Samsung Vibrant or T-Mobile G2?

I second the notion. :p

Yeah the screen makes it more attractive but the g2 has a great screen too(3.7 I believe) it also has a physical keyboard (which is always a plus) it also has stock 2.2( no touch wiz UI). I think I might get the G2 hopefully that is the real date because I wanna test it out myself.

Can't really compare the two imo. Isn't the G2 sporting a 800MHz instead of 1GHz CPU?

No, it is running a newer 1ghz snapdragon(not the dual core though) regardless it's running stock Android so it should run faster than the Vibrant(I believerhr touch wiz UI is making the phone act and seem slower). Finally, I think the camera has flash so that might be much nicer quality then the one on the captivate and vibrant

Okay, didn't know about the snapdragon, though isn't hummingbird on the Vibrant faster than the snapdragon? I'm also hearing G2 is close to G1 in thickness, that'd be a big negative for me. If not it looks like it just comes down to preference between nicer visuals vs LED flash and physical keyboard. Would love to have LED flash myself (and LED notification lights) but physical keyboard is no longer a concern for me now that I'm using Swype.

the hummingbird cpu has different and more instructions and calculations per second, so (from what iread) that based on the snapdragon processors, it is faster, and from what i read that it will be on par with one of the 1.5ghz snapdragons aswell.

they said the 1ghz hummingbird with the dedicated gpu is a technical feat.

I also dislike that there are no LED notifications as well, I get an email and I have to push the lock button, if I could set the LED to a specific color(maybe built or a 3rd party app etc) I could say "Oh I have an email from my exchange account, better check it" or "Oh I have a text, I should check it later when I am done driving".

It's really something very convenient that I was extremely frustrated about.

I know the G2 is out but I am curious, the G2 is coming with stock 2.2 and it has a pretty big screen, so should I get a G2?

G2 offers no advantages, the vibrant is the flagship.

why do I say that? well lets see, the vibrant ALREADY can get up to 5mbps download, do you really need 7+mbps on a phone? I mean really, do you?

Vibrant has the best screen, larger than G2. Vibrants screen size and screen sensitivity makes a physical keyboard obsolete.

g2 has a slower 800mhz processor and slower gpu, vibrant has the fastest processor out right now and a insanely fast GPU.

Vibrant has 16gb internal memory with option for external 32.

vibrant is the best phone on t-mobile, getting the g2 doesn't add up.

I will keep my vibrant. With 2.2 I don't need anything else unless it blows this away which it wont. I say vibrant will be good till mid next year. I bet the dual cores wont ship this year I just have a feeling .

Plus the g2 has a keyboard, the more moving parts the more hardware issues. I love having just a screen and honestly I bet I could out type most people with a keyboard. I fly with this thing ....

Anyways it will be cool, but not for me, I hate keyboards .

This. Ask me a few months ago & I would've said I absolutely needed a physical keyboard. I was still using a BlackBerry. Then something just snapped & I decided I needed a large screen & I could get used to touch typing. Now, I don't need a physical keyboard adding bulk & moving parts to my phone. I'm definitely passing on the G2.

I had planned to upgrade from my G1 to the G2. My hopes were for a 1+ GHz processor on a fully featured smart phone.... front facing camera, LED flash, keyboard, basically everything you could find on any of Verizon's 4 high end phones.

I bought a vibrant 3rd party and off contract as a stop-gap, which I am pretty happy with.

The G2 with a slightly smaller and non SAMOLED screen with no front facing camera is going to be a hard sell to me. My contract runs up in October, so T-mobile will need a very good reason for me to consider contracting for 2 more years.

We'll have to see if the G2 is enough of a jump to make me consider it.

Don't forget the notoriously lousy battery life of HTC phones. The G1 would drain while doing nothing, almost as fast as it would charge.

800MHz Qualcomm Scorpion. As I understand it, the future dual-core Snapdragon will consist of two Scorpion cores. Talk about G2 buyer's remorse when that comes out...

FIRST, this thread is silly because it is posted in a Vibrant forum, of course there will be bias.

Now with that said, only an idiot would pass up a vibrant for the G2. Just look at the specs. Enough said! Physical keyboard? Ugh dont make me laugh, the Vibrants 4inch screen and exceptionally responsive touchscreen making typing a dream.

Plus with the vibrant gets me 5mpbs download, why do I need 7+mbps with G2. Really, like thats going to make a huge difference in my life, having faster download on my phone, when it won't even make a noticable difference?
The only person who would notice a benefit of the faster download is someone who is breaking T-mobiles TOS and tethering their internet to their laptop. Then faster speeds make sense on a laptop. With that said, this same person tethering and abusing the system should have their service cancelled and be permanently banned from T-Mobile. No WAY IN HELL do I want a few jerks abusing tether, then everyone else has to pay the consequences with Teired and Capped data.

So the choice is simple, if you some how have a few brain cells loose, and think that 7+mbps vs 5 will make a difference on your cell phones tiny web browser, then by all means get the G2, maybe you watch porn on your phone, and need the faster streaming, I dunno.

The correct answer is this:

Based on T-mobile's track record, there is a fair amount of doubt as to whether the G2 will be as fast as the Vibrant.

T-mobile's ONLY high end branded phone is the Vibrant, and that is only because Samsung made a point of releasing the phone on all four carriers.

The G2 looks decent on paper, but it doesn't seem to be pushing any envelopes. Only time will tell, though

I have 2 big hang ups about my Vibrant...this is one. How hard is it to put a notification led on the damn front of the thing? lol It's something so simple that is a HUGE pain. I had my G1 set up to flash red for missed calls, blue for sms and green for email. It was so convenient [sp].

The other big pain in the nuts with the Vibrant is the lack of a dpad...track ball...optical thing...whatever. NOTHING. You have to move the cursor when typing solely by touch which is sometimes a pain. An Incredible-esq optical thing would be a great addition to this phone.

All that said, I LOVE this phone. It's so fast, the screen is amazing (I mean...really...it's incredible...I have a Samsung HDTV and I thought IT looked good. They should make SAMOLED HDTVs!), it came with Swype (which I had on my G1 and loved...didn't even have to get used to it on the new phone!) so text entry with no keyboard isn't an issue. All in all, I'm VERY pleased with the Vibrant.

I too was kinda on the fence about whether to wait a couple months for the G2 or just get the Vibrant. I decided to try the Vibrant (obviously) and, from what I read about the G2, I don't regret it...yet. The G2 would have to be P E R F E C T for me to regret getting the Vibrant...4" screen, keyboard, dual core CPU, made by HTC, 8mp cam, front facing cam, etc. That may be a while out though. We'll see.

So...for now, I say go for the Vibrant! You won't regret it!

I don't know, having owned and used the Vibrant for about a month and a half now I'd have to say I would definitely think on it.

I could care less about 4G, it's just that I'm slightly disappointed with the Vibrant. There's just so much to love about it, there really is - especially coming from a BB Curve, as I did.

But it's just the little quirks that really mess up the experience for me. For example, my phone doesn't seem to consistently check for email despite my settings. Sometimes the phone will tell me I have no email when there is email sitting on my server. Sometimes my alarm just doesn't go off, or it goes off and I choose snooze, and it never goes off again.

On such an otherwise amazing phone these little quirks and bugs in some of the most basic functionality really is a drag. And the GPS issue is definitely a sore spot for me as well.

But, on the upside, I am hoping that a lot of these issues will be addressed in the future, if not by Samsung, then by independent developers.

From my understanding, it's only under-clocked at 800mhz but is more powerful than the current snapdragon and the gpu (adreno205) is supposed to be on par with the PowerXR SGX540 in the hummingbird chip-set.

Not saying it's better but the new MSM7x30 chip-set in the G2 is on par with the hummingbird.

Not calling you a liar but...where do you get this info? Looked on youtube for games running under the adreno205, and they look nice, yes, but the FPS kinda blow and the games dont look as good either. the PowerXR SGX540 is amazing. its better than whats in the iphone 3gs and iphone4

Pretty sure it isn't true.

What is Adreno 205 and how does it compare to other GPUs? - Smartphone Benchmarks Forum

"Based on the early benchmark results, Adreno 205 is expected to be about four times faster than Adreno 200. Samsung's Hummingbird with PowerVR SGX540 is expected to beat Adreno 205 by a small margin, however. Still, given that nothing touches the performance of SGX540 today (that's right, iPhone 4 is not even close!), this is quite an improvement."
