OH
I like my Eris. I know that it has issues, even rooted, but I still like it.

I was incredibly envious though when my wife added a line to our Verizon account to upgrade from her non-smart phone to X prior to our NE2 date. I was even greener when I received the e-mail that her X had been shipped. I kept trying to think of anything I could do just to get my hands on her X. When she texted me today and told me she received her X, I almost couldn't stand it. I counted the minutes until I could get home and check it out.

To my amazement, I still prefer my Eris. It is smaller than the X. Even though I haven't OC'ed my phone, I couldn't tell a difference in the speeds between the two phones. Where my phone has nice curves, the X is slab-sided. The buttons on my phone are rounded and almost smooth, where I found the buttons on the X to be almost ... jagged. The Home button on my phone is on far left below the screen, while that location is taken up by the Menu button on the X (and the Home button is to the right of it).
Even the camera button on the X is ugly, a big red blemish on the side of the phone while I can still use my trackball.

I fully realize that my phone has passed it's EOL date, doesn't have nearly as fast of a processor, a lower-resolution camera, and will never get another official update, but I will keep it for at least a while longer.

To those who want or have an X, congrats and I hope you're happy with your decision. But I still like my original Eris and can foresee keeping it at least until 1/1/2011, if not the end of my two-year agreement.

That, my friends, is my two cents. (I'll get off my soapbox now.)

That's a fine comparative review of two vastly different devices, pavirotten.

I take particular interest in the speed comparison, not to mention your eye for the aesthetic appeal of the Eris.

The big screen is what I'm looking forward to, though (I'll be getting the X pretty soon, although I'll keep the Eris activated and in use).

My experience (testing in the store) differ a bit wrt the speed as compared to a co-worker's non-rooted Eris (mine is rooted), though; I found the X to be a bit quicker in menu changing and app loading.

I own both an Eris and a Droid X. My X is my primary phone and I usually only bust-out the Eris when testing things related to root or playing with Android app development. I have no plans to abandon my Eris. I love that little guy and it is still an awesome phone (especially when rooted).

Yes, the X is a little bit "slabby", especially when compared to the sleek lines of the Eris. But I'm very comfortable with its lines and feel in the hand (I didn't care for the Incredible and I didn't want a slide-out keyboard). The X is also much faster in all respects to the Eris and the much larger screen is incomparable. Viewing and typing is awesome on the X (although I usually do change to landscape mode for typing since that seems to work better for me).

I actually have not rooted my X (yet) or installed the leaked version of Froyo thats floating-around out "there" (I know better than to install "leaks" ;)). The base 2.1 X can be slightly overclocked (but the kernel cannot be replaced). The devs are beginning to be able to build custom ROMs. Things are beginning to open-up in this regard.

I jumped on the X since I don't think we'll see too many other new phones with 4.3 inch screens...I think we'll see the 4-inch and below in the new, sleeker forms that we're starting to see now with the new phones that are being released.

Cheers!

My hubby has the X, and it's a cool phone, but it's not for me. It's too big, and doesn't fit comfortably in my pocket. (Or my hands, really.) I don't like the buttons, either. I know rooting is popular around here, but I still run stock, and I like Sense a lot more than Blur or whatever his X is running. I guess a better processor and future updates would be nice, but I really love my phone. :)

The reason I compared the Eris and the X is that both are in my house and I was truly excited about the introduction of the X. I was even considering trying to get Verizon to allow me to use my annual upgrade early in order to get the X as soon as possible.

After seeing the X up close and personal though, I think I'll pass.

Hmm i think hes just mad his wife got a Droid X and is actually comparing an eris to a Droid X and saying their both fast and that his Eris is better looking because he doesnt have a Droid X. But wait until he actually gets a Droid X he will probably be shooting his Eris down with a shotgun saying that he cant believe he stayed with that slow piece of junk. Past owner of Eris here. Can't believe i had that phone.

Whats the new motorola phone called?

Hasn't been officially revealed yet, so I can't say.

My Eris is spread out over a golf course from the Fourth when it was strapped to bottle rockets and taken for a ride. I still smile thinking about it.

performance

performance...for what? benchmarks? I don't need a 600$ phone with a dual core 2ghz chip and a 7" screen to read google reader, send texts, watch youtube, and call my grandmother. I really can't fathom what people are doing on their phones these days.

the X is bigger than the evo, and even the evo I can barely use one handed. I cannot stand having to use a second hand or two-hand grip to type or navigate.

however, it is very sleek and fast. the hardware function buttons annoy the crap out of me, though.

next step shoud be something the size of the DInc, better built, and faster. the samsung looks pretty nice.

One reason that I wanted to upgrade to a more powerful phone was to not be left-behind when future O/S upgrades and significant apps (i.e., flash) are released (and will only be supported by the higher-performance phones). The large 4.3 inch display was also a factor. :)

I'm sure a lot of that is driven by marketing and sales (i.e., to keep phone turnover occurring), but much of it is legit where the new software needs a more powerful platform to run smoothly on.

But I do agree that most apps and functions on a smartphone don't need to be done on a 2GHz 16GB device. :D

Cheers!

Wow. I am very disappointed Sean.

I know...I know...I got a little zinger from jreed too :p... I'm really just waiting for the official Froyo release...then, I'll root it... Its a pretty good phone, unrooted. ;)

My Eris is satisfying my rooting "hobby" for now...I've flashed more custom ROMs in the last two weeks than I did in the first three months that I was rooted.

Cheers!

edit: by the way, my wife says to not encourage me :D

Its becuase you are not a smart phone user. Seems like you bought a smart phone just to be "cool". I have owned the Eris for about 5 months and switched the the Incredible. The Eris is so slow and frustrating to use. Browsing the internet on my Incredible is 3-4 times faster than with my Eris. Google Nav on the Eris is so slow its almost useless. You can forget multitasking on the Eris since it gets crippled due to lack of RAM. It so frustrating to have the Eris in a situations where you need to quickly look something up or quickly get directions ect due to how slow the phone is. The Eris is an OK phone for people that use it mostly just as a phone but for people who use apps like the browser daily, well its just a waste of time.

same experience with Evo. same web browser speed on 3G (no sprint 4G like almost everywhere). Mine was actually a tad faster for whatever reason. EVO not pocket friendly at all (I'm a man but would have to get into man bags to carry one lol). with both running 2.1 and HTC sense the experience was exactly the same and that was BEFORE I rooted. this wasnt a 15 minute once over either. I played with it almost daily for hours at work (co worker has one). I wish I had the camera flash and the kickstand but honestly my eris and canon SD780is pocket camera combined are smaller and more pocket friendly than the EVO and it runs circles around any phone for pictures and shoots good quality HD video. I understand liking big screens but at some point it henders mobility and even makes them less attractive. If they put the EVO package in the size of the Eris I'd be sold (even though from my experience if they did that it would just be an Eris with flash and kickstand and better paper specs at least on andriod 2.1).

My GPS has always worked flawless. I watched the street signs exactly at the point I pass them. I mean dead on with no lag. If you mean time to load a destination I've never even thought about that until now so it must not be too bad (or I'm never in that much of a rush LOL). the experience is basically no different than any cheap stand alone GPS and since its a $99 PHONE ($19 and one free for me with upgrade credit) the fact that the GPS functions as well as it does certainly leaves little to complain about. Its like needing good quality photo's and complaining about a phone camera. Like I posted above I put my eris side by side with the EVO multiple times on 3G and the browser was faster for whatever reason. perhaps would be different on wifi. I agree I'd expect an upgraded phone to multi task better and open apps faster and SHOULD be better with the two things you mentioned but I didn't find that to be the case with the EVO and would have been severly p*ssed if I upgraded. I rooted to froyo, overclock to 748mhz, moved several apps to hard drive now speed and multi tasking is a non issue and none of it cost me a penny. Is it an incredible, NO but its nowhere near as incapable as you describe.

Most importantly when you bought the phone you knew it was entry level to the motorola droid. rooted my eris dust a stock 2.1 motorola droid in every benchmark btw and not far off from a stock nexus one on 2.1.

so I'm not a smartphone user because it takes 2 extra seconds for me to switch out of navi and load up google?

the dinc is amazing, I agree, but I think I'll save my upgrade for whatever replaces IT. that should be really "incredible"

Correct. You see, the Eris take three to four times as long to render pages and has no flash 10.1 support. Google has no content on its webpage so anythin will load it fast. Try loading androidforums on an eris. It so slow. The Incredbile easily saves me 10 seconds. Plus navigating webpages is so frustrating with the eris.

No real smartphone user will put up with the constant delays and lag that the Eris suffers from. I easily save 15min per day by not waiting on the lag from the slow Eris.
