Epic Citadel

I've seen those videos and i'm amazed by the quality.

It has nothing to do with Google and everything to do with the fragmented hardware.
If you want games like that just give up now. There are already multiple GPUs on the market with the manufacturers frantically trying to build more competitors. It just doesn't work.

Look how slow it has been just to get 3D games on Android, nevermind 3D games that push the hardware. A dev could devote a huge amount of time and resources to a monster 3D game but to make it THAT good it would have to be based around one particular GPU, this limits the market and obviously limits the return on the app.

For the sake of the platform manufactures need to settle on one GPU to give devs half a chance.

No, no they don't. Is there just one GPU for computer gaming? Also, considering 3D games have been on Android for years now, your point is silly at best. It has nothing to do with fragmentation and everything to do with marketing.

Google need to help some devs push the snapgragon and hummingbird chips to the max as a showcase for droid gaming. what with the soon to be released win mo 7 they'll soon be getting it from all directions.

I think NFS: Shift Snapdragon version did a very good job pushing the Snapdragon's GPU. But i think this is probably the limit of what a Snapdragon's GPU can do.

The Hummingbird actually have a better GPU then what is in the iPhone4 and iPad, that is design by the same GPU company. So if Unreal ever port their engine to Android, then we can expect even better rendering and frame rate from the Hummingbird devices.

PS. NFS:Shift on snapdragon starts out pretty smooth, but once you get to later races, you can tell the frame rate was not keeping up with the speed your super cars :(

I agree Google needs to buy a couple of top shelf 3D game developers for the Android platform. At the very least it would get 2-3 good AAA 3D titles out each year for the platform and get the ball rolling.

The whole social gaming app scene they seem to be fixated on frankly is a joke and won't sell their platform.

While I dislike social gaming in general too, I have to disagree. Apple sells a lot of iPhones, iPads, and iPods, but the gaming market is still largely nothing beyond what you mention, and your typical flash equivalents. "Real" gaming still demands something like a DS, and likely will for awhile because that is simply where you have a user base large enough, willing to spend $30, on a bigger budget title. Games for the iPhone using the unreal engine, of any length and quality aren't going to be cheap to develop because of the cost in development, and they're not going to sell that well, for awhile (it'll get there, just not yet). For now, I think most gaming on phones is social or silly time wasters /opinion

I have the fastest phone in the world right now (Galaxy S) and I'll never see anything like that for my phone. Blah. If only android hardware was built to compete with iPhones from the beginning :(

Would be much easier if all high end Android phones were based around simalar hardware like the iPhone, would make it easier on developers and of course easier to port games.

Probably why I will also own an IPOD Touch to go along with my Droid/Droid 2 by Christmas heh. They could make games like that for Android, they would just need to pick a baseline phone and build up from there. Much like some games on Itunes can no longer be played by 1st or 2nd gen Iphones. Its up to the developer where they set that baseline but it can easily be done for Android. My Droid I would assume is as powerful as a 2nd gen Iphone if not moreso.

This is something that MS and google will need to address, if they want to make an impact with modile gaming on their devices. Unless im mistaken WinMo 7 will have the same problem as loads of devices will be coming out from many diffrent companies, all with diffrent specs.
They should need to come up with a standard which all gaming phones must meet in order to be classed as a gaming device, this standard can then be updated every year or 2 with a diffrent version so that developers can develop a game for a certain standard, should make it easier for consumers to know it the game will run on thier device too.

I think WinMo 7 actually won't suffer from this issue since Window Phone 7 is a paid license OS in which Microsoft set a minimal hardware requirement. So like Apple, WinPho 7 will be a lot easier to develop for comparing to Android

Exactly, games like Angry Birds, Peggle and Plant's vs zombies are huge sellers, and there's nothing to them really. If I want to play a proper game, I get on my PC or PS3.

That's just it, pretty much everybody does, apart from you it seems! Can't help that there's not really any lengthy games on mobiles can I...

Besides, when you're playing a game for more than just 10 minutes at a time, would you prefer to look at a 42" screen or a 4" screen? Would you prefer to use a phone's touchpad, or a proper joypad, or proper keyboard & mouse? Don't get me wrong, I feel the same way you do about casual games, they're just 5 or 10 minute time wasters that you can just pick up and play whenever. Although fun, they don't really do a right lot for me, I'd much rather get engrossed in a game of fallout3, mass effect 2 or something. Games like this can't be played well with just a few buttons on a touchscreen though.

Also, no matter how quick handsets will be able to run games like this in the future, it's still far easier playing them in comfort rather than being hunched over your phone for hours. That's why casual gaming has grown so popular, and stuff like angry birds is the number 1 game on mobiles. It's fun to pass a few minutes, but not what I'd class as a proper game. The name "mobile" would imply you're out and about, busy doing something. So you might only have a spare 5 or 10 minutes here and there, hence casual gaming is so popular. Know what I mean?

A standard which all gaming phones meet to be classes as a gaming device? There is no such phone out ATM that can be classified or compared close to a gaming device, if you want a gaming device , get a ds. Maybe when the playstation phone comes out , this may change but , a phone is a phone and a gaming device is a gaming device. That's like my microwave compared to my tv.

Many Android phones outclass the shit out of the DS' pathetic, pathetic specs. It's just that the form factor isn't optimal for gaming.

The other day I went to get a haircut. Walked in and there was a bit of a line. I ended up waiting 25 minutes. So I pulled out my PS3 and 32" HDTV and started playing God of War III while I waited. I do this ALL the time. There are so many situations in which I have nothing to do for half an hour or so. I'm so glad the PS3 is small enough to fit in my pocket. I know that everyone feels the same way I do when it comes to mobile games. That screen is just so small when it's only a foot away from you. How can anyone stand that? How can anyone stand to play games on a DS or PSP? I mean NOBODY uses those, right? Definitely not the 6 or so million people that have downloaded angry birds so far. Or the people that played Zenonia all the way through (this is no short game...)

Agreed, there are occasions where you have a little more time, but my point was that casual games are FAR more popular on handheld devices, angry birds being one of those casual games. You don't have to keep on playing for at least half an hour at times just to be able to save your progress for example. I'm not saying lengthy games shouldn't exist on them, I'm just saying WHY hardly anyone seems to bother developing them, as people seem to be embracing casual games a lot more than proper games on mobile platforms. Which will make developers more money?

Is there an ignore function on this forum?

I stopped reading here, trying to claim everybody else thinks the same as you... I can’t really see much point reading the rest.

No ignore function that I know of, I've looked already. But if you'd have read my post you've have seen I was actually saying I feel the same way about casual games as you do! But the majority of mobile gamers want casual games, which is why stuff like angry birds and peggle are such huge sellers.

The point I'm making is that those engines that ID and Epic are pushing out for the iPhone at that kind of quality is just that a games engine for devs to do with as they see fit. I'f its to create some intense FPS so be it but the engines they create can also do more than just FPS games. they can can be turned over to just about anything.

The Android platform needs to be at least able to run this sort of stuff, if it's to survive the long haul.

hmm... my iPod is my main gaming device. I know not too many people say that... but I've got over $1500 in it... and no PS3, no XBOX... and my PC is used for video and music (though I have a comp that can run games VERY well... I use to be into PC gaming... but not so much anymore...) - With devs making REALLY GOOD games for the iOS, and for so cheap, I'm actually kind of surprised when people bring up next gen devices... when EA's CEO is saying that 'console' games only make up 40% of the market... and that the iPod is their fastest growing platform...

I'm really surprised Android hasn't been built to keep up with iPods... it's why I'll never view my Android as a gaming device... right now it's just a little tablet that can get online. There are a couple of games on my Android... but since I've bought my tablet, I've only played games on it for about 45 minutes (over the last 3 months) - and since I've got my iPod (February) it's gotten at least 2 hours of gaming a day out of me.

It's the GameBoy of my late 20's and early 30's... and I'm addicted to it. I don't think I'll ever go back to 'console' gaming ever again. It just doesn't interest me anymore. The AppStore gives me games that are great for short bursts, casual gaming, hardcore gaming, and long drawn out RPG and adventure titles... I actually spent 26 hours on Samurai Girl before I ended up deleting it from my device (and hadn't even finished the game).

If Androids can't keep up with iPods, their future is bleak...

I'll throw my hat in the ring. :)

Great Little War Game is coming to Android soon. It's not an FPS view but it is at least nicely drawn 3D and we're targetting as many phones as possible.

We've developed our own tech and we're dead serious about making phone games that don't look like flash games.
