So i've heard a lot of buzz about messenger's in the market that will enable you to talk to ppl who are on BBM.. is there any truth to this?

I own a BB also, and have search endlessly to the answer to this question. Simply put, the answer seems to be NO.

If someone knows otherwise, that would be great. However, all fingers point to NO.

Man, I'd love this capability. Especially to be able to get access to all the BBM groups I was in! I bet the deveoper of such an app could make a killing. I'm sure the app would sell for $10 a pop!

ya I would pay for this also, but I don't think it will ever happen. It appears you would somehow need access to Rim or something I dunno to do this.

by the way, I would only pay like 99 cents, not 10 bucks. RIM dropped the ball with Blackberry, I predict within 10 yrs RIM will be gone, it will be the next Palm.

Can you believe RIM is selling outdated phones as current models, that they don't intend to support. So a T-mobile customer purchasing the Bold 9700 is getting an outdated phone, with fingers pointing towards no OS 6. Pisses me off.

I can't see RIM ever allowing 3rd party access to BBM. They're too security-conscious for that.

BlackBerry is still very strong in the corporate world, and with good reason. They're designed for security and BlackBerry Enterprise Server allows for control over groups of units or even specific units, e.g. not allowing
installation of software, email, SMS and BBM logging, push updates etc.

I do believe it's true, however, that it's only a matter of time before RIM falls by the wayside if they don't come up with more than the 9800 Torch. It's a very nice phone (as is the 9700, which I had before switching to an Android phone), but the iPhone is clearly making strides into the corporate world as Android eventually will.

RIM has a lot of catching up to do in some respects; whether they'll be able to cut it remains to be seen. Even so, if email, messaging and security are paramount to someone, as opposed to playing games, videos, tweaking and outright flashiness, BlackBerry's are still the best thing out there.

BTW I agree, iphone and android are toys. Nothing more than toys, at least the Android is. Nothing beats the security, and email of blackberry. There is no true push email like blackberry.

Indeed. There are moments when I miss my 9700. True push email is a glorious thing! And the keyboards...wonderful. Serious bummer about the lessening likelihood of OS 6 on the 9700.

As for BBM on non BlackBerry devices, you're correct, it'll never happen. All of that data is stored on RIM's servers, and they'll never allow access through a non RIM application. Now...if RIM themselves wanted to, they of course could put out the Android app...but that would defeat the purpose of an exclusive BB app. Just look at the recent issue with the UAE (United Arab Emerites). The largest countries in the Middle east threated to, or did, ban the use of RIM devices because RIM would not allow their government access to the data being sent to and from it's citizens. RIM finally appeased their request, but it took two countries banning them and the UAE to threaten it (FYI: there is a HUGE BlackBerry market in that area). Giving access to a simple 3rd party developer? Hah

If I could, I would have made this app last week.

Yeah, I know I'm dreaming big. I miss my BBM buds a lot. And, I agree about RIM. BlackBerries are awesome messaging devices, but people are demanding SO much more out of their phones these days! I don't know what part of that RIM fails to understand.

I wont be yelling at you, I think it's a pretty insightful comment, as were the others in this thread.

Honestly, as much as I could not wait to get rid of my blackberry there still is a lot I miss about it. The email being a big one.

Android, as I know it on my vibrant, does a lot of things for me really well, but they aren't important things... I've got fun games, an excellent way to view and read my RSS feeds, easy access to facebook and twitter, a great web browsing experience....

....but basic, really important stuff - like email and contact management leaves a lot to be desired and has been, in some cases, down right buggy for me. Battery life, though it's been manageable, is overall pretty poor.

If Blackberry offered a device with a comparable screen to what I have now, and a half decent web browsing experience I'd certainly consider them in the future.

People said Palm will always be in business we saw how that turned out. Remember in the 90's everyone, and I mean almost everyone that I knew owned a Palm. Palm was even one of Oprah's favorite things, my sisters team was responsible for getting the Palm as one of her favorite things. PS... Oprah's favorite things is mostly fake, she doesn't even use half the stuff.
So Palm was booming, it was Oprah's favorite thing, and somewhere someone just like you made the statement "Palm will always be in bussiness." Sure they are still in business but really, they are practically dead.

Also remember Netscape, people said netscape will always be around. Well now most people don't even know what netscape is. Netscape is dead.

Lets turn to Yahoo, yahoo was the main search engine, then suddenly Google popped up as if from thin air, although google has had roots in stanford for many years. Now everyone says google it, nobody except me still uses yahoo search.

What about Kmart, an American staple for the those on a budget, I would argue that ya thats almost gone too.

American car companies including GM, who would have imagined during the 90's and the SUV boom, that they would one day need bailout from the federal goverment.

Somewhere, in some forum, some wise person 10 yrs ago posted, "if GM doesn't start investing in more fuel efficient cars, in 10 yrs from now they will be nearly out of business" In that same forum, someone very similar to you posted "GM will always be in business." Only difference is, I don't see Canada ever bailing out RIM.

I'm being silly to make a point, too many huge companies have gone out of business. RIM is losing market share, and losing it fast.

If you think RIM will always be in business, thats your opinion, we are all entitled to one. My opinion is RIM will be gone within 10 yrs.

I agree that RIM needs to change & keep up with the times if they're going to stay afloat. However...it was RIM's decision to even target regular consumers to begin with, adding the Pearls & Curves to their lineup. RIM's software is adequate for business users, but with consumers demanding more from their phones RIM is in a hard spot.

I think RIM isn't in any IMMEDIATE danger since so many businesses use BlackBerries. But, I know some businesses are beginning to change over to iPhone, or at least giving their employees the decision on which phone to use.

Yeah, well GM is an automobile manufacturer and RIM is a cell phone manufacturer. Apples and oranges, as there are way too many influencing variables for each side to compare. As far as Blockbuster and newspapers, they've lost to digital competitors...what would RIM lose to, new alien technology based on telepathy? In any case, RIM has bridged a large gap with their Torch device, and in the coming years, they'll bridge it even more. Many people base RIM's success on the availability (and ease of creation) of apps, which is stupid. Did Apple go out of business when consumers realized there is about 90% more applications on the Windows OS? No, because Apple users knew what they wanted and nothing more, which Apple had available for them. Same with RIM. Those who buy RIM's devices want either an even mix of business and pleasure, if not tipping largely to the business side. No other device manufacturer has come close to RIM's business sense. Until that happens, RIM will always be in business.

GM was founded in 1908, RIM was founded in 1984 and has not been producing products for a very long time. If you are still missing the point, then I give up. Continue to believe RIM will always be around, because everything is set in stone right.

I do need to correct you. Maybe you are not aware how popular PALM was. Palm started this whole thing. If you think RIM and iPhone didn't get the idea from PALM you are hugely mistaken. Everyone in the corporate world owned a Palm. Palm was Blackberry. Palm started the whole craze, organizer, calander, tasks, you name it, everything that our current phones have, minus the voice calling capability. I've owned almost every popular Palm model, and they were fantastic.

There was even a wireless Palm, and guess what I owned that one also. You think Smartphones were the first to bring web browsing on the phone? You are mistaken, the Palm VII was able to pull information off the internet.

You think developer support is something new, apps are something new? Mistaken again, palm had apps. Infact we would use the Wireless Palm VII
along with an APP from Enflight to plan and file our flight plan prior to flying the private plane. Using that ancient Wireless Palm VII we could even get real time weather reports using the Enflight App.

There was not one person that I knew that did not own a Palm Pilot. Everyone that I knew in San Jose Silicon Valley who worked for companies like Oracle, Intel, Yahoo, Apple, Sun Microsystems, IBM, Cisco systems..the list goes on. Every employee, every engineer at those companies sported a Palm. Even outside of Silicon Valley, hollywood sported Palm, Oprah chose it as a favorite thing. If you were a New York exec, or worked on wall street, you owned a Palm.

Palm was the original and always will be, everything else including Blackberry is nothing more than a Palm with a built in Phone.

You would think, a company that had such a strong hold in the corporate world would still be around today right? Maybe you should second think your RIM BB comment.




Below is a photo of the first Color screen Palm, the Palm IIIc practically in mint condition. I remember the day I got it, I was sooo excited, same feeling I got when I purchased my Vibrant. That screen sparked the same hoopla that todays Super Amoled caused. It was a fascinating color display on the Palm.

Here is a photo I just took. In order, Palm Dead, Rim Blackberry Soon to be Dead, and finally The Future which is Android.

How is RIM's push different than google's? I know when I have my gmail open at work, often times I hear my phone beep even before the email pops into my gmail inbox.

but in android, your other email accounts like yahoo,hotmail,etc. don't get pushed abruptly like that of gmail.. but in BB, all your email accounts' mails get pushed into your BB right away, without delays..

We're obviously not on the same wave length here. I understood your points quite well, however I didn't feel they represented the situation correctly. You also insinuated that I felt apps and web browsers on smartphones are new, which I have no idea where you pulled that from. Lastly, of course I know how popular Palm was...you don't acheive the job titles that I have in life by -not- knowing that kind of stuff. I'll make this easy on everybody else here reading this and simply cease responding to whatever it is that you and I have in this thread. Let's get back on topic.

Of -course- it's going to look bad, considering technology doubles in aesthetics and features every year. If you were to put the new BB Torch next to the Samsung, and even a Palm Pre in there, that would be closer in comparison. Just for the record, Palm and RIM are companies, where as Android is an OS. RIM is the only company that makes BlackBerrys on the BB OS platform, Palm is the only company that makes Palm devices on the webOS platform, but there are many companys that make devices on the Android OS. Another bad comparison.

Lets clarify some points.

1) I actually own several Rim BB devices including the Bold 9700, I've posted GPS shots from my bold in this forum before.

2) I was using that Palm IIIc in that photo because it was the first palm with a color screen. I said that above.

3) When comparing smartphone market share, it is usually done using operating system... for example android, versus Apple's OS on iphone, their touch mp3 player, and ipad, finally blackberry os. This is why many people get angry when Apple claims to have such high smartphone market share, it is false, they are including 3 devices which run a similar OS.

4) One last clarification, since you seem to be able to only skim and not read in detail, go back up to post number 14, where you replied to me, look in the body of my original text, concerning Palm I said "Sure they are still in business but really, they are practically dead"
So no need for you to give me palms web addy, I've already acknowledged Palm is still in dismal existence prior to your weblink.
Next time you want to prove your point, re-read everything.

Final food for thought, when you first started posting on this forum I had never had interactions with you, until you basically said in one of the threads that I don't know what I'm talking about when it comes to batteries. I might have made a mistake using the verbage battery "surge" but your reply was rude to say the least. That was my first interaction with you.

So yes, you do rub me the wrong way at times, and I really don't have respect for people who put a price tag on life and healthcare. Heck, if it was up to me, I'd implement healthcare for pets, It breaks my heart to see an animal sick and or in pain. I don't mind paying my fair share of taxes, and the more I make in life, the more I should pay, so that essential programs like healthcare can be funded for those who are less fortunate.

yup that works.. but then you have to go all this trouble to set your emails up , but with BB, you dont need to do all this hoorah! LOL ,you dont need to set up an exchange or anything like that.. just simply set up your email acoounts be it yahoo, hotmail, etc.. even gmail now works just fine..

.. in android, the native email app is just not as convenient compared to BB's email.. and it's a fact! and not everyone is too familiar with the settings to get quick push syncs to their android phones.. see BB is more convenient and easier to use.. IMO,

but then on BB, if you are not on BES, it's a different story ,kinda, because on regular BIS, you only get your incoming emails and wont retrieve your old mails already in that email.. pffft, but at least they are pushed quick.. LOL
