used to.

On the rooting front I can't advise but suggest you look on this forum in the root section and also have a look over at XDA developers site, they have some really good info and guides on Rooting. Other than that I will leave it to my fellow posters to give you further info.

On 3. If you have to ask about rooting I dont think you should do it. I didnt and I have the official upgrade to look forward to. Rooting is like opening your christmas presents early.

(To SE: dont read that last part, if you wait with the upgrade to christmas I will #####ANDROIDFORUM-AUTOCENSORING##### you, and also cry a bit.)

BUT! when I joined about a month ago I didn't know anything about unlocking, debranding and rooting. But all three have tutorials here (or point to a tutorial) and it's easy to do and understand, and I did everything easily. Just make sure you understand and ask the right questions before doing anything though!

AH! This explains it. I have been trying to understand why my phone that charges all night often has between 94 and 98% charge but RARELY 100%. Another dumb feature of this phone.

Please tell me they will fix this crap... if nothing else to make me feel better.

Actually, the X10 has 384Mb of RAM - at present, only 256Mb are accessible due to a limitation on Android 1.6. Much like the screen's limited to 65K colors as opposed to the ream limit of 16M.

Also, don't confuse RAM with storage. The X10 comes with 1Gb of internal storage. That's where your programs are being installed. Again, installing apps in the internal memory are a limitation of the Android build, which should soon be gone. Still, 1Gb just for apps is not bad at all.

So you'd rather the charger keeps charging the battery, even when it doesn't need to and potentially burn it out?

Far from being a dumb feature, I think it's pretty smart.

It is not a dumb feature but done on purpose so the battery does not get over charged. Most today's phones have this, as did my last two phones the Treo Pro and the BB 9700
