Moving from branded to unbranded = warrenty valid

ok well after we now waiting over 4 weeks just for orange to push out froyo 2.2 and they still havent i decided to give them a call to get some more information.

i went thorough to there insurance department just because they would be the best people to talk to about warrenty validation.

after have a long talk to the orange CS and being told froyo would be pushed out to me in the middle of september i asked him what if i de-branded my phone.

this where his exact words,
"If you download and install and fully support ROM (OS) from a verified source ie HTC that does not modify any of the internal working and is signed to say that it works with your current phone you warrenty would remain valid, and your insurance would not be void." (well close enough)

basically he said as long as its a verify OS verison that works with the HTC desire then its valid and orange cannot deny your warrenty replacement if the phone stops working.

i asked him to put a note on my account and also his full name which im guessing he done ( he did tell me but who knows, i could hear him typing though).

so i think its all good to de-brand. i will be doing that soon

Well this was my argument with Vodafone before they brought out 2.2.

I debranded my desire and haven't looked back since. It would be interesting to know if the above applies to all carriers, as it's more of a common sense approach

sorry, slightly off-topic, but - is the phone covered for replacement in the case of faults etc by a warranty, even if you haven't taken out insurance with your network?

yup for hardware and manufactoring defects then yes it covered.

i bought insurance because i do a look of traveling for work and the fact i spend alot of time near water aswell

If your phone fails becasue it is faulty, I belive the warrenty period is 24 months in the UK (as its a EU Law), this wouldn't affect your insurance, and you would go to where you got your phone, which would be a new work provider or a shop.

If you drop your phone and it damges, or lose it or have it stolen, this is insurance and thats what that is for. After your warrenty period is up, the insurance would cover faults.

well good luck with that, because i personally know of at least one close friend who has returned their ( once branded but now de-branded phone ) to orange for repair only to have it returned with a note saying it has been tampered with and as a result will not be covered under the terms of the warranty.

well maybe he should of argued his case,

i was told by the CS from orange that as long as the update is offical and it came from HTC its self... ( IE from their site) then it would not invalidate the warrenty.

this is because it is in fact the software the original phone comes with and then orange "tamper" with it by adding their bloatware to it.

the only thing you can do is to ring up and ask, i got a very helpful person who put all his details on my account saying it wouldnt invalidate my warrenty. (well he said he put his details on there)

Read the Orange warranty/Orange care T's&C's. Specifically mentions loading non orange approved (AKA Orange branded firmware) or debranding will void your warranty with Orange.

Orange always have returned debranded phones and charged customers. There was a huge uproar on several Nokia forums when this was made policy when the N95 was launched, Orange were several firmwares behind, and people bricked their phones debranding.

so what happens if the damage isn't to do with the mdification?

Sadly, Orange dont care. They use the modification to prove you've breeched the contract, and so they dont have to repair your phone.

IF you've already had a doorstep swap, then watch out for the cost of the handset appearing on your bill!

Should be able to find plenty of examples of Orange doing this if you search. As I say, most I found were from angry N95 owners when the policy was introduced.

he said this would only effect me if i took apart the phone IE an unauthorised repair maintenance or modification, modification is in regards to adding to the phones internal workings not by using a signed a verified OS version.

Sounds about right to me, I'm pretty sure that as long as what you're asking them to do isn't directly related to any software changes you've made it really doesn't matter. And even if it is, as long as it's official there isn't a lot they can do.

Hi guys. Just to let you know I work for HTC tech support so thought I should give you the correct advice as orange often pass on incorrect info to customers and I dont wanna see you get stung.

The warranty is provided by us not orange- It is for 12 months on orange but 24 on other networks, and if you debrand an htc device it WILL void the warranty as it is basically hacking the rom.
Hope this helps and be wary of what customer service advisers advise you

It's a shame that warranty is voided by using an official ruu released by HTC, just because the cid doesn't match.

Unfortunately in order to get the best out of an orange desire, this has to be done.

Manufacturers, stop giving Orange free reign on handsets.
