Random "Touch-Tone" sounds in ear during calls. Google voice issue? Or Phone?

I've done a bunch of searching on google and elsewhere on this in the past but have not seem to have found anything on the topic, but it came back on my mind today after making a call.

Almost [anytime?] I am speaking on the phone [with anyone?] I will intermittently get a "touch tone" sound blasted in my ear randomly. At first I thought it may have been because my ear/face was hitting a button on the screen, but this happens even when the keypad is hidden. The other odd thing is that it only seems to happen on MY end, the caller on the other end will *NEVER* hear it when I have asked.

I *do* use google voice for all my calls. I do not know if this happens outside of GV or if it has anything to do with it. Any ideas why this could be, or has anyone run into this issue?

Today it was in my mind because it was happening a LOT (every minute or so) when I was talking to one of my friends. I never took note about it happening more often with her vs. other people or not [honestly, I don't use TALK so much on my phone] but we had a longer conversation today and it kept happening randomly.

Any ideas why this would be? It's definitely coming through the headset and not out of the speaker (ie: it will drown out the voice on the other end), and I did disable all touch-tone sounds on the phone. It is the sound you would receive through a regular phone system through the headset, not a chinsy "beep" or something the phone itself would make, it's coming across the "line" but again only I am hearing it.

Odd indeed.

I googled "tone during calls" and came up with many reports in various device forums, most of which ended up pointing to Google Voice as the culprit.

Laugh if you want, but is it usually when you are listening to a woman's voice? This was noticed years ago on Vonage. The consensus at the time was that sometimes a certain voice hits a frequency that the phone interprets as a DTMF button push and relays that tone. Not saying that this is it but you might want to note who is talking when this happens.

Yup. I've noticed it many times and every time it has been a woman or kid.

interesting, and yes, always a woman here as well. Yeah i found the huge thread on google voice I was just searching the wrong thing apparently, thanks Frisco. I reported the phone call via GV but it seems to have been a problem for a very long time for a lot of people

This is uncanny. I was just thinking about this today as it happens on my phone as well whenever I use GV and speaking with a woman. I just thought it was my friend's iPhone being the culprit, but apparently it is GV.
