Root Simple Root or Unrevoked?

There have been a few different posts dealing with this concept, but I still haven't found a solid answer..which probably means there isn't one. Anyway, I am about to root and have been reading everything I can find, and there seem to be some people that do not like the unrevoked because it does not "fully" root the phone; or does not nand unlock completely or something. I wont try to explain details because I do not know much, but bottom line is:

which do you recommend using as a first time rooter? Follow the tutorial until I have 2.1 and then use Simple Root or just follow the tutorial completely that uses Unrevoked?

Also, this is the correct place to find the most up to date Simple Root, correct?

I used Simple Root mainly because I heard bad stories about unrevoked. Simple Root is straightforward, mine was actually a 2 click process. I downloaded the program off the Simple Root website.

A lot of the info you've found is outdated. Be sure to pay attention to dates when you read forum posts. If it's older than a month, it's probably way outdated.

Unrevoked Forever is a full root. Before Unrevoked Forever was released, the predecessor, unrevoked3, was not a full root. But it was a very simple root process that didn't require that you factory-reset your phone.

The alternative was Simpleroot, a full-root method through the click of a few buttons. It was designed to root a stock 2.1 system, and it required you to factory reset your phone, which meant you needed to back up your apps and data.

I advocate doing it manually the first time (toast 1&2). It's a complex task, but if you're prepared, it doesn't have to be intimidating. You see and learn the process from a fundamental level, you learn to navigate and become comfortable with the screens, menus, and commands. You don't have to know linux, you just have to follow the steps slowly and carefully, and you can cut and paste the syntax.

I agree with Novox to read the sticky, as well as several other useful threads in this forum. I think of the one click methods as power tools, best left in the hands of people that have already grasped the basics, with the know how to determine when and how to improvise should something not go as planned. Glitches happen, and one step tools can leave you high and dry if something should go wrong.

I don't mean to imply that I'm right, therefore someone else is wrong. Lots of people here have enjoyed complete success with SimpleRoot and/or Unrevoked on their first try, and I see many of those same people giving excellent help, tips, and advice here all the time.

Still, to me, it makes more sense to learn it from the ground up, and learn what the shortcuts actually do and why they work, as well as how to deal with it if/when they don't work.

Actually, a good many of them come with 2.1 and BB updates them. Try asking them to skip the update. If they ask why, just tell them you want to check into 2.2 prior to updating and that you'll do it yourself. You can root it either way, but rooting 2.2 requires you revert to 2.1 first, so skipping the update saves you a few steps. Do NOT tell them that you plan to root it.
