I followed the simple instruction i found on the net see below , and i got the OK message after i typed in the password , then i re-booted , but whenever i run a app that needs root, i get a message that i dont have it.

I have run the though the rooting guide a few times and i am still having problems.

I download my apps directly to the phone from appbrain , what am i doing wrong.

PLEASE HELP.

THANKYOU.

- Turn on the device and click the icon to open the phone dialler
- Enter the code '3845#*540#'
- Select the option 'Module Test', then 'Stability Test' then 'Enable Root Permission'
- You will now be prompted for a password - enter :SWIFT::GT540:
- A toast message will briefly appear saying 'OK' - your root access is now enabled!
- Reboot your device, and now when you connect via ADB, you'll see you have a root prompt (#).

I'm having a completely different problem, when I follow those instructions, and they're the same everywhere on the net, when I get to the hidden menu after typing in 3845#*540# I click on Module Test, then Stability Test, then 4 options come up: 'Data Abort', 'Prefetch Abort', 'Kernel Panic' and 'Abort by User Mode'. 'Enable Root Permission' is NOT there! I've put the phone in debugging mode and connected it by USB to my laptop (which has the SDK but not sure how to use it) but its still not there. Am I doing something wrong? Or am I just plain stupid? Please help. :)

P.S. the phone IS running Android 1.6 Donut and it has software version GT540-V10a-JUN-24-2010 which is the latest version from LG. Also i'm pretty new to Android, only had the phone for a couple of weeks.

did you buy your mobile from carphonewarehouse , as people have reported that the "Enable Root Permission" has been removed.

see thread below.

Yeah, I got it from Carphone Warehouse, and that thread you posted has comment saying 'http://www27.zippyshare.com/v/18681348/file.html Here is the link for "android root" with one click and poweruser permissions. Have fun:)' i'm a bit overcautious because I'm worried that this would be some form of Android virus (if they exist) and all the other comments say to flash the phone with the roms posted on the 1st page, which just confuses me even more because I have no idea how to do that :p so that apk there, is it safe and does it work, do you know?
Thanks

I have an o2 gt540, but i did flash to latest rom from the top of the page i linked manually, It took a while too find software that worked, I used the LG-Utils-0.4.2 software and it worked great.

I also had the LG PCSuiteIV software on my notebook, installs lots of drivers, also i had the stock lg firmware update software, on my notebbook which said my gt540 already had the latest version on it:thinking:

Even though my gt540 has the "Enable Root Permission" and i enabled it, and i used the UniversalAndroot.rar , most software that requires root still say my 540 is not rooted?

Hmm, isn't the V10A the latest? Or is V10C? This is pretty confusing, I assume that I have the latest firmware version because I got the phone not long ago. But I read on another forum that LG will release a new firmware for the GT540 which is meant to me Android 2.x in September, but I emailed LG and they said they weren't sure when the next update will be released. Until then, I think I won't risk bricking my phone by flashing it incorrectly. Thanks anyway though! :)

Rooting the phone allows you to put custom rom's onto the phone and install 3rd party apps that require 'superuser' access. I'm sure if you Google it you'll find lots of reasons to root your phone. Haha that's why I got the phone, because they have a good deal on :D I heard about that 2.1 upgrade as well, hopefully it will come out around that date in the UK as well :D

What are the benefits of 'rooting' the phone?

Mine is a week old, and to be honest, I haven't felt the need to change anything, apart from the need to have 2.1, which I have been told will come on September 14th in Russia.

Luckily, I didn't buy mine from Carphone Warehouse, who have a good deal on at the moment. :)

I'm having the same issue as you Tinderbox, I have the option to root, get the "ok" toast msg, but software doesn't reconise that the handset should be rooted, i've all tried a downloaded root patch that i read on talkandroid and that didn't work either... (listed below if anyone else want to try)

"Prat Says:

!!!! Use it to Your own risk !!!!!!
Put your phone into USB Debugging Mode first and connect your phone.
This is simple method. Download the zip file. Extract it. Navigate to the
extracted folder and run the file “root.bat” a CMD prompt will pop up and
start doing it’s work, don’t press anything. When the process is done your
phone will restart and the cmd prompt will close, your phone will then be
rooted."

Also, can anybody tell me how to boot the GT540 in safe mode and how to flash a .ZIP file? (needed for an update of some kind for Dave@MoDaCo's recommendation of ChainsDD's Superuser app )

Lastly on my 1.6 - 2.1 update journey to hell, check my forum progress here.
Long story short, hopefully O2 will have sorted and approved the 2.1 update within a matter of days of 2011!!!

z4root is no longer on the market so go here z4root.apk - 4shared.com download free Download it to your PC and then transfer with the USB to your memory card. (You could also download it directly to your phone). Then using your file manager (sucha as astro) go to the file and click on it. You will then get the option to install. Once installed it is very easy to root.

Works perfectly and I got my phone from CPW.
