Plans if you already have a phone?

I was just wondering what are the options with Rogers if you already have a smartphone, for example if you bought a Nexus One from Google or an iPhone directly from Apple.

Because when I go to Rogers.com, all I see are the regular plans at regular rates. That means you would have to be an idiot to refuse the phone if they don't charge you less if you don't want it.

I'm sure there's a plan without the phone? What did you do?

The benefit is not price reduction it's the fact that if next week Bell comes out with a better plan you say FU Rogers, see ya later, and go with Bell. Same thing anywhere else. It allows you the freedom of going where you want when you want.

You also have a benefit when you call retentions, you now have them by the balls

I understand, but for someone on a budget, it's not very smart, at least not in a market like Canada where all the plans are somewhat the same from one company to another, i.e. if you can't afford to pay for a phone in full, you're stuck on a contract, and if you got a bargain phone you're still stuck with an expensive monthly bill.

Because I was wondering what will Rogers offer me when my 3-year contract is over. For sure they'll try to sell me a new 3-year agreement with a new phone, but I would probably prefer a good discount and keep my current phone.

I mean whats the worst you can get from calling Rogers and asking, a "no"?

It's worth a shot and you'd get an answer 100x better than any of us could offer speculating.

Personally I went with Fido for a year and loved them, but I found a corporate deal at Bell that blew the pants off my Fido month to month. Retentions gave me a sweet deal even after only a year of being a good customer. IMO retentions are where the deals at.

It would be nice if they had lower rates for unsubsidized accounts but they don't. I don't see that as a reason to go for a contract just to get the phone. You already have one and the contract ties you to a mess of other problems not the least of which are things such as data cutoffs if something like the GPS/911 fiasco happens again. If going non contract is the same money then that's still the wiser thing to do.

I'll bet there are a few Rogers users that bought the Bell branded Galaxy S. Instead of waiting for R's and the probable lack of front facing camera they can already be using one. And can switch carriers if they want. Or take the phone offshore and use it for pennies on the dollar to what a contract phone would cost to use.
