8 MP/1.3 MP Evo camera vs. 5 MP/VGA Epic camera

I own the Evo now and my main concern with upgrading to the Epic is the lower resolution cameras on both sides of the device.

My secondary concern is the YouTube app. I watch tons of YouTube on my Evo and I've heard that the Epic does not support Youtube videos in HQ quality.

I'm also curious to know if the battery life is significantly better than the Evo. As awesome as the Evo is, battery life is one of the departments it is lacking in.

It does support the HQ, you just have to press menu, view in HQ.

As for the camera, stills from the 5MP are as good as the EVO, and the Epic's 720p video is better. EVO indoors barely breaks 11fps, Epic is much smoother.

How about the front-facing camera? And I've taken 720p videos with my Evo and they didn't look that stunning to be honest.

The biggest selling point for me with the Epic is the QWERTY physical keyboard. Texting is okay on the Evo due to it's large screen, but I still find myself making frequent mistakes. I've owned other QWERTY Sprint texting phones like the LG Rumor 2 and LG Rumor Touch and I texted just fine on them.

Wasn't impressed with the front camera on the EVO to be honest. My old iPhone 4 was much smoother and worked a lot better indoors.
Haven't tested the Epic's yet since my gf broke her EVO and we can't do fring anymore, but I will when I get home.

Also don't get me wrong, the EVO is a great phone, but the camera on it didn't impress me at all.

I really really like the keyboard, it has the 4 dedicated android buttons, it is very spaced out, to be honest it is the best keyboard I have used on a phone, hardware wise. I use the keyboard to play emulators suck as Snesnoid and I have dedicated buttons on it for the best playing experience. For example, super mario bros in landscape widescreen is amazing :)

There one thing the Evo has better than the Epic, though... Froyo.

Ok I just swapped my Evo to the Epic today. Boy am I impressed!!! The HD video camera actually looks like High Definition. As far as stills go its about the same. The keyboard is slick the screen is accurate and the biggest difference I've noticed is how much faster it is! Not to mention the amazing screen quality. All around waaaay better than my Evo, and its only day one :)

Why? The Epic is faster on 2.1 than the EVO is with 2.2. With my EVO, I still had pretty choppy browsing when panning\zooming. Games run exactly the same on 2.2 as they did on 2.1. Oh... but it helped non-graphics intensive benchmarks (who cares?)...

There's very little that froyo has to offer for the Epic. I'm more looking forward to the GPS fix...

I did a comparison between the cameras. The Epic wins in both stills and 720p video recording. The Evo wins in front-facing camera stills. I asked a friend which front-facing camera they liked better and they said the Evo. From what I saw, the VGA image looked similar to the 1.3 MP image on the Evo, but it was significantly smaller.

To me the second worst thing on the Evo video recorder (the first being low fps when not in perfect lighting conditions) is the horrible audio quality. I've heard the audio quality on the Epic is much better - can anyone who has done side-by-side comparisons comment?

I have done side by side comparisons.

Videos taken with the Epic are MUCH better, both video frame rate (especially in lower light) and audio. The flip side has been that the Evo takes better (sharper, more detail) still pictures.

I disagree regarding the stills. In my experience, the Epic is far superior in both video and stills. The megapixels have nothing to do with it. I had my Evo next to an Epic on display at my Sprint store. Pointed both phones at the same thing and snapped some pics. The Epic's photos were awesome. The Evo's were washed out and grainy. The Epics' pics were a bit darker, but I suspect this is because OLEDs have a dynamic contrast range lower in brightness than that of LCD (I'm talking about range, not ratio). But if you take both Evo and Epic photos off the phones and onto a calibrated monitor, you will see that the Epic's photos have much better contrast and exposure, and most importantly, less noise/grain.

It's no contest.

I love everything Else on the EVO EXCEPT the Camera, What a major disappointment. Compared to the Epic, the Evo camera seems like a major flaw. I had taken this one video outside with lots of light and the audio was out of sync with the video.. Horrible.

Some pictures and memories are really important, so I'll stick with the Epic until EVO fixes its horrible camera.

Did a videochat between the Epic and EVO yesterday. The Epic's front camera is better in low light than the EVO. I just wish I could record video from it for MMS.

Marginal different if at all, I never noticed. BUT what is very noticeable is the massive distortion on the epic ffc.

There is also significantly more shutter lag on the epic camera system in general, which negatively affects it in all situations.

I've just noticed that one cannot record video using the front-facing camera. On the Evo you could record VGA quality video using the front camera.

Also, how do I make the browser stop loading web pages in WAP. The browser will always use a WAP version of a web page whenever one is avaliable instead of full HTML. I didn't buy my carrier's top phone to be browsing WAP pages, after all.

Exactly.

Megapixels are now just marketing hype. What is important at this point is the size of the pixels, not the number of pixels. Pixel size is related to the size of the processor chip/sensor. After a point, more pixels on the same size sensor actually degrades picture quality, especially in low light.
