I Hate Phone List

what you're looking at isn't your contact list, its your recent call history. when you press "phone" on the bottom, this is what pops up, with your contact list below the call history. set a shortcut of "people" on your home screen, and that will have all your contacts in alphabetical order, and will never change. add to home screen, shortcut, program, people.

No I want it to work correctly, when I am in the phone app I want the phone directory, not this hokey thing they have created. I have using cel phones for about 15 years and this is the WORST phone app of all.

I am not sure what cell phones you are using, but every phone I have ever used has two separate features: address book and call list. And on every single phone, the one that comes up when you press send, or when you end a call, is the call history.

What phones did you have before?

Name me any phone that shows the call history when you press phone and takes the contact out of the alphabetic order and puts it at the top of the list in call history order.

You are correct, phones have TWO separate lists, phone directory and call history. When you press phone you get the phone directory unless you ask for the history.

About 6 different Motorolla phones some smart, some dumb, HTC Tilt, Blackberry, iPhone.

In all the above, when you press the phone button or touch screen you get your phone list directory.

Sorry, every single phone I have ever had, does this. My last, Blackberry Curve. Before that I had a bunch of Nextels...same thing.

It's not a "contact list" it's a call history. Maybe there's some setting to change it, don't know. But every phone I have owned for a LONG time when you press the green call button, you get call history, not the list of contacts.

You had me doubting myself, so I checked my wife's BB Curve (hers is Verizon, mine was AT&T). Sure enough, press of send button brings up call log.

they are just griping about the way the phone app is constructed, and I agree. i made a big long post about it here...

i have a eris, idk if you hav emore options with other droids but here is my idea....

when i hit the physical call button i have my call history page, the keyboard overlayed, left screen button for collapse keyboard, call button (to call last person in history), and favorites button on the right.

if i hit menu i can click settings for a very limited menu, not what i am looking for.

i hate to compare, but i was a BB'r for a long time, last phone was storm 1.

on that i had the option i could set that would say

when hit phone button present dial pad
or
when hit phone button present call history
or
when hit phone button present contacts

ALSO even if i did launch phone and had it preset to history i had 3 easy tabs on top to switch between the three

ALSO in history if i clicked a person entry (regardless if i called their mobile or work) it gave me a pop up and asked what number of theirs i wanted to call.

i flip flop between work and cell when calling my wife, on the eris if i click her in history it calls that number when i might want the other

did that make sense? i want more control over the phone app, the main app that makes a phone...well...a phone....ease of use and productivity are key here...

The screen works exactly as it is intended to. It is a call history as with most cell phone and any phone made by HTC, sorry but your Tilt was the same way with call history only. People are way to easy to complain about something that works perfectly fine as if it is the end of the world. If you want a contact through the phone app you have a few options. Scroll the list until you find them If you call them often they are at the top of the list, seems to make sense. Have trouble finding them, start typing their name and they will pop up. Still not satisfied press the favorites icon and it will take you into the people app, slide to the left to get all contacts. For issues with dialing a home instead of cell when clicking on a contact in call history don't click on the the call, click on the contact card to right side of the list and select the number you want to use. If that isn't enough options for you maybe I would go back to a Blackberry.

Right, and I didn't know that till I made that post a few weeks ago. That is all fine and well.

No, it is not enough options for me, I want more options, and I will not go back to a Blackberry for them....I will wait if I must, or maybe develop my own app for handling call screens better....

Dont forget you can also create shortcuts on your desktop to call or text people. There is also speed dial that can be used, I know there is a thread that has the instructions for this. I agree with pjsockett, there are so many different ways to make a call, hard to complain about that.

Sorry you are incorrect. When your contacts were first loaded, or when you clear the history, when you press the phone button you have your alphabetical phone directory list. As soon as you call one of the people in the alphabetical phone directory, it removes that person from the alphabetical phone list and puts them on the top. Now you have a mixed up list which is nothing but WRONG!! If we want history, we should press a button or menu option to get it. If we want the keypad, we should press a button or menu option to get it.

My HTC Tilt was NOT wrong like this, neither were any of my other phones.

For now I will use the work around people icon until this crummy phone app is working correctly.

You are going to be waiting a long time. There is nothing "wrong" with the way it's working, it's simply not to your liking. When you say "alphabetical phone directory" you're talking about call history, not the directory. The directory is people, and that's separate.

As noted before by myself and others, this is the way that pretty much every phone on the market works, so I wouldn't call the people app (equivalent to an address book on other phones) a "workaround".

Now, if the phone application can be made to have a shortcut to your directory, then you're good, but I don't think that's going to happen anytime soon.

I think your words got a little messed up here.

When you click on the the phone button to make a phone call, it shows both the dial pad and the 3 most recent calls. If you hide the dial pad it shows the 8 most recent calls ... even if these calls are not in your contacts. I called Carbonies Pizza last night, and it is not in my contacts ... but it does show up in my call history. If you want to see an alphabetical list of your contacts, dont pust the phone button, you wont get one.

If you pust the people button, you will get an alphabetical list of your contacts. From here you can select a contact, and then choose if you want to call their cell, home number, work number, send a text, send an email, ect (depending on the information you have for them).
Like Needsdecaf said, there is nothing work with either the history or the contacts, its just a matter of what button you need to push to see what your want.

I understand that prior to any phone calls being made that the call history shows your contacts in alphabetical order, and that was probably misleading.

That's because there are not phone calls to create a history. As soon as you make a call you have created a call history which is why it would seem mixed up to you. Every cell phone I have used smart or dumb has done this.

I agree with the OP that it is very annoying. Yes there are work arounds and the OP knows how to work around it.

Yes I can create a shortcuts but I prefer using the green call button. I guess real buttons are better than touchscreen when it comes to a phone.

Also when hitting the green call button, I wish the dial pad won't show up. maybe have it as an option. Sometimes there is lag, sometimes there's no lag, you might hit something twice by accident.

It is annoying to used this while driving and trying to make a call. I used to be able to drive and make a speedial call without even looking at the phone.

One thing that hasn't been mentioned here is the "smart dialing" feature of the phone app. Yes - when you press the phone button, it shows your call history with the dialer overlay, but just start typing somebody's name on the keys and bingo - your list is filtered to matching names. If you press on "contact" icon on the far right, it will bring up their contact info. But if you just press in the middle of the result for the person you want, it dials them I think this is actually the fastest way to get to a contact - faster than searching for them in the People app, if you ask me.

My HTC Tilt was NOT wrong like this, neither were any of my other phones.

Your right your Tilt was different, but not in the way you are saying. HTC's Windows phones don't show your contact list at all in the dialer it is only call history. If you still have it check it out. My last 4 phones were all htc and they worked exactly the same way, call history in the dialer and a full listing in the contacts app.

On Android they chose to use a history by caller. Each contact is listed only once in the list no matter how many calls have been placed. If no calls have been placed those contacts remain at the bottom of the list in order.

I guess people will agree to disagree on this topic because I would hate it if the dial pad didn't come when I pressed a button for PHONE. I have no desire to have my PHONE application be a list of several hundred contact that I have to scroll through. I much prefer HTC's method where I can create quick shortcuts for may most used contacts, search by t9 if they are frequent and dial if they aren't in my list.

I see what you're saying but it's not a flawed system, it's just not your preference. From one click of the menu button you can get a list of all contacts, full call history, and all speed dials or favorites.

Hey, Get a Droid... It doesnt even have a green phone button, and when you do navigate to the phone icon and press it you only get the dial pad and to top it off you dont even have smart dialing. Sort of gives you that Windows CE phone edition dialer feel....

Press the green buttons and get your most recent call ist and smart dialing dial pad.... what more could you want?

I agree with the OP... I find the call log irritating. Perhaps most phones do this, I don't know, I've only had six or seven phones in the last 15 years, but I don't recall any of them advertising my recent calls every time I try to use the dial pad. Wouldn't it make sense to assume that if someone is using the dial pad they don't need the call log? What if there are calls that I don't want other people to see?

My last phone gave me a choice - use the contacts, the call log or the dial pad, it didn't give me a dial pad with the last three calls I made peering over the top for all to see.

Geez - people... get a clue.

This is actually a standard feature of just about every cell phone and smart phone I have ever seen...and I have seen a lot of them. Think none of us have a clue? Go to a store and start playing with the phones. They pretty much all do this. On regular phones it may not show all your recent calls when you look at the dial pad, but then again they have physical dial pads. If you hit the send button it does bring up the call history on pretty much every phone though.

The call history is a convenience feature for the phone. The people that built it figured you might want to call people more than once or maybe even redial the previous number. I doubt they put much time into worrying about people freaking out about others seeing their recent calls. CIA operatives and cheating spouses where most likely not on their main demographics list.

If it really bothers you that much, get a clue yourself and clear the call logs.
