Hello, New to the forum but have been lurching for a little while.

Has anyone else experience a crackling external speaker on their Evo? One day i was sitting watching tv and heard a funny noise. It was sort of distorted version of my normal notification. To my surprise it was my Evo and for whatever reason the external speaker seems to have taken on a new personality.

The rings are crackling, the sound quality is terrible, and songs are hard to listen to. I dont think i did much to bring this about. Usually ill just listen to a bit of music with pandora and thats about it.

I believe i read somewhere that someone was told this could be caused by a software issue. I have since deleted any apps that would have been installed after or close to the issue coming about. I hate to do a hard reset and lose all my apps and info, but i guess i may have to. On a side note are there any good backup apps out there?

Any help or info would be greatly appreciated.

If your going to back-up im going to say use Titanium Backup..Im guessing you already did a battery pull? if that doesnt work you may have to Hard Reset to make sure its not a Hardware issue:(

I get this problem from time to time. I was also the one that suggested it might be a software related problem, but it hasn't lasted very long for me. If you're able to reproduce the problem consistently (especially while listening to music) it may just be that you actually blew the speaker.

Another interesting thing I noticed this week is that the speaker issues may be caused by the headphone jack. I'd be interested to see if anyone can perform this test on their phones (mine is v002).

1) Call your Evo from another line. Everything should sound fine.
2) Plug in a pair of headphones.
3) Call your Evo from another line. The ringtone should now be distorted (mine always is).
4) While the phone is ringing, take out the headphone. After a few seconds, your ringtone should return to normal opperation (no more distortion).

I'm not sure why this happens, but it is repeatable for me. However, as I said, unless I have a cable in the headphone jack, it's rare that my speaker distorts while playing music.

I've posted this request before, but got no response. When I have my phone's headphone jack connected to my car & someone calls my phone, the ringtone (through the speakerphone) sounds distorted & cracks a lot. However, when I disconnect the headphone connector from the phone (while it's ringing) it goes back to normal. Can someone test that out & let me know if yours does the same?

I blew the speaker in my first EVO I think with an AirHorn app. I think I blew this external speaker messing with the Mixzing equalizer. Hard to tell. With all these apps I am just like a kid poking an anthill with a stick, just a matter of time until I get bit. I break my truck four wheeling also, same feeling of oops I should not have done that, that is going to cost me.

Mine blew a few weeks ago, speaker phone is absolutely useless now...as opposed to merely passable, why won't HTC make any other phone than the TPII with an awesome speakerphone?

Same here, mine is bad and continually getting worse. It even sounds terrible when the phone rings. I haven't returned it yet for fear of what I'll get as a replacement, especially since I have no other issues.

Just got my phone yesterday and my ear speaker was crackling right out of the gate with the first incoming call. It's the first time the speaker was used assuming that my new phone isn't a return and rehashed to me.

I assume I should exchange it out or maybe just wait a week. Maybe with luck it will self correct lol.

bummer anyways as I had to manually load all my contacts.

sprint has replaced one phone for the external speaker and actually replaced the speaker twice and now i have to take it back for the third time... something is really wrong but i can't go one month without the speaker blowing. its really starting to piss me off bad and i'm going to raise hell when i take it in and now the spring on the kickstand broke or something cause it don't close or whatever and just keeps flipped out. i love the phone but hate the speaker issues.
