Root I think I lost recovery...

I was using the ClockWorkMod recovery, and I decided to try Amon's again. So I flashed it from ROM Manager. I tried to boot into recovery, but I get stuck on the three skateboarders. So I restarted my phone, re-flashed the ClockWorkMod recovery, booted into recovery, and I get the same thing.

Amy suggestions? Am I screwed? Since I can use my phone just fine, maybe I can install a leak from HBOOT (1.49), then re-root?

Thanks to anyone who can help.

ThorSkaagi,

This post just showed-up on XDA that might help you out (its so new I'm still reading through it, but I wanted to point you there):

Hope this helps...

I've got an HTC hero and I stumbled upon this thread while searching for this exact topic, I was used to Amon Ra's recovery and clockworck was causing some problems for me and just in general confusing me, I "flashed an alternate recovery" through rom manager and things reverted back to amon ra's recovery without a problem

Just a head's up for anybody that might need the same info

ThorSkaagi (and anybody else, too!)

It probably can't be repeated often enough - if problems develop of this nature, so long as you have been making regular Nandroid backups, you can always re-flash the phone with either the Leak-V3 ROM or the "Official" RUU, and then re-perform the rooting of the phone.

Then, it's a simple matter of just restoring a Nand backup, and you are back in business.

That should make it easy to sleep well at night, knowing that recovery is almost always possible - so long as you are regularly making Nand backups.

Don't WAIT until you are ready to swap ROMs to make a Nandroid Backup, especially if your current ROM is working well and you are happy with it - get in the habit of making Nandroid backups regularly.

Awesome, and welcomed, advice, EU1. As a guy that works around computers and peripherals all the time, I can't tell you how many times a good back up has saved my neck and a major headache (not to mention more than a few grey hairs) when things have gone bad.

When I was in the business of fixing and replacing bad computers and stuff, I can't tell you how many times I heard someone wishing they had backed up their work before they had an issue. Now that I'm on the other end of the equation, an end-user, I make sure I back up almost to the point of it being a relly bad case of OCD.

Everyone I know laughs at me, but when I have a problem, I don't sweat anything and just kick back and relax.

Can someone tell me what the dir structure is for the nandroid backup file? I copied the data folder (date+timestamp) from the sdcard. I then formated the sdcard and tried just copying the nandroid data folder back to the sdcard, but when I go to restore the backup from ClockworkMod Recovery, it can't find the data to restore.

Thanks,

I would assume (perhaps incorrectly?) that ClockworkMod uses the same Nandroid backup that Amon_RA does. If so, the files are kept in the /sdcard under the "nandroid" directory like so:

Code:
[COLOR=blue]/sdcard/nandroid/NNNNNNNN/BDS-ccyymmdd-hhmm[/COLOR]

where [COLOR=blue]NNNNNNNN[/COLOR] is the serial number or unique ID of your phone
                        (don't publish that here)

The files contained in each backup directory are comprised of:

[COLOR=blue]  boot.img[/COLOR]
[COLOR=blue]  data.img[/COLOR]
[COLOR=blue]  nandroid.md5[/COLOR]
[COLOR=blue]  system.img[/COLOR]

Hope that helps. Cheers!

Thanks, that does help, but it still says couldn't open directory. I did change the NNNNNNNN to my serial number, but mine is 12 characters long and both letters and numbers. Should I take like the last 8 or first 8 characters?

If you make a Nandroid backup - of anything, including complete trash - it will create the folder for you. Then you won't need to guess!

Then move your BDS-YYYYMMDD-HHMM folder into that /sdcard/HT??????? folder, and you will be ready to roll.

St Veronus,

FYI, I didn't mean to imply that 'NNNNNNNN' was only/always eight characters long...I just didn't want to publish my serial # / unique ID...and so I replaced my number with that string for illustrative purposes. Sorry for the confusion.

edit: I did a quick search of these threads and found some actual examples of folks that published their Nandroid backup path :)eek:) and the first one was twelve characters long and began with "HTC".

Clockwork Mod Recovery keeps its backups in a file called clockworkmod on the sdcard. This is if you did the backups through ROM Manager. I believe if you use the nandroid backup through the recovery console then it creates a file on the sdcard called nandroid, just as it would with Amons. If you are doing a nandroid restore from the recovery console you have to go into Advanced Restore for it to see the files in the clockworkmod folder on the sdcard.

Thanks. I just tried a nandroid backup using the console and it doesn't create a nandroid folder. It still puts it into the clockworkmod folder. You still have to use Advanced Recovery to see them.

I guess the version of "Nandroid" that koush uses with his Clockwork must be slightly different than the one in Amon_RA. (I haven't used Clockwork, so I am unfamiliar with it).

Nevertheless, if the structure of the Nandroid backups is the same in both Amon_RA and Clockwork (boot.img, system.img, data.img, and nandroid.md5 files), I suppose the same hack might work if you move the files to the appropriate sub-folder of the Clockwork area on the SD.

Varkie - what is the exact folder name used in Clockwork? I think that is what the Saint is after - he needs to put his (PC) backup of his Nandroid backup into the correct location for Clockwork to see it.

Thanks for all the help! I was able to get it to boot and dl Rom Manager again. I then did a backup and it created this path...

/sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/YYYY-MM-DD-HH.MM.SS

That then contained the files:
.android_secure.img
boot.img
cache.img
data.img
nandroid.md5
recovery.img
system.img

Thanks again!

Very interesting.

The version of Nandroid (specifically, the script /sbin/nandroid-mobile.sh) in Amon_RA neither makes images of the recovery partition nor restores them (it is capable of doing so, but it is explicitly suppressed with a command line option).

I wonder if that explains why a few folks using Clockwork/ROM Manager occasionally got into trouble.

Don't know - just speculating.

I think you're right. T2noob was one of those people and I haven't seen him around in along time. But I think I remember him saying it had something to do with recovery image file. Most of the problems seem to have been from an older version of Clockwork. Koush has updated it about 3 times since a couple guys phones last Spring claimed it bricked their phones. I have no reason to doubt them but I've never had a problem with it in the 6 months I've used it. The most recent post I've seen with anyone having a problem with it bricking a phone was because the guy flashed a Hero ROM onto his Eris which you really can't blame on Clockwork then can you.

I really hate the fact that ClockWorkMod's and Amon's bckups aren't compatible with each other...

Actually, I think you could make an "Amon_RA Nandroid backup" out of a "ClockworkMod Nandroid Backup" since the ClockworkMod fileset is a super-set of the Amon_RA version.

I think all you'd have to do would be to repackage the files into the "BDS-ccyymmdd-hhmm" directory format, place the boot.img, data.img, system.img, and probably edit the nandroid.md5 file so that it only includes the MD5 sums for the above files (like the Amon_RA Nandroid backup does).

I don't know for sure that the nandroid.md5 for the ClockworkMod version looks just like the Amon_RA version, but I'll bet they are the same...(didn't eu1 say that the ClockworkMod just invokes the nandroid-mobile.sh script with different switches which causes these file differences?).

Anyway, I'll also bet that eu1 has something interesting to say about this...;)

Cheers!
