So I finally got adobe flash 10.1 installed on my eris and the first thing I did was go to HULU. the flash does work, but at speeds that would take you back to the first internet dial-up days. I waited 8 minutes for the HULU video to load only to be reward with a frame by frame jerky motion that could cause epilepsy. But hey, at least my curiosity was satisfied.:D

Were you using a 3G or WiFi connection when you tried the Flash on Hulu? Would be interested if there was a difference with the two connections.

Obviously Wifi is quicker than 3G, so I'm sure using those makes a difference.

Regardless, I don't think flash would work great on our phones, the Eris just isn't ready to handle it.

I used to say on here the Eris couldn't handle Flash, before it was even confirmed it would be for Droid and above devices. People still thought the hacking community would make it work. I dunno how, seems impossible to change hardware specs on a phone and you can't dumb-down flash.

So, glad you got your curiosity out the way. But it probably won't work in the future either. Best just wait for your upgrade and enjoy it then.

I went to the local VZW store and played around with the D2 last week. I loaded nytimes.com in the browser and it took a full 60 seconds for the flash stuff to fully load. The video playback was smooth, but I could never get the pause control to work. So, even on a D2, flash takes a while to load.

I just gotta say this, when you install flash 10.1, its doesnt do anything. The browser doesnt recognize it. What your using is flash lite that comes with the stock eris browser.

Theres a really long complicated reason behind it, but just to simplify it, android 2.2 adds a sort of "key" in the script that asks for flash, and without that, it doesnt work, because the browser doesnt recognize it. Sense has a similar key, but it points to flash lite, not flash 10.1.

I would have expected that. Hulu even performs really poorly on my Dell Dimesion 2400, which has a 2.53 Ghz Celeron single core. Hulu (or flash video period) is not a particularly light task for weaker processors.

Wow. I have a five year old Inspiron B130 with a 1.2ghz Celeron (Intel's hobo-level CPU line) and I use Hulu with Easytether and now WiFi Tether a LOT and it works flawlessly very nearly every time.

Do you have a memory leak or something?

Nope. It generally had 300 MB free, but would still get choppy. That computer wasn't very good period. It had trouble playing full screen youtube videos. 128 KB of L2 cache made it perform worse than my Pentium III in some cases. I thought having 1 GB of RAM would help, but it didn't. Hell, browsing this website was a pain, and could get choppy. Ran Photoshop CS4 like a champ though, for some reason. Fortunately now, I got a Pentium 4 now and no more performance issues on stupid shit. And Winamp doesn't spike to 50% usage because I turned on the equalizer. Hooray.

It could partially be my GPU though, since its PCI, not AGP or PCIe.

Glad your new one works better. I've been lucky (and careful) with my Inspiron. I plan to keep it till the wheels fall off. It's held up much better than my Eris, which is distressingly close to obsolete.

I saw that Adobe has new requirements for Flash 10.1 and that an overclocked Eris seems to meet them for VGA devices.

Wonder if the Just In Time compiler would make a difference. I assume it works for all Java based programs.

Probably not I'm thinking. If your thinking about things like Hulu, I would forget it. The Eris pretty much relies on hardware decoding for the videos it can play. It just chokes on software decoding like in Flash. I guess our phones were just never destined for this purpose. Makes me sort of wish I invested in a Moto Droid when I had the chance, but oh well.

I can see what you mean about your PC. I would believe yours could run Flash fine. I had an old Compaq Ascentia, with a Pentium III and 64 MB of RAM. Took 10 minutes to start Firefox due to its absence of RAM, but it could play Youtube fairly well surprisingly.

@rubinscube - Do you remember where you got the Flash APK? I found one somewhere, it downloaded and tried to install by failed. Granted, I'm running non-stock rooted kaosfroyo 2.2, but it's also possible I tried someone else's incompatible port. Any tips???

dave922,

This thread over on XDA Flash 10.1 on hero, port? [UPDATED WITH DOWNLOAD] - xda-developers has the .apk, but the conversations in the thread indicate that it only works on Sense-based ROMs.

There is some discussion about trying to get it to work on Froyo ROMs, with mixed success...
